The funny thing is that Skyward Sword actually had real time healing AND an inventory system that prevented you from having an unlimited amount of potions. Edit: I'm not saying that Skyward Sword is a better game. This argument also only really makes sense in Hero Mode since Normal Mode has hearts. All I'm saying is that the Zelda team has tried the idea of limiting your healing ability before and it worked great (in Hero Mode) so I don't think it's unlikely that we'll see a return of this mechanic.

Most Zelda games had something like that, not just SS. BotW was the exception, I guess the reason is that being more open ended makes the designers more uncertain of when something may be too difficult, so they added ways to allow the player to make things easier for them.

To me, the Divine Beasts in BotW felt like 4 parts of the same dungeon. They were definitely fun, but each one felt short and ended with very similar looking bosses.

Very true... They all had the same gross boring brown texture. I think their length was decent for what they were, but there's nothing quite like being stuck in an underground dungeon for who knows how long 😊 Not to mention the Ganon Blights. Jeez, the only one of those that was engaging is the lightning one due to how fast it dashes at you.
@RubyGalaxyYT

I disagree that the DB's being one dungeon, all of them feature a different alter feature and are spectical pieces not on the inside but just to get to them, the game takes the time to get to them and in the story gives them weight to the problems that they cause making them more daunting to get inside them from a feeling stand point. While they are shorter than most dungeons the designers probably did that on purpose to not over do them and the shrine challenges more than make up for the lack of length and were more for the puzzle fans, and from a world design perspective I think it was to make sure that they didn't do a 'bigger on the inside' reality warping as that wasn't what they wanted and if they increased the size of the DB's it might have tanked or caused performance problems so they went with the size and made a dungeon around and inside it.

@@RubyGalaxyYT the problem with the whole "shrine challenges more than mak[ing] up for the lack of length and were more for the puzzle fans" is that the Shrines aren't actually that interesting, in my opinion. They suffer from repetitive visuals, repetitive music, and repetitive (sometimes tedious) motions/solutions. There's what feels like a billion tests of strength, a few inconvenient motion control apparatus puzzles, and most of the rest of them are forgettable puzzles that just use one or two of the runes; after awhile they all just sort of blend in together. That's my opinion of course, but this is why traditional dungeons are much more interesting - varied and unique environments, enemy variety, etc.
@StonetheDestroyer42
@StonetheDestroyer42 Жыл бұрын
I found the Divine Beasts incredibly satisfying to play in a way traditional dungeons weren't. You could see exactly how each step you took in solving the overarching puzzle affected the whole Beast in real time. It felt less like a black box in that respect, and really tickled the mechanical side of my brain. (That isn't to say I dislike traditional dungeons. I do like them, possibly even more, but they don't scratch this specific itch for me.l

Controversial opinion: instead of imposing a stricter inventory limit on food, they should actually steal a mechanic from Genshin Impact, a game clearly inspired by Breath of the Wild; a fullness meter. After eating food in a short amount of time, Link will become "full" and you can't heal anymore until the meter depletes. You can still stockpile all you want, but it would solve the "pausing in the middle of a fight and healing to full 20 times" issue.
@amandaslough125
@amandaslough125 Жыл бұрын
@@ExaltedUriel Zelda as a series always had a proper inventory cap requiring resourcefulness of item management. But for BotW's system, Genshin Impact does so many things better and actually balances it. They didn't just add a fullness meter. They also put a cooldown on other food buffs and stuff that are incredibly easy to abuse otherwise. And that's on top of an elemental system and balancing the numbers so you can actually use your environment strategically in battle throughout the late game.

I'm a casual gamer and BotW main appeal for me was the fact that I could freely explore and complete puzzles without fearing combat sequences. I personally love having an "immunity buffet" available just to give me the confidence to take on enemies - even if I don't dip into it during the encounters. Dying doesn't even set you back much, which encourages experimentation. I think Nintendo actually did the right thing by lowering the bar for us entry-level players. For more experienced players who want to make the game more challenging, they should just have a self-imposed rule not to eat meals during combat. That's just my two cents, but you're free to disagree and argue that there's a more balanced approach that can be adopted by TotK.

