@@tobor88 I meant, Demogorgon doesn’t get as much “exposure” as Orcus because of what they do, hence skewed popularity. The Undead are a staple of fantasy in general, so Orcus gets to ride on that. Information about Demogorgon is buried here and there, and none of it really comes to prominence as much as the Undead. Orcus also generally gets major mentions in 5e core rule books. Even in campaigns, it’s probably easier to use Orcus because he does have stable plot-driving cults and popular enemies across almost all CRs, and even a plot-device Artifact right in the DMG. This is easily one of the better demon princes to use in campaigns. There’s so much confusion around Demogorgon, as well as all of this absent context, as the video said at the start.

@HunterkageJoestar Slavery via force absolutely fits the chaotic vibe of the abyss, it's a realm where the strongest rule and everything weaker serves out of fear of death.
@whiskeyhound3 жыл бұрын
@HunterkageJoestar It's not slavery in an organised sense where there's overseers to keep demons in line, it's slavery in that every demon weaker than demogorgon knows that if they can't avoid him, do what he tells you to if you don't want to die, which is absolutely a chaotic way to behave.
@whiskeyhound3 жыл бұрын
@HunterkageJoestar The freedom aspect is as ramped up as it could be, it's ultimate freedom without any moral or societal limits on what's considered acceptable. You'd need to read material from older editions where the sheer brutality of the abyss isn't glossed over anywhere near as much as 5e's depiction, such as the fiendish codex 2: hordes of the abyss where it's describing as basically a endless series of nightmarish locations filled with screaming and roaring as demons torture and kill each other to stave off their endless bloodlust and frustration at being too weak to stand up to the more powerful ones like Balors.
@salhanus51303 жыл бұрын
@HunterkageJoestar My understanding is that they don't follow orders.. they just can't do anything he doesn't approve of. He can tell them to do things, but they don't have to.. but.. they also can't do something he doesn't want them to.. and if they try to fight him, they'll die. So it really is control through chaos... and it's what makes him extra powerful in a world of chaos. It's extra difficult to challenge him because of his raw power.. though the raw power in and of itself is a form of control.. but that's just the nature of concentration of power.. power is the ability to drive change in a direction of your choosing.

From deep in the depths of your mind, comes the sound of several raspy voices speaking as one: "Fear not mortal, soon you will be one with us...do not run, for you will only die tired..." as the voice fades out of your thoughts you feel the ground beneath your rumble violently as the massive creature moves from the shore to the center of you hamlet. The monster moved in such a terrifyingly fast manner that his limbs seemed to simply blend in and out of reality. In a heartbeat the gigantic beast stands above you. Its massive, terrible eyes stare down at you, and your body grows weak. You cannot stop yourself from falling to the ground. Your hand goes to your chest and that is when you glance at your own flesh...it has begun to blister and boil away, with tiny specs and pieces floating up toward the hideous creatures maw. The beast simply stares at you, its mouth slightly agape, but not moving. Suddenly your mind is shattered by a hellish shriek and the beast demands: "Bow to me, or be one with me...."

Yeah... You don't simply walk into the abyss, first of all, some demon lords can fight gods, like Orkus who killed Primus one time, the other, the power of a god could be reduced if he is not in his plane while demon lords and demogorgon are in their prime while they are in the abyss

I'd say Kelemvor would beat Demogorgon in a 1v1 fight, even if it took place in the Abyss..but he'd have to fight through around 2 million lesser demons, and several demon lords almost as strong as Demogorgon to reach him. An avatar probably couldn't even make it through the whole Gauntlet to reach the Prince, meaning he'd need to use his true, Godly form to push through the army, which..even if you use the rule that only an equal or higher ranked God can kill another God, getting their real, true body destroyed is significantly more inconvenient then an avatar. If nothing else it would probably render them vulnerable to Imprisonment & Demogorgon might even be in a position to steal their divine power, if a deity was defeated,& reduced to 0 hit points in his realm.

