I am 9 days post op. Although my surgeon did a great job answering questions prior to surgery I wound up having many more questions especially during the night when I couldn’t sleep and was in pain. The swelling that occurred 4 days post op was the most concerning. I have swelling from my thigh to my toes, and the skin in my thigh and leg is firm. Your videos alleviated my fear and anxiety but also que’ed me to contact my surgeon’s office for more information. Keep these videos coming. This NP thinks guys are a hoot!

I also had both knees replaced, about 18 months apart. I agree that the physical rehab is very important. The flexing of the knee by the rehab staff is very painful but also very essential in recovering full motion of the new joint. Don't bother replacing the knee joint if you can't push thru the rehab process.

Started with PT 3 times a week. I'm down to once a week for PT. Walk without cane even though I carry my hiking stick with me just in case I it need after a long walk. still have some swelling on top of the knee but was told that was normal. Still do my stretching exercise every day 6 to 10 times a day. Pain management helped a lot, take your medication at home and before you go to PT and always use ice packs.

I just had surgery early April of this year & I am thankful to have seen ur videos prior. However there are a few things that I did not know were gonna happen. This may not happen to everyone, but it did happen. So I thought I'd share: One, have a support system with those u trust. I was on an emotional roller coaster. I could be very happy and comfortable, then automatically cry, even when there was no pain. My counselor & therapist let me know it's normal & lots of people feel this, it's just an accumulation of emotions, anxiety/fear, that need to be released. Ur gonna be OK. Two, sleep maybe 2-3 hrs on a good night, but after 4 weeks, I was able to sleep 5-6 hrs. Rest during the day as much as u can. Three, sharp pains on the side of my knee. Dr. & therapist let me know this is nerve pain and it will (and has) subsided. Four, top of knee becoming sensitive to light fabrics. Made it very difficult to sleep at night or wear loose fitting pants. After 5 weeks, I still have to cover my knee while sleeping. But this too I'm told will subside. Pls make sure to take care of urself & drink LOTS of water. 💛

I wanted to follow up with both of you. I subscribed about 5 or 6 weeks ago. So, I started listening to gain more knowledge in preparation for my right knee replacement. I'm 54 and put this off for years. I finally did it on February 7th 2019!! This video was pretty honest about the pain. The first week the pain is like a never ending child birth. My first night home I decided I didn't need all of the pain medicine. BIG MISTAKE. They told me the pain block would wear off in 12 to 14 hours. Mine must have had some lingering pain relief. I was almost in tears that night, rapid breathing and not thinking clearly from the pain. Then I worked out a medication schedule. First week was horrific. Decades ago I blew a disc in my back and had a ruptured ovary years ago. The knee replacement pain is worse. However, I wish I did it sooner like everyone says. I'm at week 2 and no longer need a walker or cane. The internal joint pain I lived with for years is gone. PT is awesome. Still not sleeping well because I wake up with throbbing. So I take naps. Tomorrow I'm making lasagna and having friends over. After 2 weeks my knee is straight and I have 110 degree bend in my knee. I'm so excited to be able to walk again. Totally worth the bad week I experienced!!

I’ve worked in orthopaedics since 1981... I currently work in pre op and agree with everything. Pain management, keeping PT appts and active. Swelling management. I always say don’t assess how happy for at least a year. A big shopping trip or travel may bring swelling back....Knee replacements are hard work compared with hip replacements. If offered bilateral TKR .... rarely a good idea! We have one surgeon who gives patients false expectations...Videos like yours should be directed to by operating consultant/attending at the pre op meeting. I laughed so hard at the golf comments.... I also suggest meet your mates t the clubhouse after a bit of putting and chipping....the psychological impact a surgery takes is almost always forgotten. If a patient knows he can still do ‘stuff’ it makes a huge difference! Thank you!

