I know we don’t have that much information in canon, but I think that the way you described sector governments having militia type militaries is kinda how I imagine the New Republic Military working, basically ineffective in a large scale, that’s why the resistance exists.

Which is probably one of the dumbest plot points of the new films. The New Republic demilitarisation only exists for meta reasons: so we can have rebels Vs empire again. No post Republic government in their right mind would demilitarise.

The Judicial forces where a military, it was a Gendarmerie. And there was nothing wrong with that, they where not facing another state with a massive conventional force. The Judicial forces where fine as organized, the issue was they where too small. If the Judicial forces where beefed up in terms of size the republic could have responded better to the internal crisis's that plagued it up to the clone wars. The republic didn't need masses of super star destroyers, it needed to be able to respond quickly but more importantly keep a long term presence and not be dependent on local planetary forces and the jedi or alternatively a better system should have been in place to "Federalize" them in the same way the Militia and National Guard of the United States and other countries are

In a galaxy that has already seen numerous wars, every peace era, no matter how it can or has lasted is going to end sooner or later. There's nothing wrong with keeping an actual battle-ready millitary force. Sure, in peace times, you don't need a huge size of that, but that doesn't mean you should dissolve it entirely, instead just trim down the numbers and size to a degree that's just good enough to serve as threats deterent but also not financially difficult to keep. The Judicial forces apparently fell off in the later years and made all those mega coporations and power hungry individuals (Such as Viceroy Gunray from Trade Federation) realize how powerless the Republic has become to stop them from overexpanding their monopoly. There always needs to be a symbol of power that can make everyone around you aware that you are not someone to be easily messed with, otherwise everyone around you will just start taking advantage of you.

I wouldnt say the dreadnaught heavy cruiser was the counter part against the harrower class, i'd honestly put a thranta (i guess thats how its spelled) which is essentially a big hammerhead, which was quite mainstream in the republic navy, either that or a valor class (although this last one has a really weird design and weapon emplacement)

Yeah but a large political backdrop is pretty secondary to the story in the present episodes. Although I’d highly recommend the novel Bloodline as a pseudo-prequel to the Sequel Trilogy. It really gets into New Republic politics and is really interesting.

The New Republic canonically demilitarized for exactly the same reasons as the Old Republic did in this video, though. Bloodlines explains this best. I don't think it's really a fault that this was only explained in EU material, either, because... Well, so was the reason the Republic didn't have a standing army when the Clone Wars rolled around, so it'd be a double standard to criticize one but not the other.

My problem with Bloodline is that the New Republic demilitarized despite the fact there are still Imperial splinter faction, each with their own fleet that could still pose a threat, yet they decide to demilitarize. It is a very stupid idea considering your enemy still has functioning ships.

Ian Li True but at that point the largest Imperial remnant had already vanished into the Unknown Regions. The New Republic still had the largest fleet in the galaxy for taking on the few Imperial shards left as shown in Last Shot. With thirty years down the line, I doubt there was much of a threat left so why keep the military? Starkiller Base blindsided the New Republic as a major surprise attack. Assuming the First Order used conventional warfare to invade the galaxy, the New Republic would’ve had time to mobilize their military like the Republic during the Clone Wars.

Ian Li I think the new trilogy could have capitalized on that demilitarization by showing Leia trying to convince system governments to voluntarily support the central military/government and struggling to find that support. Her also believing that the First Order remained a huge threat.

@@jhonnoilcringeincarnato8593 I can totally agree on that one, I think that Weyland Yutani comes in at a close second, or at least compared to the T-800, because lets be real, as much as I, or anyone else likes David and Walter as characters, they aren't beating a T-1000, or a T-X, or a T-3000... ever... (unless they are given massive amounts of plot armor) The institute I have a sort of problem with when it comes to combat since they are only shown in games, and are therefore stat based, so you can't really get an accurate picture of how strong they really are, I haven't seen too much when it comes to Cyberlife, but I wouldn't be surprised that they aren't super OP, although they can definitely take more abuse than a normal human, and until I have seen otherwise, I'd say they're at the bottom of that list, When it comes to being like humans, I'd say the best is Cyberlife, because look at them, then the Institute, as some of their synths don't even know that they are synths, and walk, talk, and socialize just like any other person, then a VERY close third with Weyland Yutani, as some of their androids have been shown to develop emotions and desires, and finally, SkyNet, since they tend to just be killing machines, although if they are set to read-and-write, then they can develop emotions and understandings, although this usually doesn't happen as they are usually set to read-only,

The only exception of the military disbandment was when the Stark Hyperspace war came into play. Senator Tarkin, I forgot from where he was from probably Dantooine, created illegally a Republic Army and Navy, only to be decimated and on the second attack on Stark's planet, early Lucerhulks were used

I really like the First Order's Resurgent-class Star Destroyer. Though, I do think that it either shouldn't be seven kilometers long or shouldn't be touted as the First Order's main line warship. But, I have to give this match-up to our "holy boi".

@@adamredmayne1326 Right?! I was genuinely enamoured with the Resurgent-class Star Destroyer back when I first saw it in the trailers back in 2014. I absolutely agree that those shots with it were amazing. I can agree with your proposed length for the Resurgent-class. But, I'm actually of the mind that there should've been a complete role-reversal and that the First Order should've been a small, militant group that adopted many of the tactics of the Rebel Alliance. In my mind, I saw the Imperial remnant group conducting hit and run attacks against the burgeoning New Republic while having to rely mostly on outdated Imperial hardware and their "navy" consisting of small boys (the equivalent of destroyers and frigates in the real-world). But, most importantly, instead of the First Order creating a superweapon in Starkiller Base, they simply had a massive shipyard that was beginning to churn out Resurgent-class Star Destroyers and the like.

Reminds me of the Holy Roman Empire. The emperor has no own forces, but can call upon the nobility each with their own, small armies, to form one latge army in times of war. The system kind of works as long as there is a balance in, and something to unite the, nobility. But its also a recipe for infighting and low level civil wars.
