The very last VHS tape I ever bought turned up BLANK on day 1!

I saw that movie in theaters, great film, sound quality was so realistic, it sounded like the guy was crunching popcorn right next to me! It must have been a tape with the rare DTS track.

My first job was at Blockbuster, started July 13, 1997. A lot of people don't realize just how much a VHS movie cost. Each copy of a movie cost Blockbuster about $100-120 or so, and they were buying in massive volume. I can only imagine what each tape cost a mom n' pops store.

I haven't collected VHS tapes since 2010. The last VHS tape I bought was Small Soldiers as I found it for cheap at a local thrift store. The newest movie I own on VHS may be the SpongeBob Squarepants Movie or The Incredibles.

My last tape was The Matrix Reloaded, for which I paid a dollar. It's still sealed and I also wound up with it on DVD, HD-DVD, and Blu-ray. I've never actually finished it. I figured I'd watch it someday when I bought the DVD, and then it came bundled with my HD-DVD player, and the Matrix trilogy was the same price as the first movie standalone on Blu-ray. And yes, I have plenty of old tapes I need to get around to digitizing. Old tapes with original commercials are a blast.

i can't even remember the last vhs i bought. i rarely bought movies on vhs, more of a rental guy. but i do have a vcr still, a sony slv-555uc. picked it up at a thrift for basically free. less than five bucks. fixed the stuck swing arm, repaired the cracked tape feeder arm gear, relubed the idler gears and it plays like a dream. i don't often look through the vhs tapes at thrifts, but every now and then something will catch my attention. a copy of madonna's "justify my love" video single, the music video vhs of george michaels _faith_ , a copy of mariah's flop _glittter_ ... it all just takes me back.

I still have 4 VHS machines, although none get used regularly. A Panasonic SVHS which still sits in my AV rack under the TV next to a Laserdisc Player, Blu-Ray recorder, a Zidoo 4K Media Player and a Humax Digital TV Recorder. The other machines are a JVC SVHS/MiniDV Combo recorder attached to a laptop for digital transfers to PC, a Sony standard VHS Recorder that only gets used every few months just to keep it working and a Panasonic DVD/VHS Recorder Combo for quick transfers to DVD from VHS when required. I honestly cannot remember the last commercial VHS tape I actually bought as I purchased my first DVD Player in very late 1999, and have bought only DVD and then Blu-Ray discs since then.

I miss VHS cassettes for the same reason I miss audio cassettes: instant on. If the VCR or tape deck was off, it was ready in two seconds, not two minutes like a computer. Press play or record as needed, and it worked. I also loved that VHS had hifi audio. I used VHS tapes to record six hours of radio overnight, the only way to do it at a time (the 1990s) when computer hard drives were small and 16 bit sound cards were expensive.
@Aeduo29 күн бұрын
I dunno, some VCRs have to do a whole dance when powering on before they'll take a tape in, then a whole other performance to load a tape with a bunch of buzzing and clunking. :p but yeah they did let you skip the previews.

I moved over to DVD around 2007. I don't remember the last film I bought on VHS but I do remember the high cost of prerecorded video tapes. In the early 90s I bought a boxed set of Fawlty Towers the comedy series with John Cleese. This was a 4 tape special edition set from WH Smith ( a high street chain here in the UK) in a slipcase with 3 episodes per tape. Cost me £45 - around $60 - a lot of money back then for a few hours running time and this was the cheapest option. The standard box set from the BBC then was about £65.

These days my son has my mothers old VHS player and s handful of tapes while my SLHF970D Betamax is still plugged into my tv though with most of the tapes buried in a closet there are only a few that I watch.

By the time I was old enough to independently buy movies, we had a DVD player, though I never bought many DVDs to own, we'd just pick ones to rent. So, I don't know if I've ever bought a VHS movie with my own money, nor received one as a gift. I've gotten DVDs as gifts. Otherwise, when we'd have VHSes, they were just purchased for whoever wanted to watch it.

Some have mentioned Alien: Romulus. I'll add the Norwegian 2010 movie "Kommandør Treholt & ninjatroppen", literally meaning "Commander Treholt and the Ninja Squad," though I understand that it was released with the simpler English title "Norwegian Ninja." The premise is that Arne Treholt, in the real world arrested and convicted in 1984 for espionage for the Soviet Union, was in fact a leader of a secret group of ninjas. It's not a masterpiece but any stretch of the imagination. It got a VHS release in keeping with the 1980s setting.

No, Alien Romulus will be the last movie on VHS which is getting released Dec 2024 And while I own multiple VCR's I don't plan to buy Alien Romulus. The last VHS I bought was a widescreen copy of Jurassic Park which was in the clearance bin at Best Buy. I did buy blank tapes since on eBay for a friend who needed DVDS put of VHS for her artistic son. (Edited for spelling correction)

Today I am a professional multimedia artist, digital video editing is a big part of that. But my first experiences on this path were extremely janky, but also ingenious. As a teenager in the year 2000, my family didn't have a camcorder, but a friend of mine did. We took this one to start making "movies". With drawn pictures on paper, recorded with the camera, or later better and better real flicks, though of course seen with today's eyes, with a cringe level over 9000. Anyway, my first proper and well made digital edit was in 2005, but before that, I did not have a computer and could only edit the analogue way. I connected several VCRs and the camcorder with self crafted cables, chained videogame consoles and other utilities in between for music and sounds. I played either from one VCR or from the camcorder and recorded onto another VCR to try to jank together the cut. Running all the audio through a hifi system, with which I could mix in sounds from various sources. As mentioned, janky as hell, but the only way I could do it back then. I didn't even know yet, that digital video editing exists. And today I am a mastermind with any kind of creative software on the computer and working on the first episode on a very elaborated animated channel, whose editing will be far beyond the usual scope of places like KZbin. Because passion. And I believe I never personally bought any original movie on VHS. When I had a little bit of money in 2001 from teenage jobs, DVD was established enough so that I wouldn't buy a VCR for myself. Little did I know, that the DVD player would turn out to be way more interesting to create my own DVDs and VideoCDs when I later had a computer and always being filled with joy, when they ran as expected on the TV. So basically I did watch original movies on VHS less as that I did all kinds of recording with those. I was late enough to the game to realize, that DVDs are far superior for consuming industrial video over VHS. Still, I kept a VCR in my posession I believe until 5 years ago, should I run into the situation to digitalize any kind of VHS tape from somebody. It never happened, so eventually I gave it away and I don't cling to old times. Even though I have quite the history with VHS tapes, I wouldn't want to keep doing stuff with those. If only for the exception, if you'd want to have not a digital VHS filter in a video, but having an authentic VHS image. Authentic is always best.
@travingalloverthemap8375Ай бұрын
I would say somewhere between 80% to maybe 85% of the movies I have are on VHS. If you're looking for ideas for videos you should talk about the DVD and VHS combos or the Blu-ray and VHS combos. What i have is a DVD and vhs combo.
