The Empire didn't commit to the Tarkin Doctrine right. They designed based on it, but then they didn't use those designs optimally. The system of "Iron fist in velvet glove" would have suited them well, but too often they refused to use the iron fist where it should have been, and overused it other places when a softer touch would have served their ends better. Example: The Death Star should have been used thus: Escorted by a large blockading fleet and several Interdictors, it would arrive at a planet, the fleet would blockade it, and an ultimatum would be delivered: "We know there are rebels and insurrectionists here. To those of you who wish to prove your loyalty to the Empire, you have one week to bring all of them to us. If you refuse, or if you refuse to submit to the Empire, we will be forced to destroy this planet and end this threat to the safety of Imperial citizens throughout the galaxy." Then, either the prison ship is filled up with rebels turned in by their own neighbors who care more about their friends and family surviving than about politics, or not enough rebels are handed over, and the planet is destroyed. If the planet complies, but one or two cities refuse, a low-power blast sufficient to atomize the offending city alone will suffice. The climate consequences of the bombardment will be a warning to the other population centers to heed the word of the Empire. Don't make threats, make promises. Use the people's own fear and desperation to turn them against the Rebels, whose presence threatens them all. When wielded properly, that fear would make worlds police themselves. Used clumsily, it only causes more uprisings. . With regards to the soft power or 'velvet glove' that the Empire seems to have neglected, even as an autocracy they needed to build a reputation of being stern but fair if they were to gain real loyalty throughout the galaxy. Instead they ended up casting themselves as draconian and vindictive, responding with overwhelming measures when they weren't called for. . The problem was, basically, they needed to appear unassailable while remaining aware of (and protecting against) the flaws and weaknesses present. Instead the commanding officers began to actually *believe* that Imperial power was impervious and scoff at flaws or weaknesses, and that headstrong behavior cost them the war.
@tba1135 жыл бұрын
Agreed. It's a world-changing event to have an artificial moon capable of vaporizing your entire planet show up in orbit and make demands, and it should feel that way. Since the DS-1 was so expensive and resource-intensive that it could only ever be a "crown jewel of the fleet" sort of limited-run design, its deployment would be reserved for situations where the planetary governor was either questionable or had already defied Imperial rule. Why a career politician, no matter how ruthless, was put in charge of such a military project, I fear I will never understand.
@trebacca95 жыл бұрын
@Joseph Sosa Precisely. It's not enough to destroy the defiant, one must also reward the subservient. Best of all, if one can arrange it so that the reward is subtle and broad, they associate it with the whole of the Empire, not just with the superior who granted it. That builds loyalty to the Empire itself, not just to a commander or a governor.
@tba1135 жыл бұрын
@Joseph Sosa Not only that, but if you have to pick one (and decide to opt for "be feared" as Machiavelli recommended in that instance), the important thing is to avoid being _hated._ Both Palpatine and Tarkin seem to have forgotten this, and decided to just lash out at the first provocation to prove their point. It's not terribly complicated to be feared but not hated, even though it might sound like it on the surface; building a reputation for being tough but fair is all you really need to do. By way of example, a number of New Republic worlds decided enough was enough, and went so far as to join the Imperial Remnant during the Caamas Document crisis in Legends for exactly this reason. The Empire might be unyielding, but it was demonstrably a more stable guardian of law and order than either the corrupt and arthritic Old Republic, or the free-for-all of the New Republic.

@@tba113 "Why a career politician, no matter how ruthless, was put in charge of such a military project, I fear I will never understand." This is a common flaw throughout history. Military victories are a powerful political tool both for those in charge and the generals themselves. Marcus Licinius Crassus had a fair amount of military experience, but the campaign that got him killed was an attempt to match the victories of his political rivals. The first man put in charge of the Army of the Potomac, Irvin McDowell, was a career officer with close ties to the top military leaders and politicians of the time. He had no field experience and was totally unsuited to lead an army in battle. Politics can't be divorced from military decision making, because military force is a political tool.

