Is it OK to wear this given that I am xyz years old?
This video is based on the questions I receive via Instagram, in the comments below my video or in e-mails. I have tried to cluster the issues in 5 groups: wearing everything boxy, using monochromatic outfits rather than creating contrast, wearing shapes/cuts that don't fit your current body, sporting too many accessories/details, wearing a bra which doesn't fit right. Finding the right fit is not easy. I hope you will find these tips useful!
Note: the age doesn't really matter, to me. It is more about dealing with a changing silhouette, at any age.

We also had the same “take one thing off” jewelry rule, with the twist that you turn away from the mirror, and when you turn back, you take off the first piece you see. It worked beautifully if you were concerned you had overdone it just a bit.

@@jennydlynd Wearing certain things can make you look older. If you want to look younger, then don't do those things. If you don't care, then wear as much as you want. No one is saying you can't ever wear tons of jewelry, just that, if you want to avoid adding age to your look, avoid too much. You can't just wear a bunch of it and look younger for it just because you like it. But you can wear a bunch of it and look older and not care because wearing a ton of baubles is worth it to you.

I’m 65 now, but when I was in high school I had a teacher that dressed very well. Always looked A+. Her recommendations for not overdoing accessories, was to count to 10 and then stop. Every button, bow, buckles on shoes, bracelets, earrings, brooches, necklaces, etc....counted as “1” and you couldn’t go past “10” or you would look like a “Christmas tree!” 😉

I never admit to my age but my kids are both in their 20's so I'm not young. That being said, I find that one of the biggest agers of women is hair color. My natural color hair is very dark brown, almost black and that was the color I've been using to hide the grays...until I saw a woman who had black hair who was clearly around my age. It aged her terribly. So i went a shade lighter and had highlights added. Much softer look for my older complexion.

That’s a really good tip about the monochromatic outfit! I didn’t think about how it might wash you out because there’s no contrast. These all white or all cream outfits are so popular in the spring and summer, but I don’t think it’s the most flattering, unless there’s a pop of color somewhere. I think that’s why people lean toward a red lip because subconsciously they’re looking for a contrast.

@@elizabethpink Absolutely! I find it really troubling that people use words like 'distasteful' when discussing what older woman 'can/cannot' wear. Women are subjected to some ridiculous notions of what is appropriate. Who are others to judge? Wearing the uniform of the older woman just serves to reinforce one's invisibility in society. Forget that!!!!!

If you like flowy clothing, wear flowy clothing, its your body and your money paying for clothes. If youre worried about making yourself look boxy or bigger, pair a nice flowy top with nice fitted pants. You can also do the opposite, flowy bottom with fitted top. I like maxi dresses in summer, so ill buy dresses that are light and flowy on the skirt portion but well fitted on top especially around the bust and upper waist. And if i wear a pancil skirt, i always buy high wasted pencil skirts and pair it with a flowy top tucked in loosely. The high waist hides the fact that ive had 3 kids and gives me a very attractive hourglass silhouette. Either way, wear what you feel good in.

chrissie as What do you think about older women (50+) with long hair? I feel a bit sad that where I live, 99% of older women feel the need to cut their hair short (I mean anything above your chin, some going for the pixie even) and I feel there really is no need. I understand if someone’s hair gets really thin with age and they don’t like to have it long anymore, but if there really is no need besides social pressure (many older women here judge each other if they dress really feminine/ have long hair). My mother is 57 and I think she looks good with long hair. I myself want to keep my hair long if I can manage. What do you think?

Mia Death get a cut that suits you ! Personally ive never really looked good in long hair but have people in My circles who are 70 -90 and have gorgeous long hair or even wear Very cool wigs in colours so wear what looks good on you and if you want to continue wearing long hair and its not physically possible get a wig and I would suggest a wig that doesnt mimic natural hair colour but is cut really beautifully - you can get a good hairdresser to do amazing things ! And if you have the hair and the face shape to pull it of Hallelulja go all in and decide whether you want to do natural hair which can look Fantastic ! Or a colour but based on what you look like Now because your face and your skincolour changes as you age and that effects your hair and wardrobe ! ( check out imogen lamport if you want more info on that and then check out trinny for tips how to break the rules and still look good make up and tweeks- both on youtube) Ps dont know what happened with that line over the text...

