I have watched every video you have done about hip replacements. I am now 2 months POST surgery, and doing GREAT and STILL watch your videos. My 1 surprise during the surgery was the pain I experienced after the anesthetic was gone and I was in the ward. I think the amount of pain I should have expected was described as much less that I DID have. So I was surprised. Probably it was normal, because I am 74 and everything takes longer for me now. But I am now walking around with no walker, no cane, and no PAIN. Thank you soooo much for doing these videos.

Hi 🇬🇧💕 I am now at the 7 week stage. I am pretty much back to normal. 🤣 I am walking totally unaided. No limp or any issues. I have driven the car today for the first time with no problems. This has made me so happy. I’m still in the crucial stage so no bending, still using some occupational therapy equipment and being pretty careful. I cannot believe how well it’s gone. Im 29 and have osteoarthritis in my right hip along with damage from an old hip surgery where the surgeons did not practice correctly and left me with many issues. I deal with extreme daily pain to where i cannot work or live my life normally and basically tied to my bed. I start with injections this month but my surgeon and I are realistically preparing for total hip replacement in the next few months. I cannot tell you how much your videos on hip replacement surgeries has helped me to be better informed/educated for me to ask better questions and overall help reduce my anxiety. My right total hip placement was Wednesday, October 12. Home the next day. I’m 74. Walking is still painful, but slowly getting better. The nights are awful. My husband has to pull me out of the bed, help me back in, and suffer through sleeping on my back. But I lived through it, and I’ll be well soon! When the surgeon entered the waiting room to speak to my hard-of-hearing husband, he said, “You’re getting a new girl!” Husband thought he said,”It’s a girl!” My poor husband almost fainted!

Hey docs! I’ve been watching you guys for a couple months now. Like a lot of people I’m also a hip replacement patient/candidate. I had my first (left side-lateral) done Dec 2. I’m due for my right side in a week on Feb 2. Exactly 2 months after. Both hips are completely trashed. My surgeon says they look like square pegs jammed into round holes. You’re videos have helped calm me down and take away most anxiety I have. My first surgery is a resounding success. I can’t wait for this next one. It’s been over a year since I’ve walked pain free. Keep up your great bedside manner and humor guys. Anyone would be lucky to have you as their surgeon!

Thank you for this video. It is 6 years old so I think the length of stay at the hospital has now been reduced. I personally am hoping to go home the same day. My one complication pre surgery is that I want to talk to another surgeon than the one I am scheduled with. I don't feel like I have good repoire with his team. I am experiencing sleep deprivation from the hip pain and anxiety. They don't seem to care. That has me worried about how much they will care post operation. Wish me luck. This is a big deal to me and I want to feel comfortable with both the surgeon and his staff - who will see me after surgery.

But I'm sooo very happy to report after a 3 hour surgery due to extensive damage all went well and thanks to your physical therapy videos recovery has been so much better and I'm so happy I went through with it. I have had severe pain in my groin for the past three years and have just recently found out I need a hip replacement due to the bone on bone in my left hip. I have been looking at what type of hip to get and it looks like a XLPE. Ceramic ball with Titanium socket. As a former Triathlete and Soccer player, I look forward to being pain free and being able to exercise again. If there was one question I should ask my doctor prior the surgery, what would that be?

Hi Again! Ive been advised by an interventional pain specialist to get on a waiting list (+/- 3 months), but I am not in a lot of pain - more like less flexibility and some sharp-ish pain when moving certain ways. Ive had both knees done and suffered for many years prior to eaxh one. Turning 65 this year, I no longer feel I can just push thru till its bad, as I want more quality time before Im put out to pasture so to speak. Is sooner-than-later a good idea for a hip - get it done before oain does become an issue? I don’t want to suffer for weeks or months, but also don’t want to add the long process of a major surgery unless it’s necessary. I will email this in a xouole of days, but putting it out here in the meantime while Inhave a second. Thanks for these videos and hope you are both doing well! - Bob in Central Virginia

Thanks for the comment Bob. Typically hip replacement is an operation to reduce pain first and improve range of motion second. It is a very personal choice when to do it. You need to decide how negatively it is affecting your daily life. Best of luck

The one thing I noticed is that you reply to your comments. That's amazing. I'm 58 and needed a Hip replacement for 2 years now. Bone on bone with spurs. Progressed to walking with a cane now. I'm at a BMI of 44 and cant seem to loose the weight. I'm eating clean and trying to do what I can to exercise,. They wont do the hip unless I get to 40 BMI. I understand why they say that but I really need it done. It's really ruining my life. I'm in Maryland. Would you consider doing my hip?

