The best campaign I've ever seen with wererats had a colony making use of the fact that natural born wererats are stronger and have better control than infected lycanthropes. For pathfinder mechanics this was DR 10 instead of DR 5, faster shapeshifting, and allowed to have any alignment instead of forced into being evil. They even get to avoid rampages on a full moon if they're natural born. How does this matter? Wererat brothels, setting themselves up in a whorehouse and using the place as a baby factory for natural born lycans. Got to live in lush opulence, got to grow in power, got to merge seamlessly into human society, and generally stopped being evil because being lewd was just left them all so much better off. RIIiiiiight up until they accidentally infect someone, in which case they've got an evil wererat they need to hunt down. Cue a war between the sewerrats and the bedrats that us players ended up involved in.
@jonathanwells2234 жыл бұрын
You can be evil and not need to murder every time you are given an opportunity. Wererats cannot do what is described in your comment because one, they reek and two, they have an insatiable craving for human flesh.
@animorph174 жыл бұрын
@@jonathanwells223 As per pathfinder lore, that flesh craving was inevitable for infected rats (You know, the whole REASON they were forced to be an evil alignment) and wasn't innate to natural born wererats, though still tended to persist as a cultural artifact because inevitably you'll have infected rats raising and instilling their virtues into the natural born ones. The smell likewise is entirely because they tend to live in the sewers. Don't bathe in shit? You stop smelling like shit. Worth noting that a Ratling was also something completely different for older DnD settings and had nothing to do with lycanthropy whatsoever.
@s12y6o244 жыл бұрын
@@jonathanwells223 If they *do* have a craving for human flesh, could they have fed off of amputated limbs, and corpses of people who'd already died? If not the entire corpse, then only parts that wouldn't be visible?(like underneath the skin?) Granted, not everyone would be up for that; but a large city would probably have a lot of dead, and there would probably be people who wouldn't care what happens to them after they've died(i'm not really too worried about it myself). Even someone who wants something of themself left behind could probably be hollowed out(kinda like what's done with taxidermy)
@DragonsRocks0174 жыл бұрын
After watching this I want to finally get into DnD even tho I don't know anything about it and I want to do a naturally born human wererat who while young some homeless street kids actually befriended and would feed and play with them but one day he finds the clan killing the kids and forsakes his kind and flees and having another player in the party hopefully find a young child being hunted by 3 wererats and killing them taking in the young kid who doesn't seem to have any injuries and have this young kid grow up never showing or telling what he is thinking of this player as a parent type figure loving them as the closest person to them and actually being a friendly person who just loves all human species they can befriend hoping to one day be forced to transform to save their adoptive parent as a plot twist for the story to see what happens... But I've never played DnD and don't know what I'd need to play so I just joined the discord for the youtuber Taken20 to try to find out 😅. A really against the natural thing for their race I know but I just love this idea of a wererat who comes to want to protect people while hiding what he is and hate his kind that's why I was looking to see if naturally born ones get forced to transform during the full moon

@mrguppys7614 жыл бұрын
It's lycanthropy not lycan-thropy. Instead of using a single noun to label these creatures perhaps we should call them "people who are people, sometimes rat people and occasionally rats but also sometimes rat like entities that are sometimes human." I still don't know why fantasy worlds use real life words with clear dictionary meanings to explain things in their world when they could just simply explain things with a sentence or two. Instead they give us a single word and expect us to just know what it means despite most of us only having access to a dictionary for 1-3 decades.

In Ravenloft natural wererats do not have a bane common to their entire family, instead each one have a unique allergy at first unknown even to it. But more important than that, although they're still thieves and parasites, they are less bound to the sewers and more involved in the affairs of the city, although always in secret, passing as humans. There are entire wererat families with ties all around the world. While minor families or less talented individuals can live as the sewer beasts of common description, the more powerful ones become nobles or rich merchants, using the wealth of information they gather as and from rats for advantage against their political enemies. Among them the most powerful family is the Renier, and the matriarch Jacqueline Renier is both the tyrant and local hero of one of the most advanced nations in the setting, Richemulot, a place where, among other things, she encourages the legends about wererats as filthy beasts to ease things for her brethren and the population is mildly obsessed with cleanliness.

Always been VERY curious about how weres work in DnD. Why do specific ones have specific alignments? Do all were beasts of that type always have that alignment? How do their societies work and how do they interact with human societies? All these are fun questions.

this is going to be very useful. I'm making my own giant ass city campaign and thought of having wererats as a possible enemy or allies (depending on how the party goes) need to beef up the were rats effect on the city. also what other were creature are there officially? when i wanted to make a werebat i had to make it myself and the dm.

@@DragonsRocks017 it is. but you need to take note on where you tranform do to the wing spand and what your wearing cause again the wings. had to spend a bit extra on amor and cloths so i coudl freely transform. and a fun plot device for were-anything is the emerald dagger. this dagger is a magical item made of off emreals and has animals carfed inot the hadnle. and depending on what animal is carfed into the handle will curse any one stabed/cut with the dagger. randome by a nom magicl person or a spesific one if a magic person can forcus enough. and who eveer holds the dagger can command any of the were's made by the blade. my character was cursed that way and was looking for the dagger to destroy it since he didnt want to be inslaved.

A question related to the Dark Arts in D&D; If you have a limb removed and don't have it reattached or regenerated, but keep it nonetheless, do you have a part of your corpse? Or does it only become a part of your corpse once you die?
@frankieramos17484 жыл бұрын
I’d say semantically a corpse would have to be an entire dead person (obviously still counting of an arm or leg is missing) but an arm that got chopped off whether regrown or not I would say doesn’t count as a corpse and is just a chunk of dead flesh
@XeranDereth4 жыл бұрын
Can you make your arm a murderer's hand if you're still alive? Can you rip your arm off, raise it as a murderer's hand, and then tape it to your arm and then rip it off and throw it at people as an attack? These are questions that need to be answered.

Okay, so let's ramp this theoretical up to 11. If you got bisected horizontally, and were magically healed in a way that you get to keep living for a long time, what to you call your lower half? "The rest of my body", "Half of my corpse", "A fraction of my body that is currently dying", etc? It's solely a question of when does the term "corpse" apply to a lost limb. Demon lawyers are the worst.

On werebeast, I home brewed a pureblood variant. These are creatures that were not born or turned by a bite, but contracted the curse by divine interventions. They are chosen of said god, they are typical 5 CR higher then the normal variant as a base. Also the weapon has to be both magic and silver to not be resistant.

I really hope werebears are next. My character is a slight homebrewed werebear. For campaign purposes he was nerfed (his clan cursed and stuck in hybrid form, and did not have immunities or resistances ) and in the homebrew world he comes from a clan of natural born werebears that were guardians of the great forest. Druid werebear with barbarian mentality is alot of fun. His side quest of lifting the curse got completed 10 levels early though by one of the other players getting 3 wishes from the deck of many things. Gained all stats and ability to shift again at lvl4 and was kinda game breaking but fun, even for the DM who had to get more creative with game balance.

The main thing they don't tell you is that they suffer from rattanthropy, not lycanthropy. "Lycos" refers to the wolf part, FYI.
@ShurikenSean4 жыл бұрын
one thing I always wondered about lycanthropes in general is the 5e stats say "can't speak in animal form" which seems to imply they can speak in hybrid form which might seem strange to some. guess it comes down to if they'd even have a reason to speak to other creatures. another is what happens to a tabaxi thats turned into a weretiger? do they just get a larger hybrid form in addition to their normal tabaxi form or do they instead get a human form? like would it just be like they become a "werehuman" (the most cruel of all lycanthropes)