People should also be more aware of changes in their colouring whether it be hair dye or skin tone i went from being in the sun alot still pale very blonde to being indoors a lot darker gold ash blonde with even more pale white skin. And naturally when my hair darkened my clothing colours changed the brights that once suited and flattered my very blonde beachy hair now looked almost gaudy with my more toned down softer appearance. It allowed me to try out clothes that seemed too tame or pale in comparison to my initially beachy look. I think that would be a good reminder for people who also are embracing going grey or white knowing that now their hair is bright or lighter they can wear much more colour and be bolder than they may have been able to previously.

To solve the situation at one point I ordered and returned a few bras at one online store, chatted with their customer service, and found my real size. As far as I know, Justine has spoken out against fast fashion. Check out her other videos she is really all for sustainable fair fashion and speaks boldly about not supporting it primarily because it hurts and disadvantages others. Something most of us were unaware of until she kindly pointed that out. Keep watching she is great.

Thank you! As a mature woman I could not agree more about tailoring. I have learned to draft patterns and sew because I hate the current no shape fashion. Makes you look fatter. I use bust darts and waist darts. But look at the major pattern companies : Vogue, Simplicity, MaCall. Mostly boxy patterns. So perhaps it is hard to find tailored clothes? Also please read The Lost Art of Dress. In there the fashion advisors of the 1920-1950s say what you say. Mature women can wear more sophisticated cuts. Also, all outfits should bring attention to your face. Pop of color with clothing or necklines or accessories. Brighten your face and you wont look so old. Again, you should read The Lost Art of Dress.

I will look for that book. Thank you. I also sew and don't like McCall Vogue or Simplicity patterns - they are expensive really need an update. I'm relatively tall and thin and their patterns are both square and way short. It's been easier to take apart old pants or thrift pants that fit well and use them to make a pattern. Modern designers make much better patterns.

I had the misfortune of being a teenager and young adult through the mid 1980's to early 1990's (and a small and skinny one at that) and so I was in my early 20's the first time I put on something that actually fit. I looked so good I felt self conscious about going outside. But I got used to it and I was hooked. To expand my options, I started altering my clothes (myself, hand-sewing). Now I got a sewing machine. There is no turning back once you start down the road of tailoring your clothes. But it's not a bad thing. And I don't care what fashion does, my clothes shall fit properly.

I'm so tired of the skinny-jeans-and-boxy-blouse look of the 2010s. It doesn't agree with my shape at all, so here's hoping the 2018 resurgence of high-waist pants brings back more varieties of fitted blouses.

💖💖💖 Love this. I needed a reminder! Especially for the bras! Looks like ill be chucking them out. I rarely wear jewellery. If i do its maybe a ring. So i thankfully dont have a christmas tree vibe going on. I steer clear of monochromatic unless its for a very formal event like an interview or funeral something where you want to blend and be respectful and professional and cleancut. Also im very pale cool toned so in place of black if i can get away with it i wear navy blue instead since it not only suits my skin tone and flatters it it also makes my blue eyes pop. Im a jewel tones type of girl for colour or pastels depending on the season. I do have a bad habit of not wearing clothes that fit and flatter my body. Not because of self esteem but ive always been modest and dont like people staring at my body im an hourglass shape and i love my body but even if i cover up if i have a fitted chest or hip or waist area i often end up looking more sexualised or 'inappropriate' simply because i have more pronounced curves and am well proportioned. Even at home i prefer loungewear. Although in the past few years ive been trying out more fit and flare styles peplum etc to accentuate my shape. Im still not there but im getting more comfortable wearing clothing that doesnt completely hide me from unwanted attention. Also the jeans thing my god i can never find jeans that fit me! Ive found the european denim to be soft and stretchy enough for me to be mildy comfortable and to fit half decently without being super tight yet still flattering. I also find for my shape high waist ankle grazer jeans to be the best look. Even though i still hate wearing jeans i do actually wear that type and try to wear it when the weather suits and not feel horrendous as soon as i do.