My goodness, this conversation got off track. For the record, there are a ton of different scenarios in which a civilian revolt can go down. You can have a small, localized revolt, but if the numbers are comparable to the Revolutionary War and 5% of the people took up armed rebellion, things would be very different. Plus you need to factor in what the situation was leading up to the revolution, what would the economic and political effects of any given rebellion would be, how morale is on both sides, the ideologies involved, what foreign powers might intervene to help or distract the government, and so forth. There's no one single way in which such a rebellion goes down. I've talked with many military people about this, though, and the general consensus among them is that if an armed rebellion rose with more capital than the military, they would be able to resist a tyrannical government.

Remember that even though Palpatine declared himself Emperor at the end of the Clone Wars, the Senate was kept around and had at least some power and prestige to it. Leia was using her status as the Senator for Alderaan to get out of trouble (Vader's comment on "you weren't on any mercy mission this time") and when Tarkin tells his command staff on the Death Star that the Emperor has officially dissolved the Senate there is at first worry about how they will run the Empire without the Senate. So until the Death Star was operational there were some democratic vestiges kept around if only as window dressing for the various member worlds. Of course once Alderaan is destroyed the mask is gone and anyone that was fooling themselves into thinking that things weren't so bad now had their noses rubbed in the truth. And then the Death Star is destroyed and everyone realizes how precarious the Empire's house of cards is and the Rebellion starts to grow even larger...

The main issue of Palpatine's Empire was due to the fact he had no care for how the people would achieve their ranks as long as they would bring results. A Moff could easily have thousand of emperial soldiers lives sacrificed over a pointless assault in order the achieve a victory, Palpatine would still reward the victory rather than berate them for their reckless act for the sake of a promotion and better standing. Another point which was made in this video is the lack of line of succession, Palpatine was too arrogant to believe he could die and thus didn't set up a clear line of succession should he die which would have prevented a massive power vaccum that caused the empire to fracture in multiple factions with only a few actually wanting to restore the Empire as it was. The other issue is the focus on fear alone to keep the people in line, fear is a powerful emotion and powerful deterrent but only lasts so long, eventually people aren't afraid anymore, especially when you consider how aliens were treated under imperial rules, an enemy who has nothing to lose is an extremely dangerous enemy. allowing the xenophobic nature of humans was also a huge undoing on him, had aliens been accepted just as well as any other humans, many worlds wouldn't see any reason to join the rebellion ensuring that the Rebellion itself would only remain a small faction and remain branded as nothing more than a terrorist group seeking to overthrow the Empire over petty reasons. So no, it wasn't the fault of the empire itself, it was how Palpatine built the chain of command and how one could rise above their station not through merit but through trickery and betrayal, which doesn't make for a strong empire but a flimsy and fractured empire. Everyone pulls in different direction rather than aim for a common goal.

Takedrugskillabear I’m only speculating here, but I’d assume that if Palpatine, or anyone else, had any kind of successor in mind, it would be Darth Vader. Of course we all know how that turned out...
@jaymikevillanueva12125 жыл бұрын
Nailed it. The Imperial Civil War was proof of that weakness. You get incompetent Moffs or Warlords that are too power-hungry to not have a common goal in destroying the Rebellion. The Empire's system of government and chain of command is set to fail because Palpatine never considered to have anyone to replace him and the Empire - as a whole -was meant to be an extension of himself. It took Gilad Pelleaon to become a head of state to hold The Empire together when many warlords and moffs failed.

I need to keep the Tarkin Doctrine in the forefront of my mind whenever I'm watching The Force Awakens. It was easy to wonder why the First Order was attempting the Fatally-Flawed Superweapon approach for a third time, but as you point out, it's not the dumbest thing in the world to build something that can intimidate the whole galaxy into submission. It's kind of a necessity if you want to suddenly surge out of the shadows to galactic domination in one swift move. Anything less and the New Republic probably would have gotten wise in time to stop whatever was happening. Add to that the facts of the destruction of the New Republic fleet and its seat of government, and it was a pretty shrewd move to build Starkiller. I guess it was just tricky to try and process that thought in the theaters when you're also trying to keep up with what's going on on screen.

