What the sale of Manhattan doesn't tell us about Native Americans | T.M. Rives | TEDxGowanus

T.M. Rives believes our understanding of the Native Americans that inhabited the New York area is encapsulated in a single story- the sale of Manhattan for $24. But encoded in this story and the symbols that represent it are fundamental misconceptions about the native population. Thorough analysis and often very funny deconstruction of this myth and its imagery, Rives gives us a much deeper and more valuable look at the complex culture Europeans discovered when they settled New York City.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Manaháhtaan. The Place Where We Get Bows. This is the traditional name given by the native Lenape First Nation who made this their homeland. It's their land since the beginning.

as Native American allies,, all of you should be knowledgeable of the people who live on YOUR land. It's not there's any more, and you have this right.. The white man has uprooted said societies, and now said cultures live on an American Reservation system, or the American system itself, with no representation, whatsoever. This is what we have to fight for... these stories that the peoples know are the most precious of all. How he was talking about ghosts' feet on the milk way, THAT LEADS OUR PEOPLE. WE HAVE THESE STORIES IN PLACE FOR PRACTICAL AND POLITCAL REASONS, NOT AS FUNNY STORIES TO TELL OVER A CAMPFIRE.

completely true. But one thing isn't: the "Dutch" accent at 3:30.... The Musee (speaking) Lenape were laughing, but Johannes Megapolensis (the dominee/pastor) didn't have a GERMAN accent...

I just saw photos of a Maine tribe of the Algonquin nation with the traditional feather headdresses that you call war bonnets and they were further from the plains than Manhattan. Perhaps you are mistaken in your assessment of the statue's correct representation.

Perhaps, had the presenter gone further back in history the truth could be learned. Instead, he plays on the politics of something that occurred before the Pilgrims. Henry Hudson ran aground in the mud of the Hudson River not far from where the Tappan Zee Bridge crosses from Westchester to Rockland County. That’s where it all began.

Roanoake 1585, Verrazzano 1524, Taino come to Wappingers 1300AD, "opossum people" come 1100AD, ... mitochondrial DNA shows Korean, Japanese, Polynesian and central Asian backgrounds. There isn't one migration or invasion but many. Hudson got stuck near the RVW bridge, not the Tap.

In the sculpture, the native had something over his forehead and it still looks like he has a healthy, intelligent sized skull and head if there even is such a thing. High brow/low brow lol You're making very contemporary p.c. leaps and maligning a sculptor and his works. Johnny Depp looking guy who looks like he's trying very hard to earn points with college girls.. that cool professor type. uggg
