To be clear, Any Intel CPU that's still in its box has a better chance of surviving than those that have been running for some time. If you have a new CPU, just apply the latest updates and limit its power at the board level to make sure it doesn't kill itself.

Could be multiple reasons for the instability. Update your bios to the latest microcode 129, then go into your bioss and go for a fixed vcore at 1.325v or less and you should no longer have any problems. The problems with the high-end 13-14 gen been there for a long time.... Crazy consumption of wattages, overheating, crashes. And no good solutions. To make things worse, they knew about it! And kept on selling!. In a lot of cases with problems and damage they blamed the consumer, and no recall. And now Intel is in bad weather, in a few day's they dropped 30% on the market, so 15.000 employers will be fired.... I always preferred Intel above AMD, so there I was a month ago, wanting to build a new gaming pc. I had to make a decision. So i made the switch to AMD, studied it a bit and learned that the fasted gaming chip is not from Intel but from AMD, that took me over the line to go to AMD.... And what a wise decision it was. I went for the rijzen 7 7800x3d which is the chip I ment. Because of that 3d cache it has that title. The build went great, and that chip is amazing! ......I hope Intel wil get out of their problems because it's not only bad for Intel but it's bad for the whole industrie, development, everybody. But quit frankly the damage is done, it will set back Intel financially and as a developer.

I am on my second i9 13900K in seven months. First was incredibly unstable. Lots of crashes and BSoD after six months light usage. I was sure it was the motherboard (MSI Z690-A Pro), but I have no spare parts to troubleshoot so I sent the machine away for repair. The repair bloke said it was the CPU. I thought it was BS, but the machine was working with a new one in it so I just got on with it. Fast forward another six months and I started getting instability issues again. Several crashes every day for maybe six weeks while playing games. I then saw that my issues were maybe down to degradation of the CPU, so I have arranged a replacement via RMA and it will be here next week. I still have the faulty CPU in my PC, but in prep for the new one I updated my BIOS and I am now in my fourth day with ZERO crashes. It is my understanding that if your CPU was fine, but now isn't, it has degraded and needs replacing, whether a BIOS update makes it stable or not. FYI for those updating BIOS: When I updated my BIOS it reset my boot drive order and when the system rebooted it was stuck in a repair loop. If this happens to you, just make your Windows drive your primary drive again and it will boot as normal. Something most people maybe know, but it caught me off guard and had me panic for a bit. xd

Before I purchased my new computer two months ago, I had an 8th gen i7 and honestly till this day I never had a single blue screen and it ran beautifully and still does, zero signs of any degradation. I only upgraded because Adobe products required far more memory and power to run. Therefore I just wonder what happened since the time I got the 8th gen to now. I blame Intel and motherboard manufacturers, it’s inexcusable that out of the box the bios specs do not match what Intel has on its website. Either Intel knew about this or they looked the other way and didn’t care. Either way they are responsible and need to make the public whole again. However I do feel with the microcode patch, the RMA’s and the new processors launching, no one will remember this issue 6 months for now.

The 14700k in my home server has been fine so far. Time will tell, I built it at the beginning of july soley for hosting several games on discord. My primary gaming computer atm is an Alienware Area 51m R1 with 9700k and RTX 2080, because I'm a trucker. I'll be replacing my laptop here soon enough, I'm just waiting for next gen hardware to hit the market, then building an ITX/MATX system in the case I have waiting at home. I'm not too concerned, the server at home is never pushed beyond 10-30% utilization. Mainly just a RAM hog running 4 server profiles for the games we play. Plus now my warranty is extended and additional 2 years regardless. As for my soon to be system, I'm waiting OFC. Waiting to see how 15th Gen pans out since it will be on a whole new platform/generation from Raptor lake. New Socket, new architecture, smaller node, new node process GAA, and a lot of other changes/improvements. So far Zen 5 has been, unimpressive at the least, but its still too early to tell. X3D hasn't released yet, and it looks like Zen 5 definitely needs some software/BIOS updates to boost it a bit. As for Intel I don't expect to see reviews for that until early October to late October maybe into November. My laptop is still getting me along fine, and has been the last 5 years. Now even Nvidia is apparently facing delays with RTX 5000.. So all I can do if I want exclusively next gen bleeding edge hardware is wait a bit. At least then I should be setup good to not have to worry about any major upgrades till maybe 2029/2030. I'm not gonna be going cheap on this next build, max out the specs so I can just roll with it for 5 years or more.

