About Us.
Byther Farm is a small organic homestead, being designed and managed using permaculture practices. We aim for self-sufficiency in fruit and vegetables for increased self reliance and better resilience to the modern world. I recognise that we are unlikely to be truly self sufficient, but do the best we can. I share our home with my loving husband, Mr J and our cat, Monty.
We are a fifty-something couple who live on a smallholding in Carmarthenshire, Wales. We are going green and creating a gentler, cleaner and more healthy life for our family.
Having had a highly successful smallholding in Monmouthshire, we hope to recreate the abundance at our new home. There will be a large organic kitchen garden with no dig gardening raised beds and young food forest in which to grown our fruit and vegetables.
We keep a few sheep and Aylesbury ducks.

I do the same way. I get into my zone either watch my favorite shows, KZbin videos or music and I plant & do my thing. It's therapeutic for me. My true happy place ☺️🌱

I don't like plastic but it's become a necessity. Labels I make from coffee stir sticks, cheaper than plastic. Drawback is the writing can fade or spread into something unreadable. To avoid this, I have moved to a soft lead pencil. My seedlings this year will get vermiculture extract for fertilizer, again cheaper because I have a "worm farm". The only seeds in are lettuce and one variety of tomatoes that's medium sized fruits, heart shaped. Never grown those before.

Great video and really useful. I agree with a previous post - lots of advice on seed packets how to germinate but lacking information on how to continue to grow before you are able to plant outside.

I use plastic milk cartons cut into strips for making labels, then use a permanent marker.

How big should they be before planting out ?

Aren't there some plants that don't like to have their roots disturbed? I can see gently lifting them out of the flat cell and moving them to a larger container but pulling them by the leaves apart if they started out close to each other and then planting them in larger containers seems like very rough handling. Which are the plants that can endure/tolerate it and which are the ones that can not?

Plants like peas and beans aren't wild about root disturbance and root veg will usually end up curled and wonky if you transplant them.

Hi Liz, Thank you for a great video. My problem I find is trying to get information on how to grow plnts on after pricking out and before proper planting. For example I have grown coleus and the seed packet tells me how to germinate at what temperature etc, but doesn't say what temperature i need to grow them on at until I can plant them out. Do I grow on in warmth or just in a cold greenhouse/cold frame? I also have the same issue with celery. I have just pricked them out today, but i now have no idea where i should grow them on and at what temperature etc. I am ok with things i've always grown but I have never graown these plants before and am trying to expand my growing experience. Happy gardening 😃 x