It could be really interesting if there was an Item you needed from the end of dungeons to complete the main story- but lets say you only needed three of them. But there are more dungeons than that to find, at least five, maybe up to seven. Players could choose which dungeons they want to tackle for the main story quest and how, and then have a extra non story reward for people who hit them all
@MegaFlame57

If you ever played Skyrim, your post reminded me a bit about it. Instead of dungeons, there are something like 7-8 "cities" (big villages, with architecture instead of only random houses) and each city and villages have something like 2-10 secundary quests, related to the geography, mythology, etc around them. There are villages being haunted by ghosts, threatened by bandits, with long and deep caverns occupied by monsters, ruins from an ancient civilization (and lore), etc. If they did the same to the open world of Zelda, that would be awesome. Actually having villages having their own problems, ethical issues, bandits, monsters, divine corruption, temples being occupied by monsters or corrupted by ganon would be awesome. And would muddy the waters on the usual story differences between a western game and a nintendo game (nintendo game stories are very simple and dumb, the so called "family-friendly"). We need more mature stories. Also rewards as you said.

Actually, for the first time ever, I think Tingle would be a good addition. Let me sell the idea. Some time ago, a rather odd boy stumbled upon one of the fountains of the Great Fairies. The Fairy sensed in him a desire to explore, and gifted him a magic balloon that he could use to survey the land. From that moment on, he became obsessed with finding them again, though he never was able to again. Fast forward to the time of TotK. The sky island appear however they do, and now Tingle can use his balloon to travel up to them, and even sell maps of the sky islands. (At least that's the story he's going to tell Link. Is it true?)

"the vast majority of players will complete the dungeons" This isn't necessarily true. On average only about 20% of players actually beat games. Only about 80-85% usually complete the tutorial. As hardcore gamers and dedicated fans this is a really weird thing to learn about games. I'm also a completionist, so not beating a game at least to the credits is a weird concept for me a lot. There is something intensely satisfying about seeing a puzzle you can't interact with yet, and then getting the missing piece later, nothing quite hits that same excitement of "I remember that thing from earlier that I can do now." But I don't necessarily want this new style of Zelda to change, what I want is a parallel _traditional_ Zelda to come along. That's a self-imposed restriction to change the difficulty for me. But my girlfriend struggles even with infinite healing items, so the game would be completely impossible for her without that option. She's having fun because she has a chance, and she doesn't even have to go into a menu to change a difficulty setting or something. The pet peeve with the meal slots in the item inventory is so ridiculous. If you want combat to be more challenging, maybe just not... use it? You're not forced to make meals. Hell, throughout all of my gameplay, I must have cooked 5 times, and one of them was part of a quest to open up a shrine. After a while I stoped collecting food items altogether, just because I didn't feel it was necessary. The whole point of Breath of the Wild is that you're able to play the way you want to. If you want to stack with 100 meals and never risk actually dying because you suck at combat, have at it. If you wish for the game to be more challenging, all you have to do is literally not sit down and cook unless you absolutely need to. But don't try to change the game to cater to your specific wants when it already lets you do that. There are different types of players and they all get to have their fun with the game.

Additionally the divine beasts all had a quiet inner sanctum central to their puzzle where you could just take a second and think about the monolith puzzle before you and just revel in the calmness when the rest of game up until that point was full of adventure, swords clashing, going point a to point b, the divine beasts really felt like you came into something much bigger than yourself, something sacred, ancient, yet living & breathing and it felt very grounding to feel small as you tried to figure out it’s gimmicks not that you were trying to defeat it but rather, to tame it, to understand it as a majestic beast, almost like befriending a real beast.

The fuse mechanic isn't going to result in less pages for people.. If anything they'll pick up more ingredients because they're going to be using them constantly. I think many improvements can be made to botw systems, but I find it bizarre how many people are willfully ignorant about how or why those mechanics work, or even if they exist at all (hence people claiming ingredients are used for like 2 things).

@@neonswift I think you are conflating 2 arguements into one. Too much stuff in your inventory to where you don't have enough to do with the stuff you have. That's not the same as saying you can't use them for many things. You can have many things to do with them, but not with your entire inventory as a whole. Sure you can use 5 campfires and 5 flint to make a camp fire, but you have 30 of each. You can craft an anchient sword or 2, but you still will have the issue of having too much. It's an economic problem. All the stuff you can use it for is too cheap. Even selling stuff gets you more rupees than you will ever need. I agree with you in that the economy as a whole needs a complete rebalancing. . . but nintendo has never been good with balancing currency and such in their games. Atleast not lately anyways. The bottom line is you earn more resources than the rate you do spending them. Meaning it's always a net positive graph, arrow goes up. . . which is bad. Making every item a consumable that you use frequency will definitely make spending rate go up thus helping to make the spending to earning ratio be atleast a little bit closer.