1) Don't wear completely loose outfits. suggest contours of the body. Enhance your good features by wearing them fitted rather than hiding everything. 2) Monochromatic outfits. Pair with complimentary colour to break the harshness of black. 3) Dont wear ill fitting clothing. Old clothing or styles that once fitted your proportions but no longer do. Fit your clothes to your body not the other way around. If you have old clothing you love that doesnt fit get it tailored to your current shape. 4) Dont be a christmas tree! Less is more. Jewellery is elegant don't overdo it. Curate your pieces quality over quantity. 5) Ill fitting bra. Check straps. Dont let them dig in it effects your posture and makes you slouch. The band is too tight it will squish you and have overhanging body fat and underwire/cups your breats should fit comfotably supported in the cups not overflowing on top out of the bra. Check your fit regularly.

Except for the fitting bras, I disagree with everything. Some people look good in completely lose outfits, others don't. Some people look good in all-monochromatic, others don't etc. It depends on your (kibbe) bodytype, personality, overall look and so much else.

100% agreed. The problem is never your body! It's the fit, especially when your body changes. I wore low-rise flare legged jeans in highschool and into college because that was the style then, and I was an inverted triangle shape. In my mid 20s, my hips came out of nowhere and now I'm an hourglass with a long torso. I just started wearing high waisted skinny jeans and it has done a ton for my look and my confidence! The wrong fit can make you feel poorly about yourself.

@Kathleen Craig - I live in Australia, recently turned 50 & was an 80s kid (Gen X). I wear no jewellery 99% of the time & minimal jewellery for the remainder. The 80s made it OK to wear costume jewellery instead of everything having to be precious metals & precious stones - but we didn't necessarily accessorise to excess, we used colour, texture & our hair as accessories. People wore too much jewellery well before my generation. My mother (in her 70s) only ever wore high quality gold jewellery - but too much of it all at once & many women of her age & above do it. I put it down to her generation being Baby Boomers who grew up with post-war shortages, ration books & true poverty (the previous 2 generations also suffered wars, so it's prob been going on a v long time) which resulted in a need to display their current financial security around their necks. I often had to dress my mother for functions & do her make-up & I remember telling her in the late 80s that by wearing bundles of jewellery all at once (no matter how expensive), women just make themselves look cheap & gawdy & that dressing like Mr T was not a fashion goal that anyone should aim for. We 80s kids always get the blame for everybody else's fashion faux pas'.

Kathleen Craig Yes I’m in the USA and my grandmother loves lots of accessories, though her youth/funnest times were also in the 70s disco phase with lots of jewelry as well. I have some friends that were born in the late 80s that wear tons of jewelry all at once and to me it always made them walking targets. Even though most of it was cheap.

By the way, whenever I am wearing all black outfit, besides the using the accessory pop-of-color trick, I also try to make sure I am "tanned" (either naturally or by putting some bronzer on my face), and this makeup trick really breaks the all-black impression too

Merci, Justine! This video is packed with sensible advice. It's useful & helpful that you regard the issue more as dressing according to your changing silhouette rather than attaching age limits to particular styles or items of clothing. It makes me a little sad to see someone wearing a nice piece that they obviously have loved but that no longer fits properly because their body has changed. Thank you for discussing bra fit, one of the most important aspects of a woman's wardrobe. Seeing an outfit ruined by an ill-fitting bra is a major pet peeve for me, & there are so many examples out there! Your discussion of monochromatic ensembles reminds me of US Senator Elizabeth Warren, who wears a "uniform" of all black topped with a bright, color-saturated jacket for public appearances. She always looks great.

I think any extreme of colour more than a shade or two away from one's natural colouring looks harsh as we age. By this I mean lightening your hair too much away from your natural tones, or that popular extreme peroxide-blonde looks as terrible as the blue-black box dye on most people who use them. I also think unnatural colours such as Manic Panic type primary colours, the pillar box reds and hot pinks etc look terribly hard and unflattering on older people where as teens and early twenties can pull them off easily.

Hi Karen - I also found, then when I died my hair, I had to rethink my clothing choices. Black clothes do not go with every hair color. And going grey or silver (not white) can mean toning down the wardrobe color palette to more muted (pastel) colors. When the clothes and makeup don't go with the hair, all the details of our face sem to stand out.