Start with reports of people disappearing, and monsters appearing near a small Town. The characters head there, and have fun fighting the various monsters. The monsters are often basic chimeras, or weird mixtures of horse and rider (not just centaurs). Have the town mayor let the PCs use a room at his house for them to rest/recuperate between monster killing, and at the same time the PCs get to meet the mayor's family. While in town slowly ramp up the monster production so it turns from an investigation into a fight (i.e. 1 monster every couple weeks, then a week and a half, then a week, then every 5 days, aso). Give the impression that the situation is getting worse, and if the monsters are not dealt with that the town will starve because nobody is safe enough to go outside and harvest food. Have a weak goblin tribe show up and steal apples from the orchard to help illustrate the problem. One of the mayor's family members is a 5-year old girl who wants to help others, but is sometimes found near the locations where monsters show up. As a result, the townspeople are saying that she is cursed and needs to be put to death. Cue the torch & pitchfork mob, which the players should try to talk down. Scans of her reveal that she is Good, and talking to her reveals that she is compassionate (good family raised her nicely) The catch: she is actually responsible, she was supposed to be twins to lead a Demogorgon cult, but fetus-in-fetu occurred and she absorbed her twin, also absorbing and combining the power. So she has powers to merge 2+ creatures into a single critter, but then she is scared of the result and runs away. The monster has gone insane from the (very painful) process, and lashes out in anger. Her actions to merge people would be described as her seeing that a farmer was angry at his horse, remembering that the PC on his horse got along nicely, so merged the farmer and his horse so they would get along. So the monsters are merely the symptom, the kind and innocent 5-year old kid is the real villain, but she is doing it out of (misguided) compassion. Give the players an idea that just a fragment of Demogorgon's power in this little girl was enough to cause the massive monster problem.

Nice, I'm currently running (a heavily homebrewed version of) Out of the Abyss, so all the knowledge about Demogorgon (and maybe also Graz'zt and the other demon lords) is heavily appreciated

I don’t think I can express enough how much this channel has helped me with my campaign. I’ve been planning a massive scale campaign about the return of Cronus and the videos on the planes have been massively helpful in my planning. Thank you!

PLEASE do more Abyss stuff, it's so underrepresented. There seems to be almost no findable information whatsoever about the abyss; about it's geography, topology, flora and fauna, its denizens, other demon lords, etc
@johngleeman83473 жыл бұрын
Well it's infinite, so you can have any number of different topographies and climates and denizens. But I suppose you mean information on the described and/or famous layers. XD

I never realized how much there was to Demogorgon, only ever having the 3.0 Book of Vile Darkness, and wow. Definitely need to plan some abyssal games.

This was fascinating. When you finish talking about demogorogon, you should talk more about the plane of water

This video was a real treat. I was first introduced to the demogorgon through the drizzt series. I've been fascinated by him since.

OMG, THAT WAS AMAZING. That is literally my new favorite video of yours ever. Where do you get all this information?? I consider myself to be very knowledgeable about DnD but you never cease to surprise me with things I've never heard before. You are without a doubt the most well read and scholarly Lore master on KZbin, no joke.

Yes. Yessss. YESSSSSSSSS MORE DEMOGORGON! Last July I finished the Out of the Abyss campaign and my players loved it. I can’t wait to find more out to pull him back in for a cameo in a later campaign

You can fight Demogorgon in Baldur's Gate 2 as the absolute OPTIONAL end-game boss. So far i found only 1 way to kill him with my warrior/rogue dualclass human. Set max ammount of spike traps around the room before triggering the battle. They will hit him before he gets all his protective magic right after fight starts. Cheesy i know, but i devised that by myself as a kid and the character was legit, so there is that

Clicked so fast. I've been reading about the demogorgan for a week!
@tomkerruish29823 жыл бұрын
Well done! I'd just like to add that the lore about death knights and retrievers being created by Demogorgon was in the first edition Fiend Folio. So, was Demogorgon originally one creature nearly split in twain or two creatures imperfectly fused into one? Personally, I favor the former, although I believe a case can be made either way. I'm basing my position on the lore that says Demogorgon was originally the first evil soul that fell into the Abyss; also, it's tidier, and I'm biased in that direction.

19:39 I can imagine that the ixitxachitl are so favored by Demogorgon because, thanks to some quirk of their biology or psychology, communities of ixitxachitl aren't capable of infighting. This means their cults to Demogorgon stay focused and therefore _consistent._ Demogorgon can rely on ixitxachitl cults to always give him souls and worship, day in and day out, for centuries.
