In the wake of the Russian Revolution and mired in a civil war, Vladimir Lenin made major changes to the Russian economy. These changes reflected his awareness of political and social realities (as well as economic ones), but they also reveal Lenin's willingness to adjust when needed. This time, I'll discuss his New Economic Policy and the results it had on the Soviet Union. I hope you enjoy it.

A few notes: -Trotsky actually proposed the basic ideas of the NEP before Lenin. -The NEP wasn't quite an abandonment of Communism. It was mostly lightening up on the peasantry, who had suffered the most from the Civil War. The peasants and workers were in an alliance, and compromises had to be made to ensure that union remained intact. -Because of how backwards Russia was, the traditional stereotypes and classic policies of Marxism don't really apply. Lenin and Trotsky knew full Socialism couldn't be immediately implemented. The video points out that they implemented something vaguely resembling socialism in the more advanced economic sectors, while leaving markets alone in backwards peasant sectors. This is how they tried to address unequal development. -The parts on censorship and other repressive measures were really unrelated to the NEP, except that both were the repeal of temporary crisis measures from the war.

Trotsky's irrelevant. He first opposed the policy of "war communism" to be abolished after the civil war, calling it a betrayal of the revolution. Even though it had nothing of "communist" in it. He then went on to support forced collectivisation, being part of the ultra-left of the party. Trotsky is unreliable. LENIN: ”What a swine this Trotsky is-Left phrases, and a bloc with the Right…” -”Letter to Alexandra Kollontai” (1917)

Its so fascinating, I wonder if Russia had stuck to NEP if they could have been where China is today back in the 70s. Trade liberalization would still be needed but the U.S. may have been more open to it if they could meet Russian capitalists and see something familiar

Trotsky wasn't the main opposition in the party. At his heigth, he only managed to form a block of 4000 in the party, against 700 000 supporting Stalin. No, when Lenin died, the more serious contender were Bukarin (very popular), Zinoviev (influential) and Stalin (Lenin protege and a solid workhorse).

This was actually a poorly done, deeply mistaken recap of the NEP. The first and most glaring fallacy is based upon the idea that communism and socialism are things that leaders can just declare. "Ok, nationalize everything. We're socialist now!" This isn't how it works. To establish socialism requires certain material preconditions (hence the Marxist theory of historical materialism). Lenin, correctly of course, assessed that the Russian Empire was not yet ready for socialism because it was lacking certain material conditions and productive capabilities that are required for a socialist superstructure and base. Therefore, the goal of the NEP was to establish what Lenin called, "state capitalism" to progress industrialization. Another key thing that people misunderstand is that socialists and communists aren't against capitalism per se, because capitalism is an important step on the way to Marxist socialism and the ultimate goal of a stateless, classless communist society. Since the Bolsheviks had already achieved the capture of the Russian state, they couldn't use bourgeois private capitalism to develop their industry, they had to use a different type of capitalism. Socialism is not, in the Marxist-leninist tradition, used for industrialization but occurs after industrialization is complete. Using state capitalism was extremely successful for the soviet economy. When you compare the growth rates of the Russain economy in the 1920s and 1930s to the rest of the world, it was booming. It went from a backward agricultural serfdom to an industrial power in 2 decades. No other country in the history of the world has accomplished such a feat. They had to take a pragmatic and not an ideological approach to industrialization. They put the first human into space within 30 years of founding the country. They had world class arts and universities. All achieved from a backward, war torn country within one generation.

Please take notice that it is Lenin who DID SPEAK OUT AGAINST PREDATORY WARS, peasants being lead to Slaughter, as sacrificial lambs .. V. I. Lenin : against war. Speaking out Speech Delivered at an International Meeting in Berne, February 8, 1916[1] each month, as each day of the war goes by, it becomes clearer and clearer to the masses of the workers that the Zimmerwald = Manifesto[2] expressed the truth when it declared that phrases about “defence of the fatherland” and the like are nothing but capitalist deception. It is becoming more evident every day that this is a war between capitalists, between big robbers, who are quarrelling over the loot, each striving to obtain the largest share, the largest number of countries to plunder, and the largest number of nations to suppress and enslave. It may sound incredible, especially to Swiss comrades, but it is nevertheless true that in Russia, also, not only bloody tsarism, not only the capitalists, but also a section of the so-called or ex-Socialists say that Russia is fighting a “war of defence,” that Russia is only fighting against German invasion. The whole world knows, however, that for decades tsarism has been oppressing more than a hundred million people belonging to other nationalities in Russia; that for decades Russia has been pursuing a predatory policy towards China, Persia, Armenia and Galicia. Neither Russia, nor Germany, nor any other Great Power has the right to claim that it is waging a “war of defence”; all the Great Powers are waging an imperialist, capitalist war, a predatory war, a war for the oppression of small and foreign nations, a war for the sake of the profits of the capitalists, who are coining golden profits amounting to billions out of the appalling sufferings of the masses, out of the blood of the proletariat.

Its simply like so, as recently as the 80 or 90's a medical team set out from Beijing China, to treat ethnic minorities in remote China. The equipment was the latest, the most complete BUT THE LOCALS WOULD NOT HAVE IT. In Aussie, the Federal Government is poring more and more money into indigenous Health, using all sorts of strategies, local health people etc. And yet Statistics clearly show that indigenous health is exponentially ( in a down downturn fashion ) falling. There is THAT ASPECT OF HUMAN NATURE. There is also the other : simple cowardice, hypocrisy etc. HUMAN CONDITION IS warts and all, its not a question of Capitalism..please don't be the apologist of chaos, disorganisation, in short EVIL, ignorance and obscurantism..

vudulp I mean that’s Marxism 101. Capitalism industrialized and then we evolve to communism. So yeah we need capitalism for communism to happen and the Soviet Union didn’t really massively industrialize until Stalin. So yeah ofc capitalism would have been more successful in a semi feudalist state than communism the material means for communism didn’t exist

@@LesPaul2006 considering that Russia had never went through a bourgeois revolution and established capitalism, the NEP was necessary as Marxists do not claim socialism to be possible in isolation according to historical materialism. The material conditions of Russia made the NEP necessary and it was later replaced by socialism

Its time inaccurate but also historically, basically all. it's also bias. lenin try to stablish the "capitalist stated" in order to acquire the capital to hachive a socialist stated. Marxl has nothing to do with going back to capitalist... the kulaks revolt was in 29/33 with stalin no lenin the nep was in 19/20. Lenin was even confront with the fact by the ideological adversaries the russia didn't have the "capital" to make the transition to socialism. how marxl says Lenin implement the nep to try active socialism while at the same time you get your hand on capital using the mean of production.. about the bias of the guy talking crap it's normal in ignorant people
