Sam Harris speaks to Bill Maher about the state of the world. They discuss the aftermath of October 7th, the cowardice and confusion of many celebrities, gender apartheid, the failures of the Biden campaign, Bill’s relationship to his audience, the differences between the left and right, Megyn Kelly, loss of confidence in the media, expectations for the 2024 election, the security concerns of old-school Republicans, the prospect of a second Trump term, totalitarian regimes, functioning under medical uncertainty, Bill’s plan to stop doing stand-up (maybe), looking back on his career, his experience of fame, Jerry Seinfeld, and other topics.
Bill Maher has been on TV for 30 years. His new book What This Comedian Said Will Shock You reached number one on the NYT bestseller list. Watch his podcast Club Random on KZbin or listen everywhere.

Of course, in Iran they strongly pressure gay men to receive genital reassignment surgery, but American leftists somehow place Islam and Muslims on a pedestal.

Wishful thinking. It might be tempting to signal to the other side - "Look, even the Palestinians think Hamas is bad." Well. They don't. I never understood how a self referentially incoherent philosophy like postmodernism could gain so much traction in “elite” universities and amongst people who view themselves as serious intellectuals.
@mindlander
@mindlander 2 күн бұрын
Why?
@enndubful
@enndubful 2 күн бұрын
One reason is that the supposed experts on the philosophy can't even tell the difference between sincere attempts to apply it to a new topic and parody designed to make fun of postmodernism. A good metric for the validity of an academic field is how reliably experts in that field are able to distinguish between content written by another expert and the output of a hidden Markov model trained on the corpus of published work in that field.

Do your homework. Nobody brought a gun to J6; it was a protest, not a coup. The point was to ask Congress to postpone (not cancel) certifying the election, until irregularities in the vote (and there WERE irregularities) were thoroughly investigated. The FBI has already refused to tell Congress how many embedded agents/assets were in the crowd, suggesting a large number. Given the treatment of people arrested that day, it seems reasonable to ender whether the violence was provocateured, and the whole point was to demonize any questions of the vote irregularities.

Hitch would be able to explain the nuances between the repulsive identity politics against Trans and LGBTQ folks and the reality that having a biologically born man competing in the womens league will usually result in the trans athlete winning or overall competeing at the very top of the comp. His ability to paint a complex issue with very easy to understand logical analogies of sorts, simply made him outstanding. I am also sure that Hitch would have been able to put the above points across without sounding like a bigot and without insulting the Trans community. I would have loved to hear him debate the matter with Dawkins, who has certainly ruffled some feathers on the topic. Disagreeing with people is good and fine, so long as you have a common epistemology. I disagree with Bill on points but he's a secular humanist liberal and therefore accepts the scientific method and rational discourse. We therefore share a common epistemic reality and can talk about things with a common definition of facts. The problem with the "Postmodern" left and right that we have now is not that we disagree, but that we don't even speak the same language. We have completely different epistemic realities and axioms.

I'm an Israeli leftist. I don't consider myself a very empathic person, yet I was able to cry for a Palestinian child whose dad got killed, and for Palestinian parents who lost thier children. I would have thought the most empathic people I see on TV would identify with the suffering of both Palestinian and Israeli children, but instead many of them just choose a side. If you're unlucky enough to be an Israeli baby hostage in a context where Israelis are considered "the bad guys", no empathy left for you!

People who make an effort not to let their moral narrative block their ability to empathize with victims on both sides, especially children who are undoubtedly innocent. I can give two examples: Bono from U2 who has read names of both Israeli children hostages and Palestinian children who are war victims. And Regina Spector who started by identifying with the 7th of October victims and then also empathized with the Palestinian war victims in Gaza.
