Gua Gua (Darwin’s knockoff) got renamed to Ribbit in “The Knockoffs”, which I find kinda clever, since “guagua” iirc in Chinese is an onomatopoeia for the sound a frog makes, like “ribbit”. Kiki got renamed to Chi Chi though, and I’m not sure why.

Remember that Darwin isn't a kid, but a pet that grew legs. Did the analogue for Darwin also develop in this way? Could it be that the Anais analogue *did* exist but was *removed* from the family when Gua Gua came around because China values sons more than daughters, and that's what Gumball was hinting at by her blurred out photo on the family profile page? _This has pretty dark potential._

One thing I liked about Gumball was how it bridged the gap between one-off episodes and and over arching stories, like how Tina eased up a little to Gumball and Darwin in later episodes after the one where they finally got to know each other a bit more and made up for rivalries they had in the past, just to name one example. This is the first time I've ever heard of this rip off, and honestly, just looking at the visuals in this video, there's actually some decent talent behind the animation and character design. Usually the character design in these ripoffs is nightmare fuel, or at least mediocre at best. But here, the character design is actually on point. And while the animation isn't great, it's not bad. Though I wouldn't be surprised if the lack of better animation was simply due to deadlines and rushing, because there's actually some potential here. Whoever worked on Miracle Star does have potential. Just get some extra talent and great writers, and these guys actually could make something fun and original. But alas, it's a Chinese ripoff. The sad truth is there's potential here that will likely never be truly realized, which really sucks.

You know two of those episodes you mentioned seem like either direct ripoffs or heavily “inspired” by episodes of gumball. Like the food contest one feels really close to the the episode where gumball lets the ghost character use his body so she can try food again (mainly the stomach demon things at the end), and the dvd breaking one is literally a ripoff of the pilot episode where gumball and Darwin destroy a rental DVD, and try several things to get away with it one way being recreating the movie they destroyed.

Jeez, even the episodes of Miracle Star he described sounded like the inspiration could be directly linked back to specific Gumball episodes! The food eating one is a cross between the lazy-off with their dad and Carrie possessing Gumball to eat endlessly, the cello playing one sounds like they read the synopsis for the Swanny Whistle episode, the DVD one is DEFINITELY based on the dad episode of Gumball, they even try to film their own version to replace it!!

I just wanna say that as an ABC, I apologize. Also, I noticed how almost every time I watch a Chinese dub of a western animated film (I usually pull up the dub to watch with the rest of my family sometime after watching the og), the voice acting is… honestly ATROCIOUS. If you watch a live-action chinese show and compare to any animated Chinese show (or compare a live-action Chinese dub with an animated dub) there’s a stark difference in tone, even if you don’t speak Chinese mandarin. It’s really forced, disingenuous, and reeks of stereotypical “American English dub for anime.” Maybe it’s my hypersensitivity to noise and tone, but I seriously can’t stand it.
@Rodrigo_Vega2 жыл бұрын
Dubbing and translation are a part of the media industry a country has to develop just like any other. I found that countries that rely largely on their own national productions, (like the US and China) have _terrible_ translations, because simply put, they usually don't need them. People hear most of their shows and films in the original language. Here on Latin America, we've always relied on dubbing for all import of high-profile audio-visual productions so voice actors, even for "cheap" shows are in high demand and competition. Thus we always loved our own versions. They often come up with fitting, clever puns of their own and carry talent up to the task of the original.

@@Rodrigo_Vega You're right on how Canada defines local productions, but for the US, you should've said "national/domestic productions" because saying "local productions" in US terms would mean just one region or city. There are local stations throughout the US & they can have different content, even if it's the same sort of network. Fox for example was originally a LOT of affiliate stations, so each local affiliate could make their own content for their local station. Sure, they aired many of the same shows such as The Simpsons, but it wouldn't just be that. It was especially the case for when it came to Fox Kids, which every affiliate essentially had their own, completely customized Fox Kids Clubs. Even more, there was a thing before KZbin called public access channels. These were channels where just about any person that had access to a camera & some video editing software or heck, just a camera could get their stuff out there on TV through that local station that was a public access channel. There were many of these throughout the 80s & 90s, though a lot of that content hasn't been preserved that well. For some states, such as Oklahoma, Wyoming, Maine, & a few other low-tier states, that public access stuff was seemingly about 80% of TV shows that were made in those states & even then, they would usually only air in one specific part of a state, further disconnecting one show from another. Sorry for how long this comment was, I thought I'd explain what the might-be-official-might-not-be United States definition for "local" is.
