Situational awareness. When out in public even in a car stay alert. Your dad saw it coming and took control like a boss. My kind of man.

You have a cool Dad. He stayed in control and kept his composure. I know I wouldn't want to piss him off.

The deadliest weapon that we have is that lump of grey matter between our ears. I've thought my way out of more tight situations than I've ever shot my way out of. A quote from Evan Marshall, a Detroit police officer for 20 years! Another great quote from Evan "The idea is to protect the Innocent, not kill the Guilty! "

I'm glad I did not see anyone say, "Shoot!" I have gone to the wrong car a few times... Locking the doors is key. Not having the windows down is also a good thing. If it is someone behaving like you described, making eye contact and expressing your intent to resist does wonders. The bad guys don't want to fight. They are looking for the sheep. Your Dad did the right thing.

Beth, have you given your kids a safeword or multiple words: "Down!" (hit the floor/take cover) "Run!" (follow me - as you're grabbing them but may also need to be reaching for your firearm) and finally something that says "Take cover behind me... Mama Bear has to fight."? Finally, if they're too young at what age would you teach that?
@USCCAOfficial7 жыл бұрын
Tom, teaching your kids a safe word is a great idea! If you have a safe word use an unusual word that an intruder wouldn't realize is a safe word. Also, practice drills with them, so in case they're ever in a situation they will be prepared and know what to do. When it comes to what age to start teaching that, it's all up to you. You want to make sure that your kids can understand why they are doing this and that they will know what to do if ever in the situation.

Obviously having a weapon and being ready to use it is important , but attitude ( which your father showed) is important or more important too. It' works on people and it works 0on dogs too. lol

I have had a Doberman and a German Shepherd come after my dog and me in separate incidents even when I yelled at them to get out of there and took an aggressive stance between them and my dog. The Doberman was especially aggressive and I was lucky enough to grab his collar and hold him off until his owner came and got him. Sprained my hand in the process.

Doors are *always* locked when no one is going through them. If my wife or whoever is with me gets out of the vehicle, I lock the doors behind them and only unlock them when my friends or family reaches for the handle. It doesn't matter which seat I'm in, I always do this.

Thanks for the scenario & giving me cause to pause. Now that you have presented it & I am comfortable at my dining room table I can see it differently than perhaps I would have in the moment. I have been in a van full of family on vacation also. After listening to your experience I would get out and move to the driver's seat; keys stay with me. Stay in a position of control as much as possible. Visibility is limited in the far back seat. Seems a little cumbersome to move then switch back after the shopping but that is an option verses being "stuck" as you framed it in the far back of a vehicle. I am thankful the person turned away with the strong, non-verbal expression of dad's and that this situation did not present itself to be a more dedicated aggressor. I would not have come to this plan if I hadn't gleaned from your experience. Thank you.

For me, if they are an aggressive individual intent on hurting or killing me I would step my 6’1” 250lb ass out of the car and use my 30 years of ass whooping to dole the biggest, deadliest, flesh rippingest, bone snapping fight you ever saw. Then I would call my lawyer.

I would have 911 ready to be dialed. I would have the doors locked already. At his first attempt to enter the vehicle, hit dial on My phone. When the 921 operator picks and asks what's my emergency, give location first and say a suspicious person i do not know is trying to gain entry in a vehicle I'm in and I do need law enforcement assistance immediately. Location first. If the call is randomly disconnected before I state my emergency, they at least have a location to go on...

That’s a good question 🤔 I honestly don’t know but I know I would of had my Ruger Compact 9 in my hand not pointing it but it would of been ready and I probably would of said a quick little prayer like please let this man go about his business

1st, an armed person should not find him/herself in an inferior position to unarmed companions. Chinese fire drill it when the gang jumped out to run into Walmart or stand outside the vehicle (I smoke, so this one is easy). Second, if I think I MIGHT need my pistol it is in my hand. It may still be holstered. It may remain hidden in a pocket, bag, under a blanket/jacket, or just below the line of sight...probably so. The person with a gun in their hand when the gunfight starts usually wins.

I wouldn't be stuck back in the back corner unless someone else I trusted was more "available." Then again, my dad is dead. He was probably more like your dad. But at my age, I don't allow myself to be buried in the vehicle. Just me.

@iamedbytes7 жыл бұрын
XSourStarX if the gun was visible that could be considered brandishing which is a crime. Also she wasn't next to the window on that side. If you meant having the gun in your hand but out of sight that could work.

iamedbytes I wouldn't allow him to approach the car. What the father did was perfect. If I was in the back seat, I'd be reinforcing what the father was doing, which was saying to not approach the vehicle. Key thing to be aware.. I would never have been in the back seat, being the one that was armed, being the "paranoid" one of the group, I call it being situationally aware, but whatever. In her exact position.. I would have been giving instructions as he was approaching, if the guy were to reach in or whatever, move away from window, I would have been angling myself for a clear shot towards the window.. at no point brandishing the fire arm.. it would have been in my holster until I needed it.