I haven’t had any issues with “withdrawal” from meds. In fact, Oxycodone did nothing for the pain and that was the only drug I was prescribed that could possibly become addictive. I just took 2 extra-Strength Tylenol instead, alternating with Celebrex, Flexeril, and Gabapentine (all 3 are non-addictive), plus 80 mg, of aspirin for one month (to prevent blood clots.) I wouldn’t advise refusing pain-meds after total knee replacement. They are carefully monitored by your doctor, or they should be.

I wish that I had seen your videos on total knee replacement before surgery. You guys are so wonderful and your information invaluable!!! I'm a very active 65 year old that swims laps and walks every day even though walking can get painful because of knee arthritis, bone spurs and no full extension after a not very successful ACL/meniscus surgery in 2000. After the knee replacement 6 days ago in recovery, my surgeon came and told me that everything went great but that he also had to remove a screw from the prior ACL surgery and put in a bone graft to fill up that space. I would need to be 50% weight bearing now instead of 100%. That threw me for a loop as we had never discussed it and I've been his patient for 5 years. My appt to go back is in 3 weeks and they'll Xray it and let me know if I can put more weight on it. Are you familiar with having to remove hardware and filling it in with a bone graft? Are they usually successful and how long does it take to heal as I also have osteoporosis. I am very determined about PT, icing and whatever I need to do to get ROM....I'm just worried about the graft and doing everything correctly! Thanks for any help!!!!

Here in Brevard County FL I received a booklet that gave me specific instructions and in that booklet I was told to walk 500 ft per day ... went to Publix today and walked probably 800 ft with too much trouble but that doesn't take the place of my home PT when I am not at the outpatient PT office ... This op is not for sissies I can tell you that but it will be worth it in the long run. Ice Ice Ice ... and take your meds .... and if they are opioids , take a stool softener ....

Going to outpt PT 3x/wk since week 3. At my 6 wk check up I scheduled the LTKA for 5/4. Haven’t forgotten about the post op pain, but being able to walk on the operative leg without knee pain is sooooooo liberating that I want this on the left and I love seeing my straight leg. I had my TKR 3 weeks ago. I requested early PT because my surgeon had me wait with the first one I had and I had to have MUS at around 9 weeks and I thought earlier PT might help. This time I took your advice to do prehab. My surgery was a day surgery because of Covid. The day afterwards I got a call from a physical therapist that my surgeon ordered home PT so I started it at 3 days after surgery. During those 3 days I followed your advice. At my three week post op appointment I had 105° bending and 0° extension. Now I start outpatient PT here in town for 6 more weeks. I was released to drive even, and can walk without my cane fir short walking distance in the house only. I am so thankful I found your videos!!

The reason trying for 0• extension is so important is if one leg is partially bent (not straight like the other leg) you will walk with a limp. The bent leg in effect becomes the shorter of the two when you stand.

"6 weeks before driving" I drove myself home from the hospital 5 days after the operation, but then again, "I come from the land Downunder, where women glow and men plunder". The hardest part of my op was I hadn't shit for three days after the op. Every time a nurse came in to do the observations they gave me a glass of "Squirtlax" or something like that. So on the fourth day I have had about 3 hours sleep since going into the hospital and my knee feels like it has been welded on and I have to constantly try and get in and out of bed so I don't shit myself. I must have done about 12 dunny runs. You know when something starts to hurt so much that you start to feel nauseous and you get the sweaty chills? Yup, what an awesome experience my TKR was.

I have had my left knee replacement a year and 4 months. My leg feels awesome... but, it has taken me along time to get back in a normal regimen... it’s very painful... my physical therapy did hurt... but because I was getting my muscles stretched... it was like a feel good pain... I didn’t know most people who get this operation gain about 14-20 pounds... keep that in mind too.. your not able to do your workout the same, your walking slower, and just not as active because it still is painful, though less painful over time,for at least 8 months... but, today I am glad I did it... it’s a relief to be out of that old knee pain.. but, I need to get the other one done.. and I am putting it off till my weight is down.., I must be a comfortable with my weight..
@TalkingWithDocs5 жыл бұрын
Hi Aimee. Glad to hear you are doing well. We would not say that our patients are routinely gaining 14-20 pounds with the surgery. In the early stages there may be some subtle weight gain from fluid retention but this would improve relatively quickly. Continued success to you. Thanks for watching.

