Watching this video, I’m sitting in my 5x10 tablecloth hammock. It is setup 24/7 in my house. My backpacking hammocks are much lighter and less bulky, but still heavier than laying-on-the-ground sleeping. It’s worth it to me. Thanks for all your work.

8 years in as a full time hanger. Current fave is my Sierra Madre king size Ninox double layer flatlay. Also keep a Emo strung up in my minivan for short car camping hangs.

Every night hanger for 4 years now on a One Wind in the house. I must admit my Dutch Wear Chameleon is my camping hammock. I have it decked out with side car, side sling and bug net , with peak storage on each end + bling. But what is the best on both is a ridge line to use my Hang Time Hook for the Phone. I can watch Vids and such while I fall asleep or just hang around. Not a plug for Derek , but the damn thing is GREAT. If you do not have one your missing out on a very enhanced experience. IMHO

I have one hammock I use for lounging, sleeping and camping, a TTTM parachute style hammock. It's not _that_ lightweight, but light enough for short trips. And so comfortable! I started out lounging and gradually upgraded my setup to sleeping in my backyard and short camping trips. I've so far added a tarp, bug net, ridgeline, underquilt, whoopie slings, ridgeline organizer, loop aliens… which reminds me that it's also possible to spend more money than you thought on this hobby. Because it will become a hobby once you're hooked (hitched?), soon you'll be modifying or making your own equipment. It's a rabbit hole. You may just end up with several hammocks. But you can start simple and stop at any time. (Or can you?)

That's how I started as well -- it's a great way to learn what works for you and try different things before or instead of investing a LOT of money on a single "kit" that may or may not deliver for you.

I live in the northeast and camp year round. I used to sleep on the ground under a tarp because I love waking up, opening my eyes and looking through the woods, at the stream, across the lake, wherever I found to set up. (over the cliff? That was only once, lol) Hammocks offer all the same benefits and are super comfortable. So I guess I'm a camper....except I keep one with me at work and use it sometimes for conference calls, etc. Soooooo, lounger too? Haha

Wait did I just hear you say “it doesn’t matter how you hang it”?!? Kidding. Awesome video and great use of your amazing skills to visualize the differences easily. I refuse, however, to live under the tyranny of “or”, and instead embrace the beauty of “and”. The “two types of user” vernacular assumes a false dichotomy we artificially have put on the hammock “product set”. I like the language you used at the end when you asked “Where are you on the spectrum?” So that’s closer to an “and”. The “job to be done” correlates highly with those two product use case design scenarios you mention. If my job to be done is a thru hike, other elements of my product choice would shift (durability in particular).

For loungers -- yeah! I mean, hang it loose, tight; you're only in it a short time. Camper? No, you gotta hang it right :)

I‘m using my amazonas ultralight mosquito traveler for lounging and camping. With a tarp from the brand and the underquilt poncho. Did read your book, thx for some good tips. Maybe try an amazonas ultralight some of your thoughts about it would be great to hear.

Does anyone sell replica WWII USN hammocks?

Been hammocking a few years by now (influenced by your guide, thx 🙏), mostly hiking and bikepacking, so surely get the camper input. One caveat though, is the "cold butt syndrome" which you also nicely talks about in your latest videos. The dilemma is, that I wish to travel light, and don't have room for quilt, extra sleeping, pad or the like. Sometimes I can get around the problem with a liner (eg Sea To Summit Thermolite) but depending on season, that's not enough 🥶 Wondering if an "emergency gold/silver blanket" attached to the bottom (outside) of the hammock could work 🤔 ... might have to test that next time. Still looking for an optimal lite-traveling solution 🤓

Have you tried Insultex? One of my favorite lightweight under quilts. I also paired that with a custom reflectix "emergency blanket" UQ. I have also used a Mylar/reflectix emergency sleeping bivy sack to boost the warmth of a summer quilt down to 30 degrees.
