What the heck is Gen Jones

You’ve heard about Gen X and Gen Z and the baby boom, but what is Gen Jones?

i always felt the boomers line went on too long, don't know that i like being reclassified as a jones. they say gen x bridged the gap but that's not true, we are the ones who did that. we had some boomer traits and some gen x traits, we kept some of the old and brought in some of the new. i knew the 60's from a child's point of view. i was a teenager in the 70's but a young adult in the 80's.

I'm late Dec '62 and don't ident with Boomers. 70's ages for me was 7 to 16 so I think I'm more Gen X than Boomers.

I've never felt like Gen X, but I don't feel like a Boomer. That's why when I heard about Gen Jones I was so interested.

As an Xennial (1978), I know exactly what you're talking about. I grew up on the tail end of Gen-X, but the biggest thing I remember was the plastic toy boom and the new cartoon lineup in 1983. Plus, my first bicycle was a BMX-style bike, and anyone who was just a couple of years older had a banana bike.

It's like the first half of the Baby Boomers were raised by the GI Generation and the second half (Gen Jones) was raised by the Silent Generation. I'm an early Gen X with Silent Gen parents. I have an older Gen Jones sister and some of the generational difference between her and my Gen X siblings and myself are very real.

Actually I just watched a segment with Pontell from 200, and I believe he originated the term going back even into the 90's. "America's Voice: Generation Jones" for the segment from 2000.

Generation x is from 1965 to 1985

Im gen x, but i remember the gas crisis, water shortage, and spending money to keep up with the Jones. I remember Richard Nixon's speeches after he resigned, Jimmy Carter as president, the Black Panthers, tabs of acid, and roach clips. I was born in 72, and was on my own by 76. By 77, I took care of my baby sister, cooked, cleaned and did my own laundry at age 5. By the time i was 8 ('80), i had my first real job babysitting in the neighborhood. The only thing that would have sealed me as an adult would have been a license. Otherwise, i was doing things that adults did. I started paying for and buying things i needed or wanted, and i had to learn about bill paying and saving before i was 10. I thought of myself as being born in the mid 60's, because all my friends were my babysitters, who were 8-10 years older than me. I learned a lot from them.

Different Generations have cohorts within them. So even Gen Jones has a subset called Cuspers. About '61 to '65. Born after the pill was available, they were the younger siblings of Baby Boomers. So part of their experience was no younger siblings, expectations of a life like they saw the Boomers having, but the reality of Gen X life surrounded them. (Basically every let-down & rug-pull economically, socially and politically. ) Gen X experienced the idealism of the boomers ebb away.

@@artmv1149 It is not an exact science but the lines are already drawn and if they are wrong please do explain. A generation is a group of people born around the same time and who have gone through similar life experiences. 10 to 20 years apart taking into account Birth rates, social, political and economics. Greatest Generation: Born 1901-1924. Silent Generation: Born 1925-1945. Baby Boomers: Born 1946-1964. Generation X: Born 1965-1980. Millennials: Born 1981-1996. Generation Z: Born 1997-2012. Generation Alpha: Born 2013-2025.

That’s a dumb thing to say about Jim Jones. The vast majority of them were in their 30s and 40s, squarely what would now be called boomers.

You know I really wonder why so many spoke care about what generation group they belong to. It never mattered when I grew up was never mentioned by adults nor those I went to school with . By the way born in 73. The Gen thing to me even today plays no part in my life nor is mentioned except social media. Man I am glad I slide away from all the labeling going on today. It’s like a cancer growing just like the stupid pronouns and other things being put in labels for the past 20 yrs. I just go by live and let die because that is what’s going to happen to everyone no matter what.
