I’ve dropped seed of about 60 crops in the last week. Heading out to drop herb and flower seeds for late summer. I’m zone 4b and trying to maximize my garden. I’m going to start more cukes and summer squash tomorrow to pop in as space opens-thanks for the reminder!

I do a hybrid approach. I have basic grow lights in my garage but as soon as they germinate, I put them outside in the AM and bring them indoors in the PM and supplement with a few additional hours of artificial light. That way I don’t have to harden them off when I decide to play them out but they also get a ton of light to grow as seedlings.

I love this episode! It's so encouraging! I'm actually quite surprised with the results from the experiment. Were the indoor ones on heat mats? or just at ambient house temp? I would have assumed the outdoor ones would grow faster!
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 3 жыл бұрын
It was a fun experiment, Marie! No heat mat, as the house is plenty warm this time of year. Minimal variations of temp indoors, no elements or pests to worry about indoors, but you have to add an extra week or so for hardening off. Pros and cons of each!

I had the same problem with grey squirrels and with some serious groundhogs. But the attack stopped once I hung bars of irish spring soap thru out the garden and threw shreds of it around the border. They do not like it. The squirrels and ground hogs left everything alone.Worth a try.

Ground squirrels are an issue for us too, we live in a rural wooded area. This year we put up stakes and hoops to support shade cloth over our raised beds, and then hung bird netting from the shade cloth to the ground so the squirrels can’t get into the beds. They stole a few green tomatoes in the beginning, but we secured the gaps so they couldn’t squeeze through and it’s working great so far!

Thanks for the video! I just started more cucumbers but wasn't feeling confident so now I'm going to go crazy and sow more seeds 😄 Did you know that if you leave the old roots they'll decompose and the new roots from the new transplant will actually grow stronger as they take up the space created by the previous plant. Hi Michelle - so glad the video helped you feel more confident in planting new cukes - appreciate the feedback and the tips on roots. @CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Dominique - it's perfectly normal for the soil to settle over time - in fact I address this in my new book coming out in the spring. ("The First-Time Gardener: Raised Bed Gardening: All the know-how you need to build and grow a raised bed garden amzn.to/3xId4hR). You'll want to top your beds off each time you plant with compost or fresh potting mix so your plants have what they need to thrive. Similar to what I did here with the Tiny Tim tomato. Leave a few inches at the top for mulch and you are good to go! Thanks for watching!

Is it really enough just to add worm casting to used up soil?
@zaria5785
@zaria5785 3 жыл бұрын
Depends on how packed with plants your container or garden beds are. I always like to amend with a natural granular fertilizer (5-5-5) and worm castings and regular compost. Then top dress the plants with mulch or what is sold at garden centers as “garden soil” (not the same as potting mix or potting soil).
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 3 жыл бұрын
Hello H.P.B. - There are so many ways to do things in the garden, that's what makes in interesting! It depends on how depleted your soil is - the containers I planted the beans and cukes in have been well fertilized. Worm castings will feed the plants over the next few months, and the water soluble fertilizer feeds them immediately You can add additional potting mix if you like, as I showed with the Tiny Tim. Thanks for watching!

This was my first year starting anything from seed this spring (tomatoes). I never thought about starting crops from seed outside of direct sowing after the early spring. Next year I will plant seeds on my deck to have at the ready this time next year so that I don’t have to rely on garden center plants (not that that’s a bad thing). I live in zone 6 and our growing season can be rather short (last year we had snow Labor Day weekend and a mid teens for several days in late April this spring). But I just got word that they will be painting our townhomes this week and I have to move everything off my decks. 😔 Will any of these grow indoors now or should I just pull everything and keep the soil in the pots? I also still have very green Tiny Tims that are full of tomatoes. I harvest some every day. Will they survive inside near a big window? It will be for 4 weeks. Thanks for any advice.
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Teri - awesome that you got new seeds started - no don't pull them! If you have a south facing window with 8 ish hours of sun , they'll do OK inside, but often windows don't give enough direct overhead light, and the seedlings get leggy. I'd highly recommend some easy grow lights to help your plants during the 4 weeks painting time, then put them outside where they'll really take off and you can harvest. Here's a vid that will help, bit.ly/CaliKim4EasyGrowLightSetUpsForStartingSeedsIndoors. How do you eat scallop squash?
@CaliKim29

We love it sliced on the grill (brush with a little olive oil, chopped fresh herbs, salt and pepper), or chopped/sliced and roasted in the oven. Eat it similar to how you'd eat zucchini. Enjoy!

Best thing I did this year was build a light table for seedlings. Loved the comparison here. Would not have predicted the outcome. You said 'need pulled out.' Are you originally from Western PA?

@@CaliKim29I've long thought that verb usage a la 'need pulled out' instead of 'need pulling out' or 'need to be pulled out' was a western PA thing. My source for that was eastern PA kids at university making fun of my dialect, so take it with a grain of salt, I guess.

Sugar Babies take about 90 days from seed to harvest and love full sun (6+ hours a day), temps 70-90 F. If you have this much time left of warm weather in GA, you are good to go to start from seed. Otherwise you might want to pick up a transplant at the garden center to save you some time! Have fun!

@@CaliKim29 Hi Kim, Thanks for your reply. A few more questions if you don't mind: Would you recommend to grow lavender in a smart pot? And if so which size of the pot do you recommend? I am in zone 7 having a hard time to grow lavender and so I'm thinking of trying it out in a pot that I can move it into the house over winter, and I'd like a light, airy pot that's easier to move around. If you have a video about how to grow lavender I would love to watch. Thanks very much!

That's a wide open question. But, as hot it is there, you might have a short growing season in the fall. Do a little research on what and when to grow in Las Vegas.
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Rana, yes you can plant these quick growing veggies in just about any area right now. Vegas is super hot, you'll want to use shade cloth to protect your veggies when it's over 90 ish degrees, which I bet is just about every day in the summer. Here's a video that will help with hot weather gardening, bit.ly/CaliKimGardenHeatWaveSurvival. Thanks for stopping by!

It's been 103 to 111F here, and my tomatoes aren't ripening, they just get soft after hanging green for weeks. I'm getting okra, under safe cloth and my long neck squash is trying. (I got a late start. If it weren't in pots so I can pull it into the shade during the hottest parts of the day, I don't think it would make. My tomato plant is still healthy, as it's very big and I'm hoping for good tomatoes when the weather finally cools into the 90s.

Hi Sylvia, Peas are a cool weather veggie and thrive when the temps are 75 F and below. They'll even take light frosts! For best results, plant when the temps are favorable in your area. For a detailed description of cool and warm weather veggies, pick up a copy of my book "Organic Gardening for Everyone: Homegrown Vegetables Made Easy", calikimgardenandhome.com/books/organic-gardening-for-everyone/.
