I do agree that the dress code should not be less than “smart”. I love seeing the nice outfits with hats.

I feel that lowering a dress code (to make an event more “accessible” to the masses) is actually very insulting to the masses. What a ludicrous presumption that average people can’t dress smartly! I think it was a misstep by event organizers. Dress codes are nice. And you’re so correct to say that lowering the price of admission would have been better.

I agree that was a very insulting comment about making the event more accessible to the masses, I grew up in the times when people went out dressed as smart as they could afford 😉

Absolutely, lowering the price of the ticket, NOT the standard of the dress code! Cheers! Ilona xx

I 100% agree with you about the importance of dress codes. Unfortunately, often when dress codes fall by the way side, manners quickly follow.

Subscribed! I'm from Australia and I agree with you about dress codes; people love a LEGITIMATE event to dress up for. Fashion history channels and fashion history exhibitions are booming, and demonstrate just how nostalgic people are for those eras when dressing up was the norm, not a rarity. Horseracing events provide a place where people can dress up without feeling costume-y or out of place; the elevated dress code provides a safe place for this. And the traditional racing dress codes have never kept ordinary people away; I know of someone who won a Fashion In The Field competition (prize money around $40,000) wearing a pair of $10 shoes from Kmart, which she painted to match her hat; another won first prize wearing a frock made at home by her grandmother. Horseracing provides a rare opportunity for people to explore a unique fashion path with a long tradition, and it's a mistake to take that away from the public.

I strongly agree with you. Most of the time, when people are dressed up, they behave better. It doesn't have to be expensive. We have "Fashion In the Field" competitions at major race meetings in New Zealand. They are my favourite part. Huge prizes can be won.

Glad to see you back. I just bought two straw hats at thrift stores knowing that, because of your videos, I can confidently re-trim them to suit myself and put in a band on the one that's slightly too large.

I totally agree that the yellow firework hat and thr blue explosion were too much, but I also think there were far too many pink roses on a hat you approved of, and the very large red hat with black and white frou frou at the back was over the top for the event and dwarfed the lady’s small face beneath it.

Nice video! I love your videos. Is it ok to wear a hat with a kimono style jacket? I'm planning to wear the jacket for Easter and I have a straw hat that is a similar color to some of the print on the kimono. Thank you.

I am so pleased to see a new video from you! I enjoyed seeing all the lovely hats and I agree with everything you said about them, except for one thing. I think the enormous red disc hat was too big for the wearer and just a bit overdone.

I agree - those huge overdone pieces are hard to look at and do confuse me at times. Clearly these racegoers are buying from well established hat designing houses, so how do these designers get the rules of design so wrong. Theres individual customer preferences, but I would have assumed those making the headpieces woulld make sure the pieces they produce are well balanced in texture, style, colour and novelty value. I also agree, Its mystifying how and why women would go to such lengths to look so fabulous but appear to miss the opportunity to look more polished and more finished. Alas, Australia still has not got the brief about hats...I still get funny looks, but as its approaching winter I will get away with it more.
