After the IS20 turbo blows on this gentleman's car, he found metal parts in his oil pan. In this video we cover what to look at if your turbo blows and what he can do to make sure his GTI engine is as safe as possible.
Please note many of these recommendations were made around his specific issue and not all MK7 turbos failures would lead to metal parts in your oil pan.

1. I totally thought the answer to this question would be buy and install an IS38 turbo, but it’s more complicated than that lol 2. Is it a concern as to what caused the failure? Will it happen again? 3. Are those VW monopoly’s easy to find? Or where can we get one?

I’ve got a golf r mk7, was on the highway lost all power car went into limp mode, after trying to repeatedly start it, car threw white smoke out the exhaust non stop. Which was the engine oil being burnt up and now the engine won’t start and turbo fans have disintegrated.

same problem here on my mk7 golf r. What were the repair steps you took. Just happened yesterday so.... I think I got a good starting spot but dont really know if it is the turbo or seals/rings type thing?? no engine noise though. Starts but putters w/ extreme smoke and wet oil in the tailpipe. Slight oil leak/drip coming from back center of engine area onto the ground. Could not find the actual location of the leak but seemed to be dripping down from at least 6" up. Lots of heat shields obstructing my view. Sure to find out more this weekend but if you or anyone can give me some pointers I would appreciate it thanks.

LOVE the show. It's so helpful. I have a 2009 Audi TTS (8J) and was thinking of getting the Haldex performance control unit but I wanted to know if having the car in AWD actually improves performance as in 0-100kph (0-62mph) times. I can't seem to find any comparisons between having it in AWD all the time and having it in standard mode and only activating when it loses traction. Please help.

Now I’m worried about mine going. At least I know I did everything possible to avoid it. 5k oil changes should be a requirement for most IMO.

My 2016 GTI with 95K is completely stock and I don’t drive it real hard. Do these turbos break often enough that they should be replaced as a maintenance item at a certain mileage? It seems like all the ones I hear about breaking come from tuned cars which to me means they are probably driven a little harder than normal?

You can drive it hard, but you shouldn't overheat it and don't turn off engine right after hard driving. Change oil frequently, maintain your car and you shouldn't have any problems with turbos.

I have a 2015 with 82k and had a stage 1 APR since 20k, drive it fairly hard but the turbo is still in good shape. As said make sure you don’t turn it off right after driving hard let it idle so the turbo can cool. Realistically these newer turbos should last upwards of 100k miles, catastrophic failure is unlikely. I’ve heard the first half of 2014 there was an issue with oiling for the turbos but was fixed later in the model year. If you’re really concerned remove the turbo and inspect it, replace or upgrade it if there’s excessive wear.

Use a heat gun and let the I/c sit for 24hrs after flushing with water. This way any leftover water will dry/evaporate.