I can’t believe how hot these CPUs have got. I did a 10 yearly update on my computer and completely renewed the lot. I’ve been doing it since the windows dos days so plenty of experience. I have ended up altering the BIOS CPU voltage and managed to get the temperature down from 90-100° but at the expense of speed I believe. I have now added a shed load of fans including an industrial extraction system through my study wall. Ridiculous situation and like you I’m out of money and favour with my wife as the computer is much noisier, and the speed compared to my old 10 year old CPU is no different and, more noticeable, the room I work in is in the thirties degrees centigrade temperature. I wish I had never spent the £2000 and kept my old one. Pointless exercise as my wife keeps pointing out. On the plus side I’ll be able to heat my house with it in winter

It got bad enough that I was going to reset Windows [I thought this might be the problem] but upgraded to the 125 ucode first....and that fixed my problem. [This happened before I was aware of the Intel CPU problems]. Otherwise my PC is rock-solid. I'm sitting on the 129 ucode/BIOS update until I get a Yubikey, because apparently BIOS updates on my system wipes out my ability to log into Windows without a big rigmarole to reset my password. What I don't know now is whether the BIOS updates will _stop_ further degradation of my CPU, or just slow it down. Also, there seems to be no way to tell how much damage has been done to my CPU. If the BIOS update _absolutely stops_ damage to the CPU, I won't worry, even if I have to buy a new one because of the damage already done. What I don't want is to have to change out a CPU every year or two on a system I thought would last me at least 5 years or longer.

I have a hypothesis for the Intel controversy and it points out to the motherboard manufacturers: - Most if not all motherboard manufacturers tried to undervolt the 13/14th gen CPUs with AC/DC LLs to get more juice out them. - Mobo manufacturers left the CPU TDP limits and iccMax as unlimited with low AC/DC LLs causing high temps up to 100°C and in some cases instability in high demanding tasks (shader compilation) if the mobo AC/DC LL undervolt is aggressive by default. As the mobo manufacturer uses the same AC/DC LL undervolt profile for all processors, this ignores the CPU silicon lottery so users with CPUs with no UV room those are more prone to instability. - When users saw the temps and power consumption, most limited the TDP to Intel specs 253 (which was available since launch) to reduce temps. Additionally other users, applied manual undervolting on top of the default low AC/DC LLs applied by the mobo manufacturers causing more instability. - As many users don't know what the hell are and how AC/DC LLs behaves in their motherboards a lot of misinformation with recommendations for configurations appeared causing more problems and since then many users thought and still think: "oh, my CPU is defective" or "my CPU is degraded" when it's actually an undervolting issue. - When the above issue exploded with posts and reached the point it is now, all users jumped to the same conclusion. - Some mobo manufacturers like MSI made a streaming session to teach users how their bios behaves and how to apply Intel recommended settings. Others like Asus stayed silent and just put out a Bios update and so on. Which caused more issues as with Intel recommended settings the voltages are higher and no longer undervolted by default as before. So a new problem there with possible degradation due to high voltages and high AC/DC LLs up to 1.101mOhm. How did I come up with this conclusion? I have 2 13th Gen CPUs (13900K and 13900KS) running perfectly fine, compiling shaders for UE5 games and editing videos for more than a year with no issues. A couple of friends have 14th gen CPUs with the same issues as everyone else and convinced that their CPUs were faulty/degraded. I checked both their PCs recently and it was actually an undervolting issue. They have been playing and using their PCs normally for about a month without issues. Conclusion, this issue is a big fuck up by motherboard manufacturers by applying OC/UV without user approval or informing users about them. The amount of misinformation generated because of that lead to many users to not configure their CPUs properly causing more issues and lead to the current situation. Mobo manufacturers left the CPU TDP limits and iccMax as unlimited with low AC/DC LLs causing high temps up to 100°C and in some cases instability in high demanding tasks (shader compilation) if the mobo AC/DC LLs are aggressive by default.

