I’m exactly the same as you. I used to wear nice suits each working day plus the occasional black tie event. When I retired, so did my smart clothes. When I was working, I longed for the time when I didn’t have to wear suit and tie each day; now, I wish I could wear them some days. I have bought a few nice sports jackets and so, I do become the smartest guy when shopping in the supermarket

I'm made aware of what is stylish (while having not a singular sense of it myself) and the craftsmanship that goes into producing the final product. Fantastic.

Kirby, I was an avid cigar enthusiast for most of my life, but after trying pipes out for a week, I didn’t look back. I’ve got a nice cabinet of cigars aging now but love pipes so much, it’s a side business now. It’s cheaper and the non-aromatic tobacco has such a range. I know you’ve done a video or maybe 2 in the past, but I think it fits well with your channel and videos. I think delving into a nice tobacco pipe and exploring a Virginia base, an English blend, a Burley based and Aromatics would be very interesting. It’s an acquired taste like all these are but it is so relaxing and pleasurable.
@aaronholmes85683 жыл бұрын
Pipes always reminded me of my grandfather, who would sit on a Sunday afternoon listening to the radio and smoking his Condor ready rubbed. The smell reminds me of sitting relaxing with him whilst he puffed contentedly, speaking softly over the radio about articles in the Sunday papers. I remember the scent of Brylcreem too in his hair, and Old Spice. Over 30 years later I took the step to buy my own pipe and tobacco, and the smells of my childhood came flooding back.

Kirby I met you in Royal Arcade while you were filming. We share the same tailor John Kent. My only comments are that black barathea is preferable to satin for evening bow ties and grosgrain is preferable to satin for the shawl collar of the jacket. I had the collar and also the sleeve cuffs above the piping of my Turnbull and Asser jacket - in the same colour as yours - converted to black grosgrain by Henry Poole.

What a great smoking jacket, Kirby! Interestingly enough, in the Netherlands a smoking jacket was traditionally worn on top of the dinner jacket. This is why it should be cut slighty larger than your regular (dinner) jacket. Funny to see how these traditions are similar, but not the same in our two cultures.

Since I was young, my mother taught me (without meaning to) that dressing well adds to the splendor of a special occasion, always ensuring my brother and I were properly turned out. The smoking jacket is beautiful, love the lapis studs for the shirt. Question: How do you prefer to manage your socks such they stay up and don’t fall to your ankles? My legs are slender, and it’s a challenge for me personally. Thank for the great vids, once again!

Respectfully IMHO bottle green leans to the 'dandy' and perhaps should be reserved for one's intimate home( Chateau) or 'Palazzo' not the dust-bowl of Texas! That being said it is striking in a Cifonelli sort of way but remember your admonitions concerning the rules of black tie: 'beware a 'splash' of color.......' Without prejudice!

Traditionally the cumberbun pleats go up, but that's not a hard and fast rule. In the military, specifically the US Army directs that the pleats face downward. Reference DA PAM 670-1 Pg. 129. (2) Description. The cummerbund is black, made of a commercial design, in silk or satin material with four or five pleats running the entire length of the cummerbund. (3) How worn. The cummerbund is worn with the pleats facing down. Female Soldiers wear the black cummerbund with the blue and white mess and evening mess uniforms. Male Soldiers wear it with the white and blue mess uniforms. The male bow tie and cummerbund must be made of the same material.

Hey Kirby do you think there is room for innovation in the "occasion" side of suiting? For example, a fancy evening event may demand a tuxedo A fancy British event may demand a top hat A fancy smoking event may demand a smoking suit etc But what about a specific outfit to be worn in say... visiting a coffee shop? Or being on a plane? There is attire to be worn on a boat.. but what do you wear on a plane? It's a crackpot idea I'm sure but imagine the possibilities! You can wear your lounge suit when you wake up, then you put on your stroller suit to walk to the airport, then you put on your airplane suit to sit on the plane, and finally you put on your dinner suit to have dinner
@sunhuizart38213 жыл бұрын
To expand on this in a more serious tone... Without the tuxedo... a fancy evening event... is just an evening event. In the past people wore a special outfit for just about everything... and everything became a fancy event. Today nobody thinks anything of walking through the park, or eating at a restaurant. A special outfit for the occasion expresses not just to others.. but to yourself as well that the occasion is special and worth appreciating. I think we could all gain alot by turning everyday things into special occasions by having more thought and tradition in the clothing we wear.
@timcorrell98633 жыл бұрын
Smoking jackets and robes are actually making a comeback back thanks to the legalization of cannabis. In countries other than America where cannabis is being legalized, it’s being done so on a federal level for 21 and over. Legalization of cannabis on a provincial (in this case, state) level only is strictly an American thing. I don’t know if it was legalized in Kirby’s home state of Texas, yet.
@peppersantiago79952 жыл бұрын
Actually, Mr. Wizard, your idea is not crackpot by any stretch of the imagination. What you just described is the mindset of the American pre-gilded age and gilded age. The gilded age actually is responsible for the continuation of European aristocracy and Spanish royalty practices and proper dress. At this time men and women would change clothes a minimum of four times a day to suit very specific moments in the days schedule. Before a person, male or female, would arrive for breakfast fully dressed in morning clothing, they would typically get into a morning dressing gown to cover one's very ornate pajamas which were usually adorned with a monogram of some kind. After morning dress, men would wear daytime dress, and, then just for afternoon tea, more commonly referred to high tea. After it said hi tea, the afternoon would continue and then one would return to their home or hotel room to dress for dinner. These days, athleisure has become the order of the day. Whilst Mr. Allison's videos educate us on "the finer things in life" the events that would allow us to wear such clothing as is espoused are so few and far between that they fall into the echelon of the 1%. We do absolutely find Mr Allison's presentations brilliant, however unrealistic they are for the every man.

As sharp as the green velvet smoking jacket may be, one does not wear a smoking jacket to dinner. Full stop. Unless one is the host of the gathering, and it is in one's own home. In that case, of course, one's guests do not wear anything approaching a smoking jacket. Why? Because they are guests. (Though, I suppose, Alan Flusser might show up wearing a pilled cardigan and neckerchief paired with track pants. In which case, all bets are off... while everyone fawns over him.)

I love a smoking jacket, but sadly have no honest use for one. Unless they legalise weed as I'm sure many gentleman were smoking, then maybe I'd get one. It would defintely have to be green. Green is super under-rated, and no it's not because its the same colour as the plant.