Jack Sprack weird cause most of the time I usually find rebel/resistance fans acting like douches or authoritarian like despite being a fan of the rebels/resistance. I mean for crying out loud this is a fictional universe that isn’t real and shouldn’t be taken seriously in any way regardless of what it’s based on. If you look for excuses to attack people for having different viewpoints or for being fans of characters/factions that aren’t the same as yours then sorry but you’re no different than the real life equivalents of Nazis/facists/communists etc, plain and simple.
@neomcdoom4 жыл бұрын
Gabriel Tejada I think that if someone gets all giddy about an authoritarian regime of masked, goose-stepping soldiers that oppress people in the name of a dictator, it says something about them.
@gabrieltejada16974 жыл бұрын
Jack Sprack ironic considering most of the imperial fans that I’ve met were genuinely nice and down to earth people while rebel/resistance fans tend to be the opposite. The moment you disagree with them it suddenly becomes a fight or they resort to personal attacks and THAT says a lot about them. Joker is one of my favorite characters of all time right next to Deadpool but does that mean I’m gonna do what they did especially what the Joker does? Hell no, not because it’s wrong and crazy but also unlike you guys I actually know how to separate reality from fiction and I don’t allow it to influence me like some new born child that can be molded into anything. Reality and fiction are two completely different worlds regardless of what the fictional ones are inspired by, I wish more Star Wars fans specifically the crazy rebel fans would stop treating their fellow fans (regardless of their faction preference) like little children that need to be guided because they can’t think for themselves, most of us are fully grown adults who can understand the difference between right and wrong as well as separate reality from fiction but yet you guys can’t seem to grasp that concept which is sad.

Imperial Rome managed the states or other groups on its frontiers largely with the threat of retaliation. The legions certainly could move around and deliver that - to several at a time. When they faced continual pressure from _enough_ periphery threats, it was too much. It's a similar instance of needing to rely on the threat of violence when you don't have enough violence to serve every potential customer at a time.

The Empire should have done something like 5,000 ISDs and 10,000 Venators (Since Venators cost 1/2 as much as ISDs). Then a fleet would carry enough starfighters to repel a band of rebels and it would also be a phycological weapon because the sheer number of TIEs could strike fear into the enemies of the Empire.
@someguy37115 жыл бұрын
I think that does not include all the various craft needed to make it a carrier, same problem tie's are only worth while in superior numbers or against weaker opponents and you likely run into a scenario where having too many aircraft at one time is too inefficient. A lot of this could be dismissed as Lucas's lazy writing/not studying naval history.

Even if you think the Empire needed superweapons, the Death Star was still a waste of resources. You don't need to disintegrate a planet to wreck it, just slagging the crust would be sufficient (and just as horrible). I admit Starkiller base would have been very efficient as a terror weapon (although giving it to the First Order in ep.7 was ridiculous and a tired rehash of ep.4 IMO).
@somewhatstrange20975 жыл бұрын
They could recoup quite a lot of resources by mining the remains of the vapourised planet. One could imagine that after a while the Imperial economy could end up becoming dependent on the resources gained by blowing up planets, resulting in them secretly implementing a quota a planets to be destroyed each year in order to avoid economic collapse.
@azazaz46275 жыл бұрын
There's a theory that the Death Star was actually meant to combat the Vong, hence why they were building multiples of the DS, and more spheres were under construction elsewhere. It was just built under the guise that it was FOR the Rebels. Sure, the Vong was introduced after the movies, but it gives a nice other theory instead of an insane superweapon built for just rebels.

