It's because they did not believe that God is ONE and no one is HIS partner. The Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) believed that before his Prophethood. The kalma requires Muslims to believe in one God (Allah) and to believe that Holy Rasool ﷺ is the Final Messenger of Allah. So technically, He believed the half of it (as he didn't know he was going to be bestowed with the Last Messenger position). His parents used to worship many idols till their last breath.

His ancestors were polytheist, and he made up a religion centered on himself by plagiarizing mostly judaism and christianity, but also plenty pagan mythologies. Sure, for a European, that look could be mistaken for an arab, just like a Chinese spectator could mistake a Brit for a German. Jesus branched off judaism. Then God proved His promise by the children of Israel and nation of Israel then Jesus (God the Word from John 1:1-14) becoming flesh in the descendant of David and Abraham through the virgin Mary and Joseph. Then Jesus living perfectly as God and man being tempted in every way but not sinning unlike the first Adam who sinned, Jesus then giving His life on the cross and resurrecting so that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life with God both on earth and after they die. Aisha RA testifies that she saw her parents' entire lives converted to Islam, but Abu Bakr RA (father of Aisha RA) converted to Islam in 610, and Muhammed SAW married Aisha RA in 632, do some math and find out that aisha RA wasn't 6 years old. there is also a third reason why aisha RA was physically and mentally mature at marriage, so. then we do not submit to muhammed SAW, the very first chapter of the quran surah al fatiha denies this with "In the Name of Allah-the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful. All praise is for Allah-Lord of all worlds,1. the Most Compassionate , Most Merciful. You ˹alone˺ we worship and You ˹alone˺ we ask for help." we don't worship a human, yes we give blessing to muhammed SAW, but we also do it for isa AS (christ) and ibrahim AS (abraham) 5 times a day! The verses from Quran chapter 6( Surah :Al-an'am) 161-163 are as, (6:161) Say: 'As for me, my Lord has guided me on to a straight way, a right religion, the way of Abraham who adopted it in exclusive devotion to Allah, and he was not of those who associated others with Allah in His divinity.' (6:162) Say: 'Surely my Prayer, all my acts of worship, and my living and my dying are for Allah alone, the Lord of the whole universe. (6:163) He has no associate. Thus have I been bidden, and I am the foremost of those who submit themselves (to Allah). Dr Naik spoke absolute truth. Please revisit the chapter or make sure the source you're reading the Qur'an from is correct

As he rightly says, Islam i.e. the monotheistic faith about Allah was revealed much before Prophet Muhammad pbuh was born. However, some were on the pure monotheistic faith while majority had gone astray. some of them became polytheists and some as atheists (or antagonist). Shriah (laws) revealed in Torah and other revelations prior to it were there but in somewhat distorted form. It is historically evident that Prophet Muhammad did not worship any idol, yet he used to worship Allah in a cave called "hira". Nevertheless, until divine revelations were given to him he must not have any idea of Shriah hence his worship must had been more of conceptual alone - remembering Allah. Just like Prophet Ibrahim did.
