The fact that Daurgothoth will sometimes leave his lair *just* to go enjoy the company and songs of a beautiful woman is absolutely hilarious, but also gives him an insane amount of depth. This has happened so many times, that lone female bards are warned that the creeping doom might just be sitting down at their campfire. Though it doesn't say he harms them, or even really does anything but listen and converse. Which means, in all, he's still something that can be reasoned with. Which is insanely fascinating to think about.

I know I’ve commented similar things before but man I love imagining the draconic politics of all these powerful dragons in the world. For example Daurgothoth is obviously this ominous looming threat that everyone leaves alone and I would imagine even amongst legendary dragons he’s somewhat of a legend, but he himself likely has his spies in the cult of the dragon monitoring the other dragon’s movements to make sure none of them pose a threat. On the list of those he monitors (at least out of the chromatics) I might suspect the list goes something like this. 1. Klauth (baby killers ain’t gonna kill his babies when he succeeds in having them, also enticing magic that he may want for himself) 2. Tchazarr (powerful enough to potentially rival himself if he lets his guard down plus could interfere with Daurgothoth’s connections to the cult of the dragon not to mention being an actual demigod dragon and having some powerful artifacts) 3. Imvaerno (the only other dragon of known whereabouts who can potentially rival him if he lets his guard down, his innate talent is quite troubling) 4. Mauzzkyl Jaezred (his secrecy and stealth as well as his power is threatening however given his ties to an assassin organization perhaps keeping him on payroll or at least enough treasure to bribe him to walk away is the best defense.) 5. Imyrith (her vast wealth of arcane knowledge and artifacts not only poses a threat but also intrigues him greatly, her work toward self preservation and creation almost seems to mirror his own and given as she already has two children he knows she’s the family type. Perhaps a courtship may be beneficial although must be approached tentatively.) 6. Claugiliamatar (her cunning is infamous and enough to put her on his radar. Also female.) 7. Arveturice (mostly interferes with humanoid populations and doesn’t seem interested in draconic conflict and is more preoccupied with her mourning and maintaining her territory but she’s still monitored for good measure. perhaps her loneliness could be exploited for mating.) 8. Ashardalon (has not been seen for centuries, perhaps dead or perhaps plotting something big, whatever the case he must be ready for it.)

He doesn't seem to have any evil intentions. His goal seems to be just learning everything and creating more magic. He doesn't go out and attack cities, he has no plans to conquer the world or create undead armies to wipe out humanity. He just loves all things magic and wants to perfect the ones already established, while creatining his own. He enjoyed going out and listening to people (specifically women) play music, but while he is lonely (and a powerful dragon, so he could pretty much do whatever he wants and no one could stop him) he NEVER harms them. Just a lone wizard who's been trying to find this ancient dracolich, following his movements and interests, all to request to study under him. He initially isn't willing, but he could use another skeleton for his phylactory room, and offers his tutelage if the player can bring him another dragon skeleton. Cue an adventure looking for the burial sites of dragons, searching for a skeleton for this dracolich so you can learn at least a portion of his secrets. Why would you go to such lengths? Do you seek power to annihilate your enemies, or to protect the ones you love? Are you searching for the ability to gain wealth and influence in the world? Or are you just an avid learner, fascinated by all the nuances of spellcraft and determined to study whatever you can?

He is a dungeon master's best friend to use without outright pulling the card of "ohh he's totally unkillable because i said so now do the dang quest please" while still staying in character for the game's world.

I feel like Daurugototh would make more sense in an adventure as something like a force of nature. This ancient, immensurably powerful and knowledgeable evil entity that's not exactly out there doing evil, just studying magic and growing his power for his own bizzarre goals, but if left alone he's not gonna be a bother for anyone in the next millenia. The players somehow become aware of this entity, and have to seek it in order to acquire some long forgotten piece of knowledge or magic, and in doing so have to thread carefully, as this godlike being is more than capable, and also more than willing to end their lives in a second if what they offer is not worth its time. Or even better, centuries ago a group of legendary heroes managed to slay the dragon, but failed to find and destroy its phylactery, maybe it remained hidden due to special defenses put in place by the dragon itself, and was just collected as treasure. It survived, but is now trapped inthe gem indefinately, and eventually the gem gets to the players, as some form of cursed item, or just a magic item, where the dragon lends them a bit of its power while tryibg to get them to give him a draconic body, so he can come back to its form and resume his magical studies. That sounds like a plot

Great video, it helped me find something that I was looking for for the past two years. I sincerely hope that there would be a video about Arauthator too. If I remember correctly, he appears in few novels, one 5e adventure and some old edition books.

