Broadly speaking, the Sudanese people have no political stakes in this scrap aside from trying to not get killed. Ideally the people want to transition to a democratic government, but the regular army wants to keep power and the RSF just wants to do whatever it pleases. Truly this is a, hide in your hole and pray you don’t die, type of situation.

Yeah, based on what I’ve read, both of the military leaders involved seem to want to become the strongman of the country and are trying to eliminate their main rival. They either want to be dictator, head of a military junta, or the puppetmaster of a weak civilian government.

@@GTOmegaZ3000 The fighting at the moment is confined to the capital and it’s vicinity. It is VERY intense, so even if you theoretically don’t have to go far to leave the war zone, there is also A LOT of concentrated fighting between you and escaping. Not to mention that bith sides are probably monitoring every inch of the city’s borders to prevent enemy combatants or messengers from escaping or flanking them or whatnot.

In February, I almost went to Sudan with my boss for work to go see the ancient Nubian pyramids in the north. I work at a museum in the US and we were already abroad for an international art biennial. One hour before we were supposed to go to the airport and get on our flight to Khartoum, our handlers in Khartoum, who were responsible for arranging our visas and transport and were recommended to us by a team of American archaeologists, attempted to extort us by demanding we arrive in Sudan with $2000 USD (equal to nearly 3x the average yearly salary in Sudan) in cash per person. My boss, who had traveled more widely in Africa than I had, immediately pulled the plug on the entire trip, recognizing the danger of the situation. It is absolutely surreal to see what is happening in Khartoum now - and, specifically, at the Khartoum airport - and know that if events had transpired just slightly differently, I would have been there mere weeks ago. It also makes me wonder if the extortion attempt by a company that had been previously extremely reputable in its dealings with tourists, foreign officials, and scholars, could be just one small manifestation of the country slipping into complete instability.

It seems like a regular tourist scam rather than organized crime. That said, in the Arab world there tends to be a large military presence in capital cities because the rulers are paranoid af of the idea of coups. What’s different here is the armed forces generally doesn’t split along factional lines.

I have family currently stuck in Khartoum, Sudan. The tension is really high and people are on edge. Some diplomats have already gotten shot (though not necessarily killed), and quite a few people are starting to worry about running out of resources. The embassies are stretched thin and what they can do for their people there is extremely limited. Going out with armoured convoys is not the play, because they are a major target for the armed forces who just want to take those for themselves. Going out to rescue people or come to the aid of anyone is becoming increasingly impossible. It is an insanely stressful situation.

RSF started as a paramilitary but was integrated into the military at some point, however they were still very independent. They’re kinda like the SS in that way. One of the incidents directly preceding the fighting was an attempt to fully integrate the RSF into the military and remove their independence, thus depriving Hemedti of the bulk of his power which he obviously didn’t want.
@puchy110
@puchy110 Жыл бұрын
If I remember correctly, the RSF was formed as a way of containing the revolt in Darfur and they ended up going off the rails. Using the same analogy, they remind me a lot of the SA who caused a ton of trouble and were only integrated into the German Army when their entire leadership was literally eviserated. At this point, Khartoum doesn’t have the capital to pull a Sudanese night of long knives.

Yeah no, as a Sudanese I can tell you most likely this is an us issue. This shit has been boiling for a while, since Hemdty obviously wanted to rule no matter what. Even though Al-Borhan represents his side, he wants to be the one. Its a power struggle. Egypt can keep face with our military government but they don't trust any religious fundamentalist rule. They are a dictatorship as well, but their military apposes the hyper religious side, to the point where anyone who opposes them is labeled "hyper religious terrorist" or as they call them "Ekhwan", which isn't surprising since the Ekhwan was in fact an actual religious and dangerous movement, but now to Egypt's government its literally anyone who apposes them. They see them as terrorist or most likely to become terrorists. We are the opposite, the so called hyper religious side IS the military itself. We call them the "Kaizan", the Sudanese version of Ekhwan. To them, if the Janjaweed rule, they are bordering an even more violent version of the Kaizan, which is true. Either way the reason this war is starting is likely an us problem, not Egypt's dam problem (pun fully intended)

It is actually pretty serious. Ethiopia has declined to negotiate with Egypt on terms regarding the time it will take to fill the resevoir(s). This is in part due to rebel groups in Ethiopia supposedly being mobilized by Egyptian funds/propaganda. It does get deep and dirty. What our seemingly nutty friend here is missing is Egypt and Sudan both have the same vested interest in the Nile. There will not be a need to "control Sudan" lol because they are just as reliant on Nile waters as Egypt and will surely join that fight without contention.