totally correct though Intel also have a hand in not working with mobo manufacturers to provide a baseline solid setting. Undervolting by 50-150mV (negative offset or manual) seems to be the consensus amongst various people who actually know what they are doing. excessive voltage and thermals are most likely the cause of the problems. There are also the power&current specs from intel. the bios updates arent quite there yet. (my 2 cents) 12th gen is fine. im still on 8th gen. XD you want less than 1.4V going to the cpu. preferably closer to 1.3V 1.5 is way too high, and this is still being applied by the latest 129 bios updates at default. (in some profiles) not good.

I think the biggest problem is the one escaping most tech KZbinr's. The resale value of those CPUs and the platform as a whole will be COMPLETELY tanked by these issues. Why would anyone buy a second hand 13th or 14th gen CPU only to have it for on them? Honestly, what I think (just my opinion as an old retired electrical engineer), I think others and you should stop watching GN. Yes I think there's an issue that could be avoided had Intel known about it. When anyone, anywhere, makes a new product, they can simulate premature aging - but just like your body, it can take abuse (hard physical labour, alcohol, weed, pharmaceuticals, poor food, certain herbs, smoking, etc.). Unlike your body that can heal itself - semiconductors cannot. But happy life can and does exist as time takes its toll. It's just my opinion based on my impression of GN. He may have, like a blind hog finding an acorn, stumbled upon something - but it's patently obvious - he's chuffed without sufficient cause. He says things that are very off-putting like "I have been doing this for 14 years." And true, he has built a following. I take nothing from legitimate success. But I have issues with arrogance. Apparently, some other content provider said or did something GN didn't like. So rather than being the man in the room, he was mocking doing a call out on the other person. So I don't see the constant barrage of clickbait posts help anyone but GN hours of views. I think bringing the potential issue to light is fair. Berating and disparaging, bullying to get a response, criticism while Intel investigates, then bash the response suggesting Intel is on a coverup isn't. They may be. Maybe not. It sounds like the pressure to always have paradigm shifts in performance combined with the short development time between generations caught up with Intel. That doesn't make Intel the Devil incarnate. My guess and opinion of what has actually happened is, people - innocent enough as many are - cooked their CPUs. I figure, the blindly trusted the birthing person boards with unlocked chips. The watt density (CPU watts per square mm/cm/in) seems unbelievably high -- even at rated levels. So if MB manufacturers (I hear ASUS has been called out) didn't prevent abuse - or if as some suggest, may be responsible, I would like believe the chip itself should protect itself. It strikes me as a perfect storm of users, builders, manufacturers, developers and Intel. This literally got by them all. Chips do fall over time. There's probably no way to know how much safety factor has been burned (or oxidised away). Funny that, it took two years for people to notice. My gut says, 1. Stop patronising GN and consuming hype, fear, and breaking rumours. Switch to less emotional sources. 2. Do the recommended fixes as soon as you can. 3. Don't push it so hard. 4. Contact Intel and keep a record of contact. 5. Just chill. It's not beyond the pale that if it isn't a manufacturing flaw, simply cooling the peak heat, taming it just a tad that you can arrest further damage. I don't care for GN myself, not because of content per se, but personality. At first blush, he strikes me as quite a jumped up person which, a little humility would go a long way. I'm not saying GN is bad nor wrong. But I would be very careful poking a bear. Just because you can, does not me you should. I am human myself. It's easy to slip up and go too far. I would personally feel uncomfortable having board rooms of barristers repeatedly looking over all my posts. I just wish, for GN's they could polish delivery a bit. Wish them the best of luck and continued success.

