My daughter and I were in Paris for a week in early October - bring umbrella and a warm wool coat - as the week started out Mediterranean-like, sunny and warm but ended gray and drizzly. The romantic in me had hoped for a rainy day in Paris (very atmospheric when we visited Pere Lachaise and Montmartre cemeteries). Clothing: I brought a half dozen skinny jeans in neutral colors, several wool/cashmere sweaters, pretty scarves, 3 pair of quality walking shoes, 1 "LBD" and 1 pr. black dress shoes - never wore last two. We fit right in with the locals and that was exactly what we wanted - to feel like we lived there. We rented an apt. in Montmartre which was in a beautiful 17th century building near Sacre Coure and the steppes. Our landlady warmly greeted us and her apartment was beautifully decorated and had every modern convenience, tv/wifi, was spotlessly clean and had a super water pressure rainshower and Bosch washer/dryer. It even had the quintessential Parisian geraniums spilling over its Juliette balconies and a wonderful view - absolutely charming! Each morning, we could hear an accomplished (professional?) flutist practicing scales in the courtyard. It was idyllic and I wanted to move there PERMANENTLY after 1 day. This is the best way to experience Paris - rent an apt. Not only is it a fraction of hotel prices but you have more room, more privacy, get to interact with your neighbors, the local bakery, the little markets on every corner - you experience Paris as if you live there. You're really cheating yourself to stay in a hotel/opt for the tourist experience. Paris, I love you and will be back again in the fall to see the beautiful chestnut trees again and wander your beautiful, cobblestoned streets. Oh yes, deliberately get lost, then find your way home - a great way to spend a day in Paris. Don't worry, Paris is one of the safest cities for women. I am 62 and would never walk in Atlanta at 1 am but my daughter and I walked home every evening to our Montmartre apt and would stop at the bakery at 1 am for a fresh baguette and chat with the owners of the little market on the corner. Ahhh, Paris!

I agree, stay away from hotels-they rip you off monetarily and culturally. Hang with the locals as much as you can.

bonjour, i live in Paris, and want to add - due to this lady forgetting ( why , i have no idea ) , Paris is a walking city - so bring your walking shoes , most Parisian ladies wear ballet flats - that are a little dressy .. as for jeans here -- ONLY slim jeans are worn , never boot cut, or straight on women - they are trying to look ' long & lean ' , which is not hard to do , when you are average size 6 !! and she is wrong about sweaters during the summer, there is NO A/C over here, so in the metro , waiting for bus -- you will not need a sweater , but a bottle of water .. :) bises

im from paris and i would advise you to bring an umbrella because it tends to rain a lot. Also bring like a sweater during the summer because it can also get cold. Don't wear any short shorts or too revealing clothes because its not trendy and won't impress people. it is also inappropriate.

Women in Paris often have long, unadorned, untreated hair, and the scarves are necessary for the climate and are very practical. The lighter you can pack for a visit here, probably the better. You will want your own useful, comfortable footwear, however, good socks and stockings, foot care things - don't count on buying that stuff here (you probably cannot get your size, for one thing). I vacation at least twice a year here and France, and my Parisian spouse and I put everything for two for weeks into a single suitcase one of us can carry, even up hills and cobblestoned paths. We even have basic food and medical supplies in there -- it makes it so, so much easier. If we want to buy anything large, we can buy another case or have it sent. "The little dress" tip here is good. Men will do well with NO printed t-shirts, no sneakers for anything but sports or obvious activity, plain trousers, and a basic blazer. And yes, a scarf, but likely you can get a very, very nice one here. I usually only travel with three pieces of jewelry, and very, very little makeup, too.

Also does anyone know how stylish/'trendy' the areas around Villiers, Rome, Porte de Clichy and Batignolles are? Local Parisians-wise? I know they are near the fashionable & grand Parc Monceau, but I want to know about these areas around those stations

The scarves are necessary for the climate. The air is traditionally foul in France and a good scarf can help you in sudden bad weather, a temperature change, et c. If out after 4 pm, you can really catch a deadly chill in a lot of Europe, even during the most pleasant seasons. DAISY MILLER.

same as London...I lived 3 yrs there, 2 weeks in Paris 2 in Holland and know this, only tourists wear sweats/sneakers and yoga pants with zip up matching jackets. Carry a camera and bag and pick pockets beam in on you! "tourists" I wore my money in a flat leather bag inside my jacket or blouse or sweater..my purse only carried my keys, lipstick and brush.

I'm going to paris and anywhere else I'm bringing my camera I don't give a fu*k. What good is taking a vacation if you can't do something you like and reflect back on it or show others in a couple of years? I willl say this though I'll wear a camera strap if somebody thinks of robbing me they have to take my head off they want to get my camera.