We encourage our patients to do their best to get to a healthy weight but do not specifically deny surgery based on a specific BMI unless our anesthesia department says it is unsafe. Hi, I've been watching your surgery you KZbin for a few months, thank you for your great info! I started looking into hip surgery 2 years ago, then one surgeon pointed out that I had osteoporosis just by looking at my xrays. Then he referred me to another surgeon... The next surgeon I then spoke to said even though I had osteoporosis, the surgery could still be done. Still another surgeon said to work on strengthening my bones and come back in a year and a half. I started taking bone supplements, but the standard bone strengthening drugs seemed to have too many side effects, so i have avoided taking them I'm in a lot of pain now and I get around on a cane to my two jobs. At the end of my shifts, I'm in a lot of pain and can barely get back into the seat of my car to drive home. so, my questions are two: 1) Is it really possible to have a successful hip replacement surgery when I have osteoporosis? 2) I've been advised to get a ceramic ball joint cup because it's better and less toxic than the plastic, what do you think? If you use ceramic, what are your best brands? Thank you!

Hi Mer. So yes many patients have osteoporosis and do just fine. As for ceramic years ago it was certainly far superior to metal on plastic bearing surfaces. I have never heard you say what kind if walker you have your patients use. I have used a rollTor fir about 9 years and now my surgeon awaits me to use a 2 wheel small walker with skids on the back legs. I am very upset over this. I was also told by a orthopedic nurse who did a phone visit with me today that I was expected to use one of these pieces of junk in my home after my surgery instead of my rollator because the doctor decided it was safer than a rollator. I have only used a rollTor except for when I use my late husbands one hand walker to go from my recliner to the front door. It is easier than my cane at this time. Have you done or can you do podcast on different walkers for your followers?

I've had three surgeries in the past 14 months. Left shoulder cleanup, left foot bone spur removal and a repair of a stress fracture in the femoral neck. Due to severe arthitis pain in the hip I am cheduled for right hip replacement (anterior) on July 14th. First the doctor has to take out the three screws that were inserted in February (I wish they had done the hip replacement then!). This video strengthened my desire to get this started so I can get it DONE! Thank you for all the great information.

Removing the screws in the femoral neck that were put in Feb 14th added another incision to heal, increased swelling of the thigh and pain at the end of the day from walking. Getting a little better each day but I'm sure if I didn't have the addition of the screw removal, I would be doing much better. Thank you

Hi I’m in the UK 🇬🇧💕 I had a THR 1 week ago was discharged after 48 hours. I have 11 layers of stitches in my leg due to having little to no muscle. It’s been AGONY. I am on high medication plus liquid morphine for nights. I have been moving around a little using a Walker and have my husband & Mum looking after me. It’s been really really painful. (And the other needs doing as well). Aarrrrgh 😰 Please tell me the pain will get better. 😩🙏 xx 🇬🇧

Having gone through one hip replacement, the hardest thing is getting through the therapy for the next 6 to 8 weeks. I had to have extended therapy, but it all turned out good in the end. The pain level is very tolerable, but the mobility takes the most time to get back. That is, getting off of the walker and cane. Looks like I will need a new hip on the other side now, so it is good to know what to expect.

It’s not pleasurable it’s not fun and stay in the hospital as long as you can because once you come home you’re on your own in fact it’s quite miserable for the first week if someone doesn’t teach you how do use a strap under that leg to get into bed they are crazy use of anything a belt something long enough that can fit under your foot and they can help support that leg when you are trying to get into bed they didn’t mention that it’s pretty darn important

I've had both sides done posterior method 4 weeks apart, the second one being done 3 weeks ago. For some reason I was not put to sleep for the second op. I heard the doctors talking, felt them moving me around, heard the saw cutting the bone and the hammering as the prosthetic was being inserted but no pain at all though thanks to the spinal injection. Question: How long must I observe the precautions for?