The 2nd Edition "Cult of the Dragon" book had pretty good content, including some very memorable dracoliches (Daurgothoth is one, but Aurgloroasa the Sibilant Shade is also pretty cool). What makes Daurgothoth so special is his ambition. Dragons often seem to have no higher goal than the acquisition of food and treasure. The Creeping Doom's constant attempts to improve his own nature makes him original and impressive.

Loved the video as usual. I remember that older video when you touched briefly on the strongest dragons so it's great to go so in-depth. I know you have a crazy schedule for videos/ideas you're working on but have you ever though about discussing the Lady of Pain down the line?
@SageSaga252 жыл бұрын
I've used the Creeping doom in a one shot campaign and as a D&D story in one of my webcomics, where a group of players absolutely destroy him with extreme cheese tactics in addition to his weakened state after the spell plague got rid of Mordenkainen's disjunction and ruined his signature spell, which I'm shocked you didn't mention in this at all since you clearly weren't focused on the current Daurgothoth, and you did mention it previously. Gooood ol' Bonemelt. So, in his current state in 5e, he's at his current weakest point since so much of magic changed again, forcing him to have to redo a lot of work and even relearn spells that have changed. Studying magic must be a real pain when people keep messing with or killing the person in charge of the weave.
@rowancoady35202 жыл бұрын
I’m pretty sure he survived the spell plague with ease and was relatively unaffected by it
@regeneration6921 Жыл бұрын
Pretty sure the only real thing which was messed up by the spell plague for him was for starters Mage's Disjunction and his ability to change spells to the different elements at will considering that their mechanics have completely altered.

It's quite ironic that he Daurgothoth has all that god-killing potential, but instead just researches more magic in order to keep himself safe, and correct an Undead's inability to reproduce. As if he built himself an incredibly powerful character, but then realized that he would have to give it all up in order to get that one specific ability he wants. Stubbornly trying to find a work-around.

Is it weird that I kinda just wanna sit down to share some donuts and coffee with this dragon/lich/demigod to chat about magic and stuff? I mean, I definitely shouldn't, he would no-doubt find me incredibly dull and being anywhere close to this being, even with no ill intent whatsoever, would most likely be extremely dangerous.... ...but still.... =)

Currently running a very heavily modified rise campaign with a fair degree of power scaling for my players. They've had the name drop "creeping doom" dropped on them last session. Two are blissfully unaware, while the third said "I can't remember why, but I've hard of this name before, this going to be bad". This video is great for helping to plan out things, trying to scavenge hunt info from third edition and forums has been a nightmare.

@carlosgarabatosferro8833 ай бұрын
You chose him as your patron without even knowing who or what he was?
@matthewwhitt52493 ай бұрын
@@carlosgarabatosferro883 One of my friends used Dargothoth in one of his campaigns, going under a different name, but was a very powerful artificer that seemed way more powerful than he advertised, and wielded a staff that had only been described as The Black Staff. Later after some chenanagins, the party learned that it was Daurgogoth, but still didn't fully understand how powerful he was, but we knew he had enough power that gods and Demi-gods had called upon him for help, as being just about the ONLY help they were getting on the material plane who wasn't affected by a fully illusory alien creature... FAST FORWARD. Same DM wanted to run a new campaign on some timeline of his setting and I wanted to run a powerful Level 17 Warlock that was on it's way to becoming a lich, but I was given a very powerful weapon, that embodied my master, The Black Staff. IT was reveled that it was Duargothoth, but this video really showed me how powerful he actually is, and how much more powerful he was in my dms setting. I have made my own Drakolich since then, a wingless, intelligent Gargantuan White Dragon that controls a sweeping amount of undead and rules over a dwarf demi-god. Name is Zaegrax.

So happy you did this one. He is the big bad in my current game. In my game, he is attempting to summon Tiamat using the dragon masks. He plans to usurp her during the summoning, taking over the avatar and place the back dragon head in the centre. I have his layer on Selûne as he has no need for atmosphere or food.

i get he wants to be left alone to practice magic, and pride and all that wont fault him. but say a wizard managed to make their way into the main lair, past all the traps, undead, super golems and such and just asked for daurgothoth to be his teacher how would he react to being asked to teach magic not even the lichdom stuff just to be taught the mastery of magic from someone as powerful and invested in the craft of magic?
