In England in the 18th and 19th century there were many cases of people surviving their execution by hanging. In fact it was so common new laws had to be made to say what happened to those that did survive. Many were not executed again, and returned to normal life! Often, as hanging was to strangle people, the crowd would leave before the person had died, and his friends or family could come to take him down!