I have lupus and badly broke my femur 14 months ago probably because of the steriods I've been on for so long and a rod was put in , then 4 months later because of the lupus developed a bad infection and had 2 wash outs. Then 6 months after that it still hadn't knitted and unfortunately the rod broke and when they went in they said the bone was diseased and had to put a spacer in to make sure there was no more risk of infection. Then they said I'd have the total hip replacement a month after which was just after this Christmas but i am still waiting and 2 and a half months ago my spacer broke and no one from orthopaedics came down to see me when i was in A&E despite the X ray showing a back brake of the spacer joint and just sent a message saying it was none urgent so for 2 and a half months I've been in agonising pain, can't move much cuz I'm in so much pain on crutches with a torn rotator cuff and an impingement in my shoulder( surgery for this has now been put off till they finally get around to doing my hip) and I'm in despair! Have to see the consultant monday and need them to finally do something cuz i don't know how much more damage this has done? I am a 40yr old female and in the uk which is why they have been so totally negligent in my care(nhs). Really hope this nightmare is over soon and i can just get back to walking my own dogs again but this is looking increasingly unlikely! Your videos are great btw, wish i lived in the usa/canada n this would've been sorted a long time ago.

Hi Sara. Thanks for sharing your story which sounds like a very difficult and painful journey thus far. Yes your fracture could be related to your lupus and the associated treatment. It does weaken the bones. The infection is likely the reason the fracture did not heal so your surgeons are trying to cure the infection first and then treat the fracture which is what has to be done. It is ok that the spacer broke, it happens, but it may be painful. The antibiotics in the spacer are still eluting out to cure the infection. What will likely happen is that they will schedule to remove the spacer and test for infection at that time. If it is still infected you typically cannot place any new hardware so another antibiotic spacer would be inserted. If the infection is clear, they would proceed to fix the fracture possibly with a total hip replacement depending on the fracture location. Hopefully this helps and good luck with your consultation. @@TalkingWithDocs Yes it is a total hip replacement i am waiting for because they had to remove my diseased hip and top of my femur so that is why i had a spacer fixed and which unfortunately has broken. They checked for infection early January and thankfully found i was infection free and was supposed to operate a few weeks aftet but this has now turned into months with no operation date insight so hoping my surgeon gives me some good news tomorrow cuz i can't carry on like this much longer and my life has been put on hold for almost 18 months cuz obviously now the spacer has broken i can't get around more than a few feet and am spending my life staring at 4 walls. I thought having lupus was hard but the complications it brings are never ending! Thank you so much for taking the time to reply and i will let you know how i get on tomorrow.

I had hip replacement surgery one week ago today. As far as pain goes I did not have pain what I felt 2 days after is soreness a little achy. My pain medication that I took was tylenol extra strength. Now that I'm home, released on the 3rd day after surgery, I take tylenol as needed. I'm still amazed! Doing Physical therapy at home visits and feeling improving every day.

Why mosty explanation here are total hip replacement because im searching about neck femur post op in you tube not much explanation regarding this. Even the testimony of patient neck femur post op very rare to find. Im worried.

Boy - 10 years ago,I had to attend a class with about 15 other people and a nurse was showing a slideshow about what to expect . LOL The worse was waking up ,looking like a mummy with my feet bound to a triangle pillow . Whenever the nurse would come around and ask me if I wanted morphine -- I'd say "Oh-- you bet I do !" :)

Hi Daniel. We tell our total hip patients that they should give up jogging or running due to the increased wear on the implant. Better activities include elliptical, walking, or swimming. Hope that helps. The trouble is that runners like to run. Thanks for watching

Hi Therese. Good luck with your upcoming procedure! Not everyone requires opioids however they are often a part of the post operative pain plan. You should discuss this with your surgeon and your anesthetist. Often treatment is multimodal and would include Tylenol and some type of anti-inflammatory depending on the blood thinner you are using. Hope that helps.

Therese, I had my hip replacement 2 months ago. The ONLY pain medication I needed was simply TYLENOL. I also did not want any opioids or anything that could be addictive. I was lucky, I just didnt need anything else. I see your comment was 8 months ago, so I hope you are doing fine by now. I am after 2 months.

Does the reason the hip needs to be replaced determine how well one recovers? I ask because I have avascular necrosis and had my right hip replaced a week ago and am not progressing as quickly as I thought I would, or had hoped. I am having my left replaced once the right is recovered well enough.

