What he is doing is a viable tactic, but it's also a tactic that relies heavily on athleticism. In a real fight, a bigger opponent who rushes you is not going to be so easy to dissuade. Momentum alone can put you on your ass with a big man on top of you if you're not careful.The key is to continue to move, but to move at an angle-never straight backwards. If you think a 140lb man is going to blunt the onrush of a 220lb man, you just don't know reality. That said, as is the case in the vast majority of all fights, agility(and speed) is paramount. The guy who can keep his balance and strike from any angle is far better equipped than the guy who "hits hard" but has no agility. If the bigger guy is more agile than you are- You're pretty much fucked. To me, lateral movement is key. You have to be able to get out of the way using angles if you want to control a stronger foe. Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking the technique. In the right hands it's a very good one, but for the average Joe it could very easily end in disaster.

One interpretation of how to avoid being overpowered by a larger opponent while using this technique is not to try and 'stop' their momentum per say, but to maintain distance between your hips/legs and their arms (if they are attempting a tackle/takedown). If they keep pushing, maintain that forward leaning position and let your feet kind of slide while using their mass as a counter weight, and of course hit them straight away/asap with focus and intent. Doing any kind of training in a traditional striking art usually teaches moving away/around the opponent while while maintaining a stance. Kind of like leaping, but your feet stay partially in contact with the ground, then you sink your weight down when you want to stop/regain a solid stance/footing. If practiced it comes naturally. It's helped me anyway...

I call the technique 'framing,' because I'm using my stopping arm as a frame to create space between myself and the opponent. I've found that the trick with a larger, stronger opponent is to stay light on your feet and stay balanced, let the guy push and carry your weight backwards while maintaining that space. Then look for those brief pauses in his movement to redirect, angle, and counter.

Not trying to be a keyboard badass, but since you used your inside arm for the stop, couldn't Raul use his left arm to clench and cover his jaw at the same time? I mean that arm is begging to get dragged form there back control, suplex or a bunch of things.. The only thing the attacker has do is rotate his hips push the elbow out and grab the back. doesn't seem effective to me. Maybe am wrong, if so tell me what am missing.

A very informative video, as usual Ryan. I have a question for you. Do you guys offer any videos/training for people with physical disabilities? I was in a very bad head-on car accident about 3 years ago, and to make a long story short, I'm not the same man I used to be. From the waist up, I'm still about the same as I was before the accident, and in pretty good shape. From the waist down, not so good. My hips and left leg were crushed, my left leg was torn off at the knee(and reattached), and I've got enough metal holding my hips and leg together to make a boat anchor. The result is very limited agility, and a very slow walk. This makes running from any sort of confrontation impossible. I'm only 51, and I work out every day, just to maintain any progress I make physically. BTW, I'm 6'-7", 300 lbs(need to be about 260, working on it). Thanks again for your videos, they do help.
@Mharriscreations7 жыл бұрын
I think that it should be noted that, though this technique can work and is one of those 'something's better than nothing' techniques, a tackle is something that most everyone can actually do, especially since wrestling and football are taught at the majority of schools (in the USA that is.) That being the case, a simple arm block like this will rarely ever stop the person, but if you use it to deflect their momentum so you can move laterally, it should give you enough time to run away. I think this arm stop should be viewed in a similar way to a check kick. It's not going to stop the person, but it'll slow them down for a split second, and that's all you need.

i have a question, what do you do when that attacker grabs your block arm from the right or grabs from the left and all of a sudden shifts momentum backward pulling you forward. that's what I would do if pushing forward isn't working anymore because I am being stopped. what would you do to counter such a move.
@horstkevin68156 жыл бұрын
Is this a personal preference or does it really matter on which side of your attacker you do the arm stop because i would rather go on his right side.
@ColtonWayan8 жыл бұрын
First off all this isn't an 'Arm Stop.' It's a half SPEAR (Spontaneous Protection Enabling Accelerated Response). And you didn't create it, Tony Blauer did. You demonstrate it with outside 90 and fingers splayed which tells me you understand the importance of activating the extensors. Good work, but give credit where credit is do. Secondly, executing an upper-cut and hook inside trapping range is dangerous and unrealistic. Why not instead maintain tactical contact with the Ulna and simply drive it into the carotid artery. To do so most efficiently you'd want to use the full SPEAR which means you need to get that second hand up. I'll finish by saying this to all of you that commented on this thread. I like Krav-Maga. I respect it. I went to their Los Angeles Headquarters and read their curriculum manual top to bottom. I watched their combat class. Honestly though, the best fighters all had a boxing background. Most of what they 'showcase' online is with agreeable assailants. It's a 'demonstration.' Don't take it literal. People in the hand-to-hand combat community have nicknamed it Krav-McChoreographed for a reason. Remember, everything we do should be based in reality. Keep it real. And, no disrespect, Mr. Hoover.

kind of an outside opinion: even if you don't specifically train Krav, grappling of most types can help, along with even just kick boxing. its another tool on your belt. do something to help give you a leg up on the "average Joe" criminal. many criminals don't train at all. they may have endurance but not the technique. I've found in 5 years of Brazilian Jiu jitsu and Muay Thai, no matter how basic they are, they still open your mind to what you're capable of, to the weaknesses if the body and most of all confidence in your self to at least put up a fight and show that you're not prey to be taken easily.