Oxidation was an issue on early 13th Gen on launch, and it was a small sample size which they dealt with quite promptly. Existing issues I feel are due to TVB vcore’s, best advice is set pcores to max 5.7Ghz and avoid TVB boosting, not that it benefits anyone anyway. It only exists as on paper it looks better than competition, but serves no purpose in reality. We also had AIB’s using really low AC_LL, now ironically Intel Baseline uses 1.1mohms which increases vcores quite a lot. So their excuse of elevated voltages seem contradictory to what they’re implementing. What a mess…

You haven't "fixed" your CPU with those BIOS tweaks. It will have physical damage and wont be able to run at its advertised speed any more. The new Intel microcode BIOS updates also reduce the performance, it's not by much, but it's there. And who knows if these will actually fix this issue in the long run. But for CPU's that already had issues, it's almost certain that they'll have physical damage. You need to RMA it with Intel, if they even allow it. It's taken them 2 years to admit fault and accept RMA's with this issue. Why support a company like this? Just do the sane thing and go AMD. Choosing Intel just because it's something you've always done makes no sense. At least with GPU's you could argue that drivers are an issue or they're missing certain features (like DLSS which is clearly better than FSR). But with CPU's you wont notice any difference. In this case AMD are not just vastly more stable, they're also easier to cool being as they don't consume ludicrous amounts of power, and you wont get better gaming performance than their X3D parts.

You can't justify getting a lesser GPU just to buy an intel CPU that performs worse. --------------- If the 14900k was $350 there may be a discussion to be had on which one to buy, even if the 14900k has issues. i just built my new rig in march (using your recommendation for the motherboard) So far I haven't had an issue. I don't want to go out and get a new cpu and motherboard, ram and whatever else I might need to switch to AMD. I guess what I'm asking is... worst case for now until I'm ready for a new build is that I would have to buy a new CPU only correct ? It's not like it's going to fry the entire computer..

Immediately update the BIOS to the latest one. But not all motherboard makers have released a BIOS with the new Intel microcode fix, so you might have to wait a few days if that's the case for you. But the longer you wait the more physical damage will be caused to the CPU. The motherboard and other components will be fine.

I have been lucky I think so far as my 13900KS has not had any problems although I will say I have not gone looking for it to cause a problem. I have run Cinebench R23 and things like that and played my normal games and I have not had any crashes or BSOD's. I am waiting for MSI to release the update for my MB (MSI Z790 MEG ACE) which so far as of this writing (8-9-24 8:30AM) they have not and have only released it for certain MB's which I don't really understand why they just release it for certain ones when my MB uses a 13900KS. The only thing I did for my Processor was tell the Bios I have an air cooler which lowered the voltage to like 253W or whatever as I am not super Bios savvy. I figured I'll just do the bios update when it finally comes out and then just use my computer normally for what I do until it dies then look into another processor and by then hopefully all this is fixed, however I'm also hoping I don't have to change my MB and redo my entire computer because that would really be a drag.

I was on the fence about buying an Intel CPU, mostly due to the fact that the company supports the Israeli government's genocidal campaign on Palestinians. But now I'm going with AMD. The information you've shared about Intel's product quality indicates to me that they're more in the business of maintaining their market share rather than building a product that consistently delivers for its customers. Cheers 🙂

You don't seem to understand that even IF you made your current system stable now with the voltage tweaks you did, it still means your CPU is DEGRADED and will not work in the optimal setting. Literally your degraded CPU will not reach the performance it was advertised at since you are underclocking it by undervolting it. You should probably RMA that DEGRADED chip to Intel and hopefully the new microcode fix on the "good" Intel CPUs will let it run as it was supposed to without having that VOLTAGE cranked up frying your CPU over time. I did the same fix on my 14700k which was constantly crashing playing the new season of POE and previously with Elden Ring. I can't believe that just limiting the voltage on the CPU by the many fixes on youtube streams actually worked...as my games don't crash anymore. But that means my CPU has DEGRADED and will no longer perform at the optimal settings it was advertised to operate at out of the box. WHICH makes me ANGRY since as a consumer if I had known about this issue I would have just bought the 7800x3d cpu from the start or even the 7900x cpu or waited until the next gen of Intel CPUs that don't have this problem.

From YOUR perspective the best thing to do is build AMD. Most people are "omg Intel had a problem I won't trust Intel again ever" at the moment, so for the next gen or two they are going to be anti-Intel. From my personal perspective I fucking despise AMD for fielding pre-alpha product in Ryzen 1, which was an absolute clusterfuck of a launch and I won't buy their shit again.