Hi Scott. Sorry for the delayed response. So sometimes the cause is related to recovery but typically AVN patients do as well as arthritic patients however some younger patients do have more difficulty for whatever reason. Also sometimes AVN patients have not suffered as long with the pain so their relative improvement seems to be less. Hope that helps and that you are well on your road to recovery. Just got right thr and my butt is too sore to really get off the bed. But once I'm up I can walk. I know I need to walk more but I think it's the wound pump in my butt cheek. But I'm really sore 😕 but I wanna walk. Just wanna start the walking process. But I'm still happy I got it. It's true it is the incision and surgical area.

Hi Paul. Some surgeons will do both hips at the same time. It sometimes means that you will have more pain in the short term but it saves the need for two admissions and two operations. Hope that helps

How do I know when or if I need hip surgery? I have moderate to severe on my right hip and moderate on my left hip. Have been having pain with my legs for several years and much difficulty standing up for a long period of time and cannot kneel down because I get to much painful pressure on my legs. What is your opinion on this

Topic: does osteoarthritis in hip, which is causing the grinding in the ball & socket, make me dizzy? There is definitely an affect on my head - dizziness when I walk. I'm hobbling, dipping into the side of the displaced/damaged hip. But why the dizziness? For me, it is akin to the nausea I feel during a bone fracture but not quite as bad. If a bone fracture affects my head then does the severe osteoarthritis in hip work the same way? thanks

After my hip replacement I end up staying in hospital over two weeks, most of it in rehab part of hospital. I had hip dysplasia and also my apt is 30 stairs to my apartment. So they wanted to make sure I could climb the stairs. It was a long two and half weeks of my life. Being away from my kids and family. I missed my cat. Lol. I did make friends there at the rehab that I now keep in touch.

My name is Amber Cooper and I have a sister with bilateral hip dysplasia since she was one years old. She has had about 9+ surgeries on each hip and none of them helped her. Because of the dysplasia, she also suffers from osteoarthritis and the beginnings of osteoporosis. From all the surgeries she has had at a very young age, and because all of her surgeries ended up failing with complications like necrosis and more pain, she has a lot of PTSD and is afraid of more surgeries. Our family has tried every alternative method to alleviate her pain, from stem cell work to corticosteroids and nothing has helped. I've started researching a simultaneous bilateral hip surgery, in order to possibly minimize the number of surgeries and hopefully get her pain free faster. Her fear of doctors and surgeries makes it to where she doesn't want to think about it, but I honestly think it's the best option for her at this point. Furthermore, some doctors have said she's too young for a surgery (she's 22), but I have researched and found kids as young as 18 that have the same surgeries. If you could give me any advice on how to bring up this issue, more about how it works, and where would it be best for her to go for a potential surgery, I would greatly appreciate it. I would also like to know if the scar tissue from all of her previous surgeries will impact a replacement or not. She has been in extreme chronic pain for all of her life, and on top of that some doctors have told her she was faking her condition, so her distrust is salient. She has given up hope of ever not being in pain, and I would really like to give her some hope that she can have a future and she doesn't have to give up on her dreams because of her pain. If you could help in any way, you would be giving someone a life that she never thought was possible. Thank you for your time and consideration and I look forward to hearing back from you both.

Hi Amber. Thanks for sharing your sister's story and being an advocate for her. So the bottom line for a patient like her is that surgery can help. It is more difficult than the average hip replacement for many reasons including the scar tissue which you asked about. You should ask to be referred to a surgeon who specializes in revision hip surgery and difficult total hip replacements. These types of surgeons often practice in tertiary care centers (universities) but not exclusively. Age is obviously an issue however this type of patient often requires hip replacement at a very young age. There is definitely hope for your sister you just need to find the right surgeon. Hi Rene. This is an important discussion to have with your surgeon and anesthetist. You can certainly be sedated and if for whatever reason you still do not want a spinal, you can always have a general anesthetic. Nearly everyone gets a spinal and it typically goes very well - obviously not without risk but risks are quite low. Hope that helps.

Hi Laura. Yes there is post op pain for sure. The pain usually shifts from the groin and thigh preop to the lateral aspect and thigh postop. It will get better with time. Hang in there.
