Very good, some stalwart advice there....german ww2 helmets are a sticking point for me...ive read a few books and done some research and whilst i dont consider myself a new collector i would be concerned spending the amount needed to get one at a fair and i agree with your sentiments about 'some' dealers. I will have to revisit my downloaded books on the subject as im unsure of the ones i have...im not good with ebooks...prefer paper, i will also visit the websites you mentioned....thanks again and cheers 😊

Regarding helmet preservation, don't forget to keep the helmet out of direct sunlight. It will fade the paint, decal, and deteriorate the leather chinstrap.

Forgot to add it is the only one I have ever had like it. The other I have left around ten are all original except a couple I suspect are repaints. I've had a lot of nice ones in my time Back in the day army luft SS Kregsmarine as the old saying goes I don't regret what I bought but what I sold.

The big problem is, while you're off doing the research, you've decided that it's real and go back to buy it, and someone comes along and bought it while you were doing research. It would be better to learn exactly what to look for so that you can spot a genuine helmet from a reproduction, and spot post-war tampering with real helmets. I never discount gut feelings about things.

Hi thanks for your comment, I understand what you are saying, but this video is aimed at new collectors not experienced collector like yourself, I was just trying to tell new collectors not to rush into a purchase, and do as much research as possible before parting with that hard earned cash.

Would like your opinion on a old m40 I have. It is real close to the color your m35 in this video it's marked ET 64 has a lot no in the back along with a unreadable German type name and probably a field post no in white paint that someone has tried to smear out. Now it has the classic tiny holes just below the vent hole drilled through the army decal wing for the Finnish liner. It has an original German liner put back in it band is marked 1940. From watching your video it helped me to determine it is definitely a replacement liner. I am thinking it is one Finland got after or during the war fitted it out and may not have ever been used. Someone got it and put it back with the German liner. It does have the ET type original decal its a shame about the small hole in it. But it is what it is but anyway I only have a hundred dollars in it.

I will be going to a motary faire but I don’t feel confident of spending thousands on the helmet that I am not sure are real. Any suggestions ?

Lovely video with some good advice. Personally, I would never buy any of these as untouched originals, because so few are............unless uncle Olaf in Eidfjord digs one out of his cupboard! Chinstraps , buckles, bales, liner bands, pins,, leather liners, paints, and particularly, decals, have all been widely reproduced and some are scarily accurate copies. Before these items became widely available, you could readily obtain a genuine stahlhelm " bell " , the metal shell, for a small sum, and I think many of these have been "restored" and found their way onto the collectors' market. I did a couple of dozen myself , not to deceive, but for reenactment purposes, long ago . KZbin now has many tutorial videos on ageing and distressing a "factory " finish for reenactment purposes. Caveat , emptor ! Study German Helmet Vault, and German Helmet Walhalla , but it's far too easy to get burned.

In original WW2 German helmet sizes, you would need a size 68 shell with a size 61 liner in it. Hope this is of help 👍👍
