Excellent advice. This happened to me (us) in Dallas. My wife was filling up the car; I was the passenger. Guy (young fellow) on a motorbike pulled up to the pump behind us. I don’t know if he didn’t see me or what but he approached my wife, asking her for money to put some gas in his motorcycle. I didn’t really think anything about him (he had pulled up to a gas pump as normal) until he engaged my wife, asking for money. I immediately hopped out of the car and uncovered the shirttail concealing my holstered EDC and made sure he saw it. (You can do this in Texas, without worrying about “brandishing” because Texas allows concealed or open carry). I loudly warned him to back away from my wife and that we had no money for him. He saw the holstered pistol and immediately began to back away... all the while claiming, “Hey man I just needed a buck or two for some gas.” [I suspect he had a purse grab & snatch planned as his motorcycle faced in the direction for a fast and seemless get away; full face-covering helmet on the whole time]. WMart middle of the day.

Happened to me in the middle of the day, downtown Wichita, KS. Two guys watching me across the street use a credit card to fill my car up...one goes around the front of the car the other approached me from around the back, both hands inside his coat. "Got a dollar"? They weren't there for a dollar, they were there to jack my ass. Simply reaching around back and putting my hand on my weapon (4:30) they both stopped right where they were and of course acted like I was the one out of line. Close as I have ever come to drawing a gun on someone and couldn't stop shaking the rest of the day. Make sure you don't get tunnel vision and focus on one, they often work in pairs.

Taking the time to read the replies, I've realized I've been in this situation several times since I started driving a truck for a living. The only thing I've noticed and my brother had pointed out most won't approach me because of the way I carry myself when I get out of my truck. He says the way he felt was I wasn't in a good mood and it would be best to just leave me alone. He was on the truck riding with me when we had this discussion. Since then I guess he's right because after he mentioned it I started watching people closer and I've noticed the ones that would approach had no ill will but they were extremely cautious approaching me and wouldn't come within arms reach of me without permission. I guess when you carry yourself in a manner that let's everyone know that you don't have time they tend to stay back.

This is very common how carjackings happen in Detroit. I would add to put the pump or your car in between them if possible. Sometimes gas pumps have large cement or metal supports to hold the awning up and protect the pumps. This would also provide cover. The important thing is when you are approached like this, is that many times the person approaching you may be a distraction. So be alert for other cars and people. I've seen many robbery and shooting videos where people were distracted or ambushed from behind.

I think it is a great idea to train ourselves to look for options, to look for solutions to scenarios. It seems like a good state of mind, and complements a situational awareness attitude. Obviously it isn't always possible to avoid bad situations, but people need to make travel and location choices with safety in mind. I think it needs to be said: make it a point to not put yourself in situations like the gas station late at night, or convenience stores at 2:00AM, or the shortcut through the sketchiest part of town. Do the things in your life that help you stay out of potentially dangerous situations.

Never get below 1/4 full, and avoid fueling at night if you have a choice--you almost always do. Choose a station that's well-lit and attended, preferably one where other cars are being fueled. When you get out to refuel, lock the doors behind you. If someone approaches in a manner that gives you the willies, click off the pump and quickly head inside. To reiterate: Don't ever get so low on fuel that you can't be selective in where you stop, and never refuel where there's no inside attendant. Just don't. Be smart and be safe. Use good judgement. Avoid adding risk that you didn't have to add.

I agree with both techniques and ultimately would make the call depending on the person's size, stature and demeanor. To the best of my knowledge there IS no law for brandishing a weapon in WI. It goes from "you've shown it" to "DA decides if it was a threat, assault or move of self-defense" I think if you're in low-ready it's your best bet. Quite ironic, as the thugs don't know it... but at 6'3" 200lbs my stature helps but I have 15 pieces of titanium in my neck that prevent taking any kind of hit. Then we get into "equalization of force", because of my handicap am I easier justified in using OR displaying a firearm? The bottom line: It's still a situational call, but the actions of strong verbal commands and body language are your best start. Thugs are looking for victims not a fight.

This is exactly what happened to me and exactly how I responded. Outside of a liquor store at night, I saw the guy hanging around after I pulled into the parking spot. When I came out, I didn't see him so thought nothing about it, just remained aware. Loaded the beer in the back of the vehicle when I could see him through the windshield walking at the front of my vehicle. Because I was parked next to another there was only 2 ways out 1. towards him or 2. towards the rear of the vehicle. I looked over my shoulder to make sure he didn't have a friend and walked backwards to the corner of the rear bumper. He was now walking between my truck and the car looking me straight in the eyes and mumbling I put my left hand up, pushed my right hand around the open front of my coat and on the grip of my gun at the 4 o'clock and said "I'm not the kind of M****rF****r you mess with". Luckily it was enough to make him take off. I was lucky he wasn't suicidal because he was obviously high. One other observation was he had to be hiding between my drivers door and the next car because I didn't see him until I opened the passenger back door to put the beer in, It must have been where he was going to ambush me. I believe it was one of those 3 million crimes that was deterred by law abiding armed citizens.

