What The Heck is Super Mario Galaxy?

Super Mario Galaxy is a game I know and love, but I'm not sure I really understand what it is.

I don't think the amount of platforming in mario galaxy is that much different from most other 3d mario games such as mario 64 and mario sunshine. But I agree that mario galaxy feels the most like an adventure.

gonna be honest, as someone who recently 100% mario galaxy, i'm not entirely sure i'd call it anything _but_ a 3D platformer

Super Mario galaxy is a masterpiece of the Wii era of Nintendo. It’s the first cinematic experience of Mario before the movie.

Honestly I've never seen it from that point of view... Although we can agree that the platforming levels are the hardest in this game

It's still a great game. It's very immersive, visually interesting and has an amazing score.

Thank you ! I've trying to say that Galaxy is definitely NOT a 3d Mario game comparable to sunshine and 64 for years. Galaxy being an adventure game much more than it is a plateformer makes complete sense

Yeah nah I disagree Its still a platformer because you have a lot of moves involving jumping... and you jump on platforms Literally a platformer

True, but lots of games have jumping and platforms. You can do platforming in Call of Duty for example. I think that the platforming in Super Mario Galaxy is secondary, or complimentary to the gimmicky adventure gameplay that sits at the core. There's just so much that happens in each moment that isn't platforming. But maybe it's just a very gimmick heavy platformer.

@CafeCharlie tell me, how is the platforming secondary when the game can't have any mechanic without the platforming gameplay? How will the planet hopping and gravity gameplay exist without platforming? Maybe the world isn't ready for this video because it is stupid, actually.