2:02 Nope. The RSF was a reserve force for the regular sudanese army, it's remained as such since the war ended, and the reason for the fighting is relatively unknown. There really aren't "less bad" people here as the army wants to maintain its iron fist and the RSF wants to take it's place 4:12 Sort of. Both the Russians, Chinese and Americans have had their hands in Sudan and none of them have been good for it. Though there's little actual arms transfers between the RSF and Wagner, and Russia just supports whoever is in power for its own benefit. It has no particular sympathy for either side in this one, it just cares about its bottom line really 7:30 So I study militaries a little and it's somewhat more complicated. The Sudanese army is quite heavily equipped and even has some modern Chinese and Russian stuff but is broadly Soviet with a huge amount of firepower. The problem is that they're dreadfully trained and don't have any serious combat experience against a prepared or well trained opponent, they're heavily politisiced and don't really operate their equipment well. Main types of tanks are Type-85s from the late 90s, the rest are a bunch of 70s and 80s Soviet upgrades. I'd be careful with the "Wagner" angle because it's a little like the "American bad" angle. In reality the Wagner groups role with the RSF is minimal in terms of the coup and the Russian government hasn't taken a position. It's like when people blame the Americans for the war in Donbas, it's always more complicated 12:00 That's not how any of that works. The Egyptian army is dreadful and they don't know how to use their sensors on their F-16's. The Egyptian M-1's are 90s tanks and are pretty mediocre in their export variant. Yes, the Egyptian army is much better than the Sudanese or RSF, but that's just money and equipment, and doesn't mean they'll succeed. They're nowhere near the "14th best" in reality.

Chevron owned the rights originally, explored and thought the field was not that big and sold it to the chinese. Then they discovered a lot more, so Chevron wanted to get it back. Sudanese govt said nope, so things proceeded as usual from there out. Oil (and some other "strategic" commodity) companies can always get the CIA involved and they can always get a storied played up to gain support from the full spectrum of US population. I say this as a full supporter of our support for Ukraine. Sometimes, as in WW2, the narrative is real enough, despite the cynical money grubbing and PR campaigns also going on. As a smaller theatre in the prevention of Sudan and Ethiopia from drying up the Nile? I would strongly disagree. If Egypt loses the Nile, it will be the biggest humanitarian crisis in history.

Israel is so safe from invasion these days if you think about it... Like, they maybe have nukes and America has nukes... A number of countries surrounding Israel have good relations with America that they wouldn't want to jeopardize over invading Israel... And for the few that are nearby and do not like Israel too much (i.e. Syria) and do not have good relations with the best of relations with the US being that they are perhaps more Russia-aligned (i.e. Syria), Israel is armed to the teeth in comparison... And with how the Ukraine War is going, probably Israel would only get even more armed if anyone were to invade them... At this point their position on the map seems pretty set in stone from external forces, it's just the internal stuff that needs figuring out...

@@nimrodery Until 2021, it was basically illegal for organizations within Sudan to establish relations with Israel. I would imagine that means there is still a reasonably sized anti-Israel sentiment in Sudan, particularly when it comes to these extremist militias. Now I think your hearts in the right place, this comment is still out of left field, but when I read it, I thought that it was an interesting take. This guy is right, another country that was somewhat opposed to Israel is weakened. And there was no accusation of conspiracy there either, I think it’s pretty widely accepted something like this is due to the strategic military partnership of Israel and the US.

@@RealmRabbit Well not much has developed there since 1979, Israel's a little slow giving back territory from the war, but at least we can call that a war. Today I guess it would be a "special military operation" or something like that.
