I don't answer the door unless I recognize the person and I always have my 9mm "little friend" with me. We have a "No Solicitors" sign right by the doorbell. I just yell through the door to unknown persons. There have been a lot of criminals in our area trying to gain entry to houses by posing as vacuum cleaner salespeople and similar ploys. No one needs to be in your house demonstrating a vacuum cleaner and at the same time looking to see what valuables you may have.

I feel for the vacuum cleaner bit my self i'm embarrassed to admit. But I purposefully told them times I would in fact be at home when they were prodding with their questions. When they popped in through the front door I said to them I thought i'd be seeing you guys tonight. I was waiting for you to show up, I went ahead and got out some rope and hankies since I knew you guys would think the home was vacant and wouldn't need any. I figured when you saw me here the first thing you'd want to do is tie and gag me to keep me quiet and out of the way. So I continued to surrender myself to them and watched as they cleared me out. I waited a good deal after the left to make sure they weren't coming back before I loosened myself enough to phone the authorities, of course returning my tie and gag till they got there to preserve the crime scene. I was then released by the police and gave them my statement. they criminals were apprehended weeks later and my stuff was eventually returned.

Have a home defense plan/protocol, and practice it. In our protocol, the "knock at the door" scenario is covered under the topic of "U3." It stands for unknown, uninvited, and unauthorized. The way that the hypothetical scenario would play out in accordance with our protocol, assuming single adult responder: 1) Ideally, the person's vehicle should be detected upon arrival, either by dogs and/or humans, and thus initiating the protocol. For the purpose of the hypothetical, we'll pretend that this has failed for whatever reason, and the knock at the door is our first notice that a "U3" is on the premises. 2) From the knock at the door, the children go to their designated place, from which they do not leave until we tell them to. There are No Trespassing, No Solicitation, Beware of Dog, etc. signs clearly posted; so a knock at the door is assumed to be a person who is in violation until proven otherwise. 3) Visual check of the driveway. Unless the "U3" turns out to be a known neighbor who failed to/couldn't call ahead, the presence of a "U3" with the absence of a vehicle this deep into rural countryside on a road to nowhere is automatically suspicious enough to call it in. In the hypothetical scenario, the presence or absence of a vehicle was not specified. 4) If unarmed at the time, this is the point to go get armed. 5) Visual check to the other side of the door, and verbal challenge, all without opening the door. In this scenario, a "U3" woman with a baby who is saying that she needs help. By the protocol, communication will be maintained, but the door will not be opened, and the fire department would be called for presumed medical emergency. Even if it turns out to be a safety/security emergency, the fire department is still the closest first response asset. They frequently respond to calls where the situation is murky and law enforcement has been dispatched, because they can put eyes on the situation and directly communicate. Law enforcement response times are not good out here, but they have been improving since we elected a new Sheriff. 6) In the event that the "U3" is discovered to be engaged in any deception whatsoever, it is now a law enforcement matter. Attempting to obtain goods or services under false pretenses is a misdemeanor offense in this state. If the woman were to begin escalating, getting verbally aggressive, it is now a law enforcement situation. If the woman attempts to gain entry, there will be some reasonable level of force used to stop the attempt - baby or no. The safety of our children in our home comes first.

My personal plan is to open my phone and see who is there using my doorbell camera and seek with the person there though the camera. Then depending on what they say I will either tell them to go away or that I am dialing 911 and will have an ambulance and an officer come check on them and help if needed. I will not open the door unless I see someone I know or someone who is legitimately hurt. Furthermore if they are legitimately hurt I would not allow them in my home, I would come to them by getting my jump bag and leaving through a different exit locking it behind me all after calling for PD and EMS. I will of course have my CCW on me and check the rest of the home perimeter with the surrounding cameras before I exit. Good news is all of my doors are reinforced and can not be broken into without tools, no kick will bust down my doors.

I was at my friends house. We heard a LOUD knock on the door. We grabbed the sharpest knive's in his house.We saw throught to the hole and the man had his hand on the hole so we couldn't see. We opened the door, no one was there. A week later on the news i heared: 45 Year Old Man Kidnaps 4 Children, It said he decapitated them and sold their organs. So if we didin't get the knive's and just opened the door.. I wouldn't be here. At all.

If you cannot see out the door. Remedy that immediately. Install TWO peepholes if you need to put one at the kid's height as well as adult's height. Having had an attempted home invasion, I replaced my backdoor with a steel door and put 4" screws on the deadbolt. It's VERY easy to increase the screw length on your door. Your builder/previous homeowner may have only put 1&1/2" screws on the door. With JUST a decent screwdriver and some elbow grease you can put longer screws in. To go to 4" you may need a drillbit. It's worth the effort. In my case a late teen KICKED HARD 6 or more times and the door didn't give. Was it luckier for him or me? With the Castle Doctrine in WI, I would have been justified in using lethal force... fortunately I didn't need to use force, call the USCCA and deal with all the requirements. A call to 911, being a good witness helped my other neighbors as I learned there was a group of late teens trying houses in a 2-3 block area at random. 1. Create sight through/around the door. 2. Fortify the Door 3. Be prepared to retreat, call 911, defend if you must.

Something similar happened to me a while back. I ended up telling the young lady I would call the police and that she could go through my gate and hide until the police got there. The unexpected change of plans and my controlling the situation really gave me an opportunity to evaluate the whole deal while still feeling like I was able to help. Also, I had good visibility around most of the house, so I was comfortable waiting with her until she saw the ex drive away.

iamedbytes Yes! cameras! I installed these all around the perimeter of my exterior. A couple of my neighbours questioned why I was doing such a thing, I gave them no information. Once you get the cable run for these, it's basically done. And yes, these are not expensive now. With the night vision cameras these can't be beat for knowing who is at you door, also I can see if others are hiding around the corners of my house.

Yes, there are more good intentions than bad. However, it is wise to be cautious. Our elderly neighbors were held captive for 12 hours with just the scenario this video highlighted. They opened the door for woman asking for help and were then shoved in by her two male accomplices. They tied them up and ransacked their house, ate food, sat around, and then finally left. Family of the elderly couple found them when they came to visit, tied up!

I'm watching this with my girlfriend and her first response to there's a knock at the door "how would they even get here we're in the middle of nowhere" which is followed by "I'd check the cameras before doing anything" Ok so first There is nobody who can kick down front door that's number one you'd have to drive a truck into it Then I own a lot of guns and everyone knows how to use them If not that they have my dogs all are large trained attack dogs If not I'll be called I'm a big dude I've been trained to fight and if need be kill so I don't care who it is if I get a call they can sit in the house safe until I show up at which point they will leave one way or another