Hey, Ryan. Great videos. I was in a similar situation to this, but wasn't able to get the arm stop because I was distracted by a second aggressor. My back was against a vehicle, aggressor 1 had his left shoulder into my chest, with his head near my left armpit/shoulder area. His right arm trapped my left arm, and he was swinging for my groin (and missing) with his left arm. In retrospect I suppose I could have turned to the inside and gone right elbow to the left side of his head or even the back of his neck. (Monday morning quarterbacking my own failures is awesome.) However, A) I didn't think about it at the time and B) the confrontation was not serious enough to risk the kind of injury that can cause. In this scenario, where I have failed to maintain the distance, what can you advise to regain that distance, in other words, how the he** do I get him off of me? (I ended up just hooking to the ribs, BTW. It worked, but not well.) Thanks in advance!

Krav Maga is designed to kill people, for self defense in violent and life threatening situations. Its not meant for the ring, though there are a few in the UFC. MrNiceHk As for a good boxer, theyre tough, theyre really tough, but they have quite an issue with the ground game. NEVER go in for a take down to open up a fight, but you want to take him to the ground as quickly as possible, or punish the hell out of those legs, or you're through. Boxing works wonders for standup fighting.

People wouldn't react well when the Krav Maga combatant knocks out his opponent, then jumps the cage running for his life. same reason any real self defense art isnt in the ufc or mma. its not showy. being the best pro fighter isnt about being the best, its about being the most entertaing. this was proven when some of the greats would get boo'ed because they would win too fast. it doesnt look good. also it doesnt always work all that well when two people are agreeing to the fight. these types of art take the perspective that one person is the aggressor and the practitioner is defending and only priority is living.also a lot of the time these guys honestly do train to be a lot more deadly and dangerous than anything you'd see in a sport. there are certain things that aren't allowed in mma because it is too dangerous and too effective and for self defense, thats exactly what you want to know.

What does a 5'3" woman to up against a 6 foot Guy when she doesn't have the muscle build you men do? My cousin and I were mugged when walking and the bad guys pulled across our path with a car and one got out, while we were on a walk on vacation in Florida. We ran. The guy grabbed for me and missed and my cousin threw her purse he ran between us. Thank god he went for the purse and took off back to the car. But my cousin fell and broke her wrist. So if he had stayed this could have ended way worse than it did. Any suggestions for us gals that don't have the strength to fight. I am now old and feel very vulnerable and now don't go out to do things especially alone at night. I have a small pepper spray. But what is that really? I don't really want to do hand to hand combat if I don't have to. But would if the situation required. But worry about it after the mugging, I was robbed at a hotel and had a break in of my storage facility all within a few months of each other. So no have a hard time feeling comfortable out in public. Suggestions please. I do stay off my cell phone and pay attention to my surrounds and check other cars parked around mine, before approaching mine. But I am always on edge.

@danielbrown13538 жыл бұрын
Sarah Branson These are just some suggestions, that will hopefully help. Continue being aware of your surroundings, as the more you are able to notice, the more time you will have to consider/employ any options (duck inside a store, move to a more populated area, make a phone call, flag a cab, cross the street, sit in a restaurant or cafe until the coast is clear, etc.) Try to find a style, school or instructor that has some real world experience. An art or style of self defense that caters to your body type and situation, combined with someone competent, who gives a damn, can really help. You have to do your research, although most first classes are either free, or at a reduced cost, so you can see what you're getting into. If you do HAVE TO get physical, go all in, and get out of Dodge! Strike with intent and focus, instead of flailing and hoping you hit and hurt them. And then GO! Get in your car and drive, run away (or walk away quickly), call the cops, get to where you can get some assistance. Hope this helps.

That was a good video(most of the sd videos out there are terrible). I like the hockey type punching. For one of the greatest RickRypien rip. A welterweight who made heavy weight pro nhL players turn tail. The arm trap was a nice touch. I'd likely go to a sweep or soccer kick then and if he turned the whizzer to a easy sweep like a kenjit.

After you're outside your attacker's elbows and behind your attacker, go ahead and use your foot to kick / push him away if you plan to make an escape

A strong enough force from a big guy ramming into him would bulldoze his forearm block so those punches better come in bunches while he's trying hard to evade.

Left arm block to the shoulder with a right arm for arm smash to the face would work much better.

A real fight is over in seconds. You take what you have and do what you can to make the threat go away. Dojo-stuff don't mean shit on the outside. Sometimes it's just a question of rolling into a ball and protect the head.

I know life is full of what ifs. And im not trying to be argumentative. Looks to me like Raul is in a perfect position to be punching you in the head. Left hand upper cuts and hooks to the head and right hooks to the rib cage and head. He has both hands free. I see other moves leading to arm locks and front choke holds. Not trying to troll. My minds wheels start turning when i watch these videos.

Agreed. And I'm not saying thiss guy sucks. (Cause in a situation with a street fighter he would win) but In that position all Raul has to do is hook his had and twist away and he would lose balance and fall down.

***** If Raul has spent most of his adult life in prison, chances are he's a VERY experienced fighter, and experienced in the most practical type of street fighting.

Would like to here you thinking on hitting with a closed fist. In my experience a broken digit ends the fight in the other guys favor.
