I would say two things about gear. I live in an area where the water is average 50 degrees F. That means if you fall overboard, you can get hypothermia in about 30 minutes. People swim in just regular clothes, and i can too. It really depends on your local knowledge and experience in colder water. Also, wearing tight-ish clothes will act as a wetsuit to a certain extent, and keep you warm. Gloves are an essential part for me. I dont care about my hands, but for grip they are amazing. You just need to test stuff, and be safe.

For myself, in anything above around 15 kts of wind I wear a helmet. My son has flung me around the kite of our Spitfire at 20 kts and I've landed more than a mast length from the boat. For all my years of motor bike riding, sailing, mountain biking and road cycling, I have only needed my helmet once - sailing an RS800 - mast hit me very hard on the head after a rather spectacular capsize. BTW I also broke a rib in the that capsize.

Yes, I failed to mention the helmet in this video - I made a subsequent one on safety that included it. I only started wearing a helmet last year and I'm into it.

Nice video. I always wear gloves. They don’t call me office hands Dave for nothing. I use gatorback brand model 634 electricians gloves made of goatskin. Electrician gloves leave the first two fingers and the thumb open. Goatskin gloves are tough and they stay soft even after getting wet and drying out. Maybe something about helmets as well. Nice for gopro mounting and in the big wind when solo. Love your work. Keep the info flowing.

Not being a glove wearer, I didn't feel qualified to comment on gloves, I think it's good to leave somethings up to the community!

Excellent video as usual ! As mentioned below...gloves is a plus...and sunglasses are mandatory ...and in extreme cold or hot conditions something to cover your head and keep it warm or to provide a bit of shade

Yeah for sure. I stopped wearing glasses on the water but probably a good idea for protection.

Extra items to keep in your pocket: Whistle, mirror. Footware: I've tried lots, and the Ronstan soft sole shoe is top notch. The soles are thinner which allows more feel for sheets sitting under your foot. Harness: I took good advice a year or so ago. NEVER go out without your harness. You'll be fine 9 times, but on the 10th when that freak storm comes up and you need to keep the boat level to get back to shore, you'll wish you had it. Sail with a harness once, sail with a harness always. Eyeware and hats also help

Great video! It should be noted that many sailing PFD's are not USCG approved which is sometimes required for sailing events in the USA. I found that the Stohlquist Edge PFD is compact, comfortable, it has as a nice pocket with a drain hole so it is very similar to the Crewsaver features, but it also meets USCG standards; so it may be a better option for sailors attending events in the USA. Love the Xero Colorado sandals! They are great in warm weather and I like that they clean up and dry quickly. Great suggestions!

A long awaited video, thank you. What about headwear? I guess that's an optional peice. I used to have one until a capsize and getting back on the boat was more the priority. I miss that cap and couldn't find another one like it, yet. And of course sunglasses. I noticed you haven't been wearing your lately. I find them essentia for mel and wear them with a floatable band.

Yes, i did think after i'd finished the video that a mention of the helmet would have been good. I haven't worn sunglasses for sailing for a long time now, I feel that they stop you from seeing as clearly after the first salt has set on them. Fresh water, better.

My knees would get tramp burn and I hate sunscreen so here in Florida I’ve taken to wearing Columbia quick dry pants with the legs you can zip off when you get back on shore. Thanks for the shoe advice I’m going to upgrade to some Gills. I agree about always wearing shoes. We have lots of trash and jumping out and stepping on things is just how it is. Plus I’ve slipped off side on trap once with bare feet

I would like to suggest a plastic WHISTLE in the bouancy aid pocket and cheap plastic POLARIZED SUNGLASSES with a strap if it is sunny. Takes the glare of the waves and you don't want to worry about loosing an expensive pair after a capsize

I definitely agree with the whistle. I gave up sailing in sunglasses a long time ago.

Great video Joe, not sure why I missed it when it came out 😟. What I found good as well is a kayak short which I wear over a tight boxer. The kayak short is tight as well, not not as a wet suit bottom, easy to put on, provide some padding as well 👍. I’ll try as well the life vest under the trapeze. But it seems weird. Finally, you “should” not just a life vest, you MUST wear a life vest at all time whatever the weather condition and whatever you want to do as long as you are on the boat at sea 😉

Personally I wear a rashy (Australian slang for rash top) and shorts that’s it, I live in Tasmania in Australia and it gets cold but I grew up never wearing a wetsuit and every time I’ve worn them I’ve been uncomfortable and more cold when I get back to shore, cuz it takes half an hour to take off. I sail predominately 125’s and rs700’s but I sometimes dabble in foiling boats like the waszp or a class cats so I usually don’t get to wet.

Excellent video, Joseph... but... where's the WHISTLE ? I always keep a whistle in my pocket, together with my knife. They are kind of "inseparable" ;-) I'd recommend you to edit your video and put a note about the need of a whistle :-)

Thanks for the tip. I've never actually carried a whistle but now that you mention it - for something so small, it's foolish not to.

Hi Joe where do you get your shorts? I’m a tall guy and always have a hard time finding nice long shorts like the ones you wore in this video. Great content keep it coming!
@JoyriderTV
@JoyriderTV 4 жыл бұрын
Those ones are pretty old - it was easy to find long board shorts up until about 10 years ago when the fashion seemed to change more to above the knee. I'm always on the look out for something with a length of 21 inches.

you forgot gloves. i'm considering a "seat" harness instead of a full one, any cons?
@JoyriderTV
@JoyriderTV 4 жыл бұрын
Sorry about the lack of gloves! The seat harness is a good choice, just not so much back support if you have any back problems a full harness is better or if you're sailing very long distance it's nice to have the support.

Also it might be a good idea to consider a helmet when you start chasing the 20knts and over....in case of capsizing seeing you ending kissing the mast ...

I'd say at the coldest we're looking at chipping ice off the trampoline, at the warmest we'd be looking at 25 degrees + but of course wind chill is a factor and if there's strong wind you should always dress a grade warmer.