Making specific parts of the game unskippable completely destroys what made Botw so special, groundbreaking and so influential to all the games of the past 6 years. Botw did what no other open world game did and letting you have true freedom. Honestly, limiting how many meals you could hold would ruin the cooking system for me. Why would I ever craft something new with a niche effect like heat resist or sneak up if it's taking a slot away from something with 20 yellow hearts of overheal? LImited slots would just take an interesting system for experimentation and turn it into something you have to min-max.

Honestly, if Tears of the Kingdom listens to feedback requesting it to be less like BotW and more like other Zelda games, I’m out. There are a few very minor gripes I had with BotW but - it’s the ONLY Zelda game I completed (and replayed multiple times). The Shrines were the perfect size. The freeform exploration & discovery were amazing. I don’t want lengthy dungeons that feel like a chore to complete. I don’t want a “classic Zelda design” that regiments pacing into a defined path. Skyward Sword is an awful game. The story was decent but the actual game was terrible. Twilight Princess? It had its moments but it droned on and on and on. It also had a lot of issues with pacing. Windwaker was great but I found BotW to be a vastly more enjoyable gaming experience. There has been a LOT of vocal criticisms about BotW that I greatly disagree with. I DON’T want the game to force feed a story. The great thing about BotW was that the story was told by ME. Tarry Town? Discovering how to shield surf? Finding a weird labyrinth by following something I saw by chance in the distance? Encountering the Mountain God? Those were MY stories. They weren’t spoon-fed like a lot of today’s “marginally interactive CG films” being passed off as games. Those memories gave enough context and painted a great world for me to pave my own way. THAT’s what made BotW so amazing. If TotK reverts back to “Classic Zelda Designs”, it’ll be a huge step back.

At the very least, the whole 'defender of Hyrule' sub quest the game seems like it would give them far more valuable uses. Just using them to get around is niche at best and outright outclassed by some new additions, but being able to ride one into a battle you can apparently set up for at a preset location would be a great use for them.... I'd also love it if we COULD register other animals as well this time.

@Gentleman Bronco The Witcher III lets you summon your horse from anywhere and that game is far more immersive than BotW. Horse summoning is not immersion-breaking, it's just convenient. Having to travel to your horse makes zero sense in the context of a video game because the point of the horse is that it lets you travel faster. Not being able to summon your horse from anywhere just discourages using a horse altogether, *especially* in a game that lets you teleport basically anywhere at any time, *and* when horses are only good for travelling on perfectly flat ground. Horses suck in BotW. Summoning them from anywhere would *only* be helpful.

The healing thing I think it's harder to happen, even if past games didn't let you carry a near infinite buffet, healing was still done via a cutscene that stopped the whole game while you drink your red potion completely safe from harm, if I'm not mistaken Skyward Sword was the only game where the potions are consumed in real time (and that's assuming you're even using potions instead of the much better fairies, which ironically enough are harder to get by in BOTW and have a set limit of how many you can carry)

For the eating thing, they could actually have the same mechanics and inventory space but just make it so that instead of eating it in the menu you can hold it in your hands (the same as with ingredients in BOTW) and then you need to press a button in gameplay to eat it. And then Link can play a little eating animation and would be vulnerable at the same time. He could even walk or run while doing it like in Monster Hunter, but maybe slower than normal walking/running speed

Oh man, that food and potion limit is something I 100 percent disagree with you on!! Really is no reason to limit that at this point. If you want more of a challenge you can simply not use them. No need to try to mimic those souls games with their difficulty in anyway. Zelda is very much catered for everyone of all ages. And with any luck you’ll get another challenge mode with dlc like we did with breath of the wild. I’ll further say I’d rather have the option to make things easier or harder if I choose rather than having NO option of making things easier or harder

really disagree about the combat, the fact I am able to heal (quickly) gave me the confidence to actually fight many more enemies in the game than I would have otherwise. Had I felt there was too great a limit on the consumption of goods I don't think I would have used what I had so often. I would stockpile the best things and save it for Ganon or big bosses. I also would be cheap in how I would fight enemies. Trying to kill them from as far away as possible -therefore ruining the up close combat parts of the game.

I dunno, was the balance against having infinite food in BotW not just how annoying and clunky it was to make meals? Obviously I'm being facetious, but I always found myself being careful not to run out of the meals and potions I needed because the least fun thing about the game, for me, was standing near a cooking pot, individually selecting each ingredient to physically drop into the pot and having to go through the whole "throw stuff in, watch it bounce around long enough to skip and then show off the meal you've cooked" cutscene, and having to do that over and over just to not be screwed next time you meet a Lynel or something.
