Since United Starship sounds like a starship with a crew not at each other’s throat instead of designating from what government it hails, I suspect early in the first season, they were thinking what would come to be called the Federation was the “United Stars” and that “USS” meant “United Stars Ship”.

I always thought NCC would be better served as Navigational Communication Code. Every fleet formation display on star trek always shows NCC registries. In Picard season 3, they identify NCC-1701-D on the screen before figuring that was the Enterprise. Just a fun thought. 💭

If they had done Court Marshal after they had created formal StarFleet and the UFP then they could have said: United Starfleet Ship or better yet UFS United Federation Ship However in the first 13 episodes what we know as the situation was vaguely United Earth Colonies, Space Service, Earth Fleet, United Earth Space Exploration ... And the Enterprise was a "Starship" class heavy cruiser to that fleet. Constitution Class didn't appear till the 70s

UFS Enterprise....if they had thought of the Federation before the last half of season 1, when Coon came in as showrunner.

"United Starfleet Ship" anyone...?

“United Starfleet Ship” doesn’t really roll off the tongue, but makes the most sense as when it was founded, the Federation would have to merge together the various militaries and defense forces of all its member planets.

This is the meaning I remembered, which, when I did think about it, seems awkward. I thought a mistake was made in “The Motion Picture” by not changing it to Federation Star Ship (F. S. S.).

Why not ufs United federation starship

Because they didn't think of the Federation till two pilots and 11 episodes were already in the can. Kirk called his fleet several vague things...called the government several vague things...and originally through S2 only humans were on those ships as Vulcan, Andoria etc had their own fleets...more like NATO. That's why Spock was a curiosity.