I did drive about a month after replacement but I know that won't be the case this time. lol. One thing I didn't like about therapy was/is this practice of "pushing" down on the knee to get it straight. Is that absolutely necessary. It literally had me crying.
@TalkingWithDocs4 жыл бұрын
Hi Alice. Thanks for sharing your story. And yes, pushing down on the knee to get it straight is absolutely necessary. If you are unable to get it fully straight it makes it difficult to walk and stand and requires much more energy to support your quads. Hope that clarifies things. The surgery went great. But PT went like crap. They didn't realize the sharp pain in my outer knee was because my leg was now 1/2-inch shorter. I couldn't do many of the exercises or straighten my leg. Finally after 8 months I was at the VA for my foot and the doctor measured my legs. Gave me a 1/2-inch lift and as I walked out of his office, the sharp pain was gone and after a day I could straighten my leg more. But the muscles were pretty well set and walking is still uncomfortable on the top part of my knee. Thanks for all the great info and your time. Take care and happy new year. :)

Excellent and informative info. I had a total knee replacement and was surprised at how much pain I had. I thought In had a fairly high pain threshhold. Being a personal trainer working with a lot of rehab cases. I was frustrated at my lack of range of motion. After 3 weeks, I asked my therapist to contact the hospital, which she did and they told me to come in the following day. The surgeon could see immediately that my problm was the quick growth of scar tissue. I must state that though I'm 71, I'm a training freak, so I pushed myself as much as I could. The following day I was put under general anæsthetic and had the scar tissue ruptured ( I'm Danish and don't know the English terminology ). From then on I trained 3 times a day , determined to return to my best condition , which I have. My question is; if and when I may need to have the other knee replaced, could I expect to undergo the same problem, and do you think the pain was increased due to the scar tissue and my limited ROM?
@TalkingWithDocs7 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve. Congratulations on the hard work. It sounds like you may have had a manipulation. This is occasionally done. The best way to avoid requiring this the second time is to avoid getting stiff in the first place. The best way to do this is to aggressively control your pain and swelling with as many safe methods as you can get your hands on. Keep up the good work.

These are two of the nicest people. It is 2021 and just had bilateral quad repair. Wanted to commend on in home. Not for everyone.. but....in the beginning when working on ROM and basics... if.... you get the right p/t... they show you what to do and set goals.... not a fan of patients who only do exercises in front of p/t then feel entitled to not do anything until next session. Having had alot of p/t i would rather do some small exercises at home in front of my tv every day, then a 20 min massage/stretch once a week

Thanks so much for your kind words Boomer. And thanks for sharing your experience with bilateral quadriceps ruptures. Wow. Lots of hard work on your part. All the best going forward. Stay safe. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing if you did.

Hi JT CROWNS. Yes we try and keep it real. Having said that we have many patients who prove the average wrong. Lots of hard work can overcome some of the timelines. Good luck and thanks for watching.

Thanks for this very informative video!!! I will be getting my knee replaced this coming April and they are doing the spinal block. I am extremely nervous about this as I would prefer to be out cold, dont want to here or have any acknowledgment as to what what is happening! 😳

Mayo Clinic gives you a pamphlet for rehab and are very stingy with pain relief.
@TalkingWithDocs6 жыл бұрын
Hi John. That is surprising for a clinic of their stature. Pain relief is critical and often requires large doses of medications. This is temporary but necessary to increase the chances of success. Physio also requires much more than a pamphlet. Going to physio is part of the process but doing the exercises at home diligently is the key. Thanks for sharing.

I'm five days post-surgery. I love your videos and information. My worst pain seems to come from my hip/lower back. I can almost feel the tendons spasming. Hopefully, it won't last long.
