What was MALIK NEWMAN'S mistake?

As professional athletes coming into any professional sports, you don't get to determine where you will play for the first years of your career. You don't get to pick your coach, teammates, GM or fans like you do in college. Sometimes it works out for you and sometimes it doesn't. Here's an athlete it didn't workout for as of now. Here's 3 reasons why I think their growth was abruptly stunted. Who knows, maybe they'll return to form. I sure hope so. Thank you for watching. Leaving Kansas was the issue. He should have built on the ncaa tournament and came back and ran the point. Graham and mason both were seniors and drafted. Like you said someone was giving him bad advice

hell. his first mistake was not going to KU to begin with..he chose Miss State over KU..he basically wasted 2 seasons..1 at MSU, and the other having to sit out a year because of transfer rule

First he one of the best from the sip but what people don't realize about us is in Mississippi is we play different because we are really short he got lucky playing off guard because at 6'26'3 we playing big man and the guards are 5'5to 5'10 and yeah Mississippi State was not right cause in highschool he was really highly ranked

Good video. I went to college in Mississippi during Malik’s high school years and I watched him at Mississippi state and Kansas and I said the same things you said in the video. One point I would add though is he should have came back to Kansas for his junior year and in the off season worked on his ball handling point guard skills and also his defense. He had all the tools he was just lacking consistency at the high major level and the ability to slide over and play the point.

i like leaving comments before actually watching the video. his mistake was leaving kansas. i remember him playing one year at miss st then transferring to kansas. if i recall i think he only played their one year. in high school he was very brash and cocky like a lot of the top high school recruits but i think he was more so. i recall him doing well in the ncaa tourney last year, they beat duke in the elite eight. he should have stayed one more year with bill self and become the focus on offense because this year's kansas would not have graham so he, malik, would have been the go to scorer.

edit: he should have definitely stayed one more year at kansas and worked on his pg skills or better yet, worked on it during that year that he sat out after transferring. steph's freshmen and sophomore years he was basically the sg at davidson. he played a lot off ball. he received a lot of feed back after his sophomore season that he was too small to play sg in the league so that summer, between soph-junior season, he worked on his pg skills. when he came back for his junior season he was playing more with the ball in his hands, creating for teammates and still creating his own shot.

Kansas was not the wrong school for malik. He averaged 22.5 points in March and absolutely carried us to the final 4 with Devonte Graham.

I actually think going to Mississippi State made sense at the time because of Ben Howland he did a great job with guards at UCLA (Russell Westbrook, Jordan Farmar, Darren Collison, Aaron Affalo, Jrue Holiday) Newman was seen as just as talented if not more talented as those guys back then. A lot of great college coaches “hold back” their star players in college look at Dean Smith and Coach Cal, a lot of their superstars had average numbers in college and then went to the league and balled out once they got more freedom and floor space.

Malik monk has the same measurable and close to the same game with monk having more bounce but more no went 11th overall bc he went it Kentucky and broke a lot of there scoring records as a freshman averaging 20 crazy how age and numbers can be the difference between 11th overall and undrafted

@stuntedgrowth Good video bro but I think you got some of your facts mixed up and one stunt you missed imo. There was a big hype job with this kid. Great kid and work ethic is unmatched but if you talked you guys from the city during his time JPS talent level was really low. First off if you watched him play he did nothing really exceptional. He was really good at everything but nothing exceptional. I loved watching him play because he was so sound with his game. He took advantage of a lot of low level guys guarding him. There's one player that was actually listed as a SG out of high school who averaged 30 against him if I remember correctly and never lost from a smaller school. Quindarry Weatherspoon. You were incorrect with Malik's ranking out of highschool. He was the the #1 PG coming because he his way to the NBA was playing point so that changed from SG to PG. Ge wasn't even the best SG in bis state that year. Q was better. Next stunt was injuries Malik was injured his whole Fr year and didn't play in a lot of games and his time was on the floor was not high because he was always working back from injuries. To be honest his confidence took a hit imo because whether he admits it or not he shot terribly his Fr year and his inability to finish at the rim or get to the rim was on display. He went to Kansas and I got why but he was like their 4 th or 5th scoring option there. Most of the time he was benefiting from Devontae Graham and the other players taking so much attention of him defensively from other teams. He flourished in that set up. Once again the reason he left Kansas quickly was because he had a great tourney and if he would of stayed I believe it would of been MSU part 2. He would of got exposed for things like the fact he is not a PG and is really streaky more than anything. People tried to compare him to Monta Ellis. Sorry guys anyone from Jackson would tell you not even close in comparison and back then the talent was so much better. Hell Monta outscored opposing teams. Dude put up 65 against a team that scored less than him total. Malik was a great kid, very hard worker, and a joy to watch but I think he was very limited after highschool in what he could do unless the environment was right. Good point. Let's not forget Monta and Lou came up in a time where it was "in" or "ok" being smaller at the 2. A.I made that possible. Different times. Also how often does that happen, especially in today's game where a smaller guy is coveted. Lou and Monta were also superior scoring machines! Like probably the best ever at that tweener size. Had they went to Kansas would've averaged 45.

He should have tried to learn to play pg. He bought into his hype from hs thinking he would come into college doing the same thing he did in hs. He struggled at miss st with his shooting & he doesn't get to the paint. By the time he was able to get on the floor at Kansas it was already pretty much a wrap for him.

I saw him play in highschool when he was freshman and he was ballin frfr. I'm from the gulf coast of Mississippi and I went to Jackson for a weekend because I had a lil shawty up there but the dope boys and og's made sure if Malik went to a party he was protected one night somebody got they ass whipped and robbed fucking with him over some dumb shit they didn't give a fuck. BTW Devin Booker who played against my high school St Martin was a cool ass nigga real laid back and quite he pulled up at my homeboy house party in high school when he played for Moss Point high school (look up Moss Point it's the fucking slums real talk) Devin Booker pops was a baller back in there 90s he got his son to move down to Mississippi a few years after Katrina to play ball down here. Shout out to OG Chris Jackson from Gulfport MS which is about the 20 mins away from me he got black balled by the NBA in the 90s

@@jbsix No. If he chose KU his freshman year he would get more exposure, BUT not as much playing time with frank mason, devonte graham, wayne selden, and SVi there. All NBA players. Colin Sexton was basically a one man team at Alabama. Malik wouldn't have been the man at Kansas. I am a KU fan and loved what Malik did last year. So I am not buying that bc he went to Miss St first it ruined his career. He should have stayed at Kansas for this year, where he WOULD have been the man. Because KU is terrible this year and Adoka and Silvia are both out, along with VIck.

The Mississippi coach was the worse for him, because he emphasized team basketball. The problem in America I suppose, it’s more a concept of franchise player, than total team play. Malik was not seen in Mississippi playing team ball, but isn’t that the key element in Kansas team play. I get your point, he should be a more selfish player, look out for himself more, and increased his draft stock. Yep, that’s what Carmelo did, and many other selfish players.