He sprayed them until they retreated back into there van and left. I always remember this when getting gas in the case something Similar happens and I can't get to a weapon. Wanna know the best way to get rid of a pan handler? Just tell them you don’t carry cash. 95% of the time that ends the conversation because a real panhandler will move on. If they continue after that, they are not a panhandler and you should assume they intend you harm and act accordingly.

Sorry but if you are panhandling at night at a gas station, you’re sketchy. Recently called non emergency on a guy doing that. Why do you need money on Friday night? You had all day to panhandle bro. Don’t do that sketchy shit in the dark with your hands in your pockets.

I have a couple of problems with that scenario. 1) If it's a "scary" gas station... why did you pull into it unless an emergency. Also you should not have waited so long to put gas in. 2) Situational Awareness would've put you in a better position to deal with it. 3) A pocket pistol? Really? Good luck drawing that in an emergency.

John Smith jr You were making a point about women being equal. Your assailant, who may or may not be a woman, probably doesn't know that you are carrying a weapon either. Just because you don't see a weapon doesn't mean they aren't armed. Just about anything, used properly, can be a weapon. Gender, size, age within a wider range than you may think or race makes no difference if you are being attacked. In Brazil packs of street kids, boys and girls, with little knives can take everything you have in moments. By the way if you do start hitting the kids larger, older kids will show why that is a bad idea. So women, whether you see a weapon or not are equally dangerous. Who would you let walk up on you a scruffy man or a "helpless, pathetic" little woman?

I wonder how this type of scenario would play out in a "duty to retreat" state like mine. Suppose the person approaches with a knife in hand and an angry look. Am I supposed to abandon my car and belongings? If I drew my firearm would I get in trouble for menacing? In my state the law says I have to make an effort to retreat before using deadly force, so does that mean running on foot away from my car? I just wish the law made it easier for legally armed citizens to defend what is theirs.
@Shinobi1Kenobi6 жыл бұрын
I would interpret duty to retreat as moving to a better state ASAP. A long time ago, I lived in a state where duty to retreat applied even inside your own domicile after dark. I was a commissioned LEO in another state and I was living there temp for grad school. When I checked in with the sheriff, he told me about this. I was young. I laughed at him. He chuckled and said, "I know...I know. But I have a duty to inform you. It even applies to us and it's stupid." (meaning his deputies and himself in their own homes) They called it "duty to flee," and he specifically game me the example of bailing out a window and abandoning his own family to home invaders. I got the Hell out of there as soon as my coursework was over and never went back.

I went into a crowded Walmart. Before I could lock, clear, and walk away from my car, a woman came up to me begging for money. The time it takes to stop the car, shut off the engine and exit puts us at a disadvantage! Her man was there with his car. Although I had my pocket pistol I gave in, and have $4 just to get rid of her. I should have them reported them to management. There is no substitute for vigilance.
@brookeduncan96996 жыл бұрын
This is why if you carry a gun you should also carry less lethal options like a flashlight, oc spray, and for god's sake, some sound judgement as it relates to reading people and the context of what they're doing and saying. A gun is a tool of last resort. There are usually better options available than pulling your gun or pantomiming like you're going to pull it out every time some dude living under a bridge asks you for change. Shoot an unarmed homeless vet let's say because he was "coming at you", whatever the hell that means, and you will more than likely be arrested for murder. Think about how things really are as they're happening and be very attuned to how things can be when the dust settles and everyone is thinking rationally.

All these comments and no one has mentioned besides be aware of your surroundings, also know that if someone becomes overly threatening while your pumping gas you can easily in a swift movement douse the thug with gasoline in the face and or body! My uncle told me back in the 70s he had to do that, so I keep that mind set when fueling if needed. Be sure to hide your keys and valuables in your console or under seat while pumping they’re doing snatch and grab and car jackings. ..I also conceal carry a firearm in my vehicle these days.

Or put your keys in your pocket. There's no reason to leave them in the car. Most cars these days can lock remotely with a push on the fob, so that eliminates the valuables problem.

@@steveblomefield9513 On a road trip how long does it take to charge a Tesla or electric car? I was talking to a guy who worked on Teslas when I was working out one time. He said one would probably have to stop in Albuquerque and recharge the batteries and wait for that to be done before proceeding on to Phoenix. This video was almost no help. What if the stranger doesn’t stop? What if he doesn’t produce a weapon but says he has one? What if he asks for your stuff with a hand in his pocket? What if there are two strangers? The warning might stop an honest person who is just looking for a handout but it is probably no more useful than a sticker on a door that says “no guns” to a robber. And calling for help? Really? No one you have to call can help you in the moment. Help is just a clean up crew.

Your best bet to to de escalate the situation, use compassion and give them something. Being stand-off ish can lead to confrontation and it’s not worth shooting someone over nothing. This is very silly,I guess you avoid situations if you consider everyone a threat.I grew up in a crime ridden dirty city in NY State so I'm never fearful of stopping at any gas station,more cautious maybe.I usually talk to them for a second while their approaching like ghetto elevator talk,get a feel for um, always having a quick look around to see if anyone else is near(of course) and if I'm comfortable I may give them just change and send them on their way or I'll just say, sorry can't help you out just put my last few bucks in gas... something like that.I do tend to firm my stance but I've never been attacked in these situations.I think calling for help just wastes police officers time if the person didn't even get close to you just drop it, really.
