I got back into biking after a 30 year break! When I finally bought a house with a garage one of the first things I did was go out and buy a 1984 Suzuki GP100, almost identical to the bike I had when I was 17. Fast forward a couple of years and I finally passed my test (aged 49) in July this year. I already knew what bike I wanted, but still took one for a test ride, just in case for some reason I didn't like it as much as I thought I would - but fortunately I did. So I'm now the proud owner of a new 2021 Royal Enfield Interceptor 650. It's "only" an A2 bike, I could have bought something far more powerful - but it's exactly what I want from a bike and can't see me replacing it any time soon. It's got the classic looks that I love, it's got the power to keep up with the traffic on an A-road (unlike my little GP100 with my weight on it! My old one used to go so much faster - but I was probably two or three stone lighter all those years ago!). I'm not interested in doing silly speeds any more, maybe I would have been if I'd continued to ride through my 20's and 30's - but these days that doesn't interest me at all. I'm a fair weather rider too, not commuting and never really in a hurry whenever I go for a ride - so the the Interceptor suits me perfectly. I've still got the old GP too and have no plans on getting rid of that either, it's only going to go up in value the older it gets :)
@MotoEcosse3 жыл бұрын
Hey Steve. I've personally never ridden the GP100 but I do know of them. Great looking wee bikes as well. The Royal Enfield is becoming a really popular bike, and quite rightly so. They do look great fun to ride. I'd also keep a hold of the GP100. If not for value's sake then definitely sentinel. Glad you've decided to get back into riding as well. Ride safe. 🤜🤛
@stevethebikinggrandad3 жыл бұрын
@@MotoEcosse Thanks, my only regret is that I didn't get back into riding sooner! The interceptor is a brilliant bike, and I'd actually say it's a pretty good first bike too. Not too powerful that you'll get yourself into trouble due to inexperience, handles great too. That said I only really have the Kawasaki ER6-N to compare it with as that's what I took my test on. Yeah, I'm keeping the GP100 even if I decide in future to replace the Interceptor. There's something about the noise and smell of a 2-stroke, even if it's not very quick!

Fourteen years ago, after a two day course in a shopping mall carpark in Colorado, I bought a Triumph Tiger 955i as my first bike. I'm still alive now of course, so it wasn't a fatal decision, but in retrospect maybe not a brilliant plan. The thing with riding a (potentially) fast bike before you're skilled up is that you need to be non-impulsive and able to exercise restraint, and if you were like that you'd maybe just buy a smaller bike. Nowadays I'm on a CB500X ... physically about the same size as the Tiger, but cheaper, half the HP, and very economical (in fuel and insurance), but I can still get round the Cairngorms in a day without effort. A2-compatible is a nice sweet spot.

Passed MOD2 in May this year and bought a 2nd hand Suzuki V-Strom 650 within a month. Didn’t want something crazy fast as speed kills (well deceleration really) and I was still a bit nervous. Wanted it for weekend rides, future tours and maybe some short commuting. I think that the drivers for me getting this bike were that it fitted the bill for those requirements but also was similar in style to those that my instructors rode whilst training me (halo effect?) and I perceived it to give a good upright position to see and be seen - safety was my key priority. I did lots of internet searches but probably not enough ‘real world’ searching - I only rode 3 bikes in test rides, one of which I ultimately bought. Despite that, experienced rider buddies say that it suits my style of riding and I’m really enjoying owning it. Having said that a first bike is only a FIRST bike - I’m sure that I and others will move on and enjoy owning other machines.

Great advice as always. I did have a big issue trying to decide on bikes, but that was more due to my height. I found a lot of bikes too high for me. Even when I had a cbf125 I could barely touch the ground, but after learning on a lowered bike I realised I could get lowering kits which helped me a bit better. I was actually lucky to find a triumph street triple R with a lowering kit and crash bungs already fitted. So that's a bit of advice for someone else who is around 5ft 3. You can also ride bikes so don't let your height put you off.

Great vid as always and as always great advice. Passed mod 2 few months ago now went for Kawasaki versys 650. All the power I need ( for now) also really comfy riding position. Think they class it as sports tourer so bit of both worlds. Had Mrs J on it after building my confidence just recently and she is smitten so looks like more money getting drained out the clothing account. Your advice is spot on. Take a step back, see what kind of rider you'll be and if you'll be going out with others ( ride your own ride) then take some test drives. You dont get much choice when learning so make the right choice for your hard earned spondoolies. Thanks for another great vid.

Interesting watch this thanks. I have been riding almost 3 1/2 years now on CBT, sat my CBT in 2019 and bought myself a Honda Grom which has been brilliant, wanted to do my test last year but was cancelled twice due to covid then my CBT ran out so had to do it again so decided to stay on the Grom another year but at the point now where I would like a bit more power. Sat my theory test last week and passed so hopefully sitting my Mod 1 & 2 next month. I use my Grom daily all year around, approx. 10mile commute and occasional longer trips, mainly around 20/30miles on B roads. So was thinking something like a Honda CB300R or BMW G310R would suit my needs as I mostly commute within Aberdeen. I did contemplate a CB650R but there is a big step-up in price and not sure it would be worth the extra money for my needs.

Great video and great advice as always. I did my CBT in April and loved the look of cafe racers so bought a Sinnis Bomber. Never looked back. Kinda hooked on cafe racers now and my first thought was ‘Triumph Thruxton, all the way’. Then I thought, ‘yeah, a 1200 cc bike? I’ll be dead in a week!’ So I’m going for the Royal Enfield Continental GT 650. Still that cafe racer but less ‘kill me on the corner’. You’re right though - I took a big gamble on the riding position, fortunately paid off as most of my road time is cruising the South Downs. Hey, Dave. I'm so happy I went with the 650. I've been lucky enough to get a go on the 1000 SV and it just wasn't for me. I've ridden plenty of 1000s and a lot are absolutely fine, the SV 1000 though just feels super aggressive, I'm guessing that's down to the torque of the V-twin engine, with the 650 though you can get a lot more out of the engine, especially on our roads, and 650 is more than enough to have loads of fun on. 🤜🤛