So I have a theory. This is inspired by an actual scientific theory, which is that the laws of physics are different in other areas of the universe, or at least could be. I believe the hyperspace anomaly is (or again, at least could be) an example of this phenomenon, one where parts of the galaxy border I something similar to that. The Star Wars region of the universe has laws of physics that allow for interdimensional phasing or shifting for things like hyperspace travel and also create drag in space. The hyperspace anomaly is perhaps a region of space which does not allow for any travel faster than light in a vacuum, (although likely all or most other weird stare wars physics is still in play, people don't spontaneously combust upon entry because of different physics). this would both likely be natural, rather than created as everyone assumes it would be. I don't understand why something like this anomaly couldn't be natural, otherwise, why would it have gaps? Creating something like this, especially if it is a region with different physics, would be far more more impressive than anything else in the galaxy. Anyway, what do you all think of my idea? P.S. I really love your videos, I am now a Star Wars supergeek thanks to you. your videos are really interesting and I think you usually do a great job analyzing and ranking in your galactic vs series.
@mill27125 жыл бұрын
I actually like the idea. I would just imagine how explorers and such would react to this anomaly and attempt to try to beat it either with trying to develop new tech which allows some type of near FTL/FTL, though much more limited and slower than using hyperspace or using someone who is sensitive to the force if said person it can use it in the areas of anomaly. (Unless there is a point where you went so far out the galaxy's influence force powers cease to work.)
@stardragon85855 жыл бұрын
@@NightRaven-lh1bfI didn't even know that a hyperdrive bomb is a thing, actually. Also, you're right about messing with hyperdrive (which is likely to land you in Otherspace if you mess up). I hadn't even considered that and it could possibly do the trick. The gaps are just evidence that it wasn't meant to be a barrier if it was in fact created. Honestly, to me, this makes more sense as a natural occurrence.
@stardragon85855 жыл бұрын
@@mill2712 The force wielder idea interesting, but I don't necessarily understand it. I will say it would take a lot of concentration to take your laws of physics somewhere that the laws of physics are different.
@mill27125 жыл бұрын
@@stardragon8585 What I am saying is that it when someone wishes to leave the main galaxy knowing the hyperspace oddity is there they could use force sensitive people to guide the way. Like the "Skywalkers" in the new canon book "Thrawn Alliances." (See StarWars Explained's channel for more clarity. It's a fairly recent vid so it shouldn't be too hard to find on his channel) or force sensitive guides such as the Jedi explorers in the legends book "Outbound Flight." But my theory is the further you leave the host galaxy, the less in tune one is with the force. Go far enough and the force may only work with the beings and material you brought with you, you can only use the force internally, or even not at all. I also believe hyperspace has something to do with the force as well and within the galaxy it allows for a very fast, precise and stable FTL travel. However the further from the galaxy you go the harder it is to use and the less distance you can cover. And if you go far enough from the host galaxy it becomes so inept, one can only travel a few times the speed of light at best, at worst you can only go lightspeed, maybe not even lightspeed or it becomes very unpredictable such as going distances too short or too far than what you wanted, you go to a different plain of existence (Legends had something called otherspace.), or it just loses it's stability and preciseness as if it were like "The Warp" like in Warhammer 40000. Minus the chaos 'deamons' (Or not.) Also all hyperdrive capable machines have a navigational computer or astro-mech that allows for precise travel through hyperspace. Because the intergalactic void is uncharted and mostly empty excluding objects formed outside of/ejected from the galaxy at large, if you wanted to make a jump (If jumps are possible.) you would have to calculate, scan and do small skips with periods of rest each and every time lest you hit something or get stuck in hyperspace/sent to another dimension. I also have a theory that the force might have it's limits despite what Jedi and Sith might tell you. We don't know if it only works in their galaxy, the surrounding cluster/supercluster of galaxies that are near by the Star Wars galaxy, the force has a source outside of the galaxy/galaxies but affects all within the area or if the force only works when your in a galaxy. (Whether it's in the local area or across the universe is unknown. If across the universe or a large portion of it then the force isn't really that limited.)
@stardragon85855 жыл бұрын
@@mill2712 you've clearly given a lot of thought to hyperspace. Personally, all I know about Star wars legend is from this channel, I am more of a cannon person myself, as funding all those legends books at the library is difficult. I wasn't even aware that new cannon books had been made yet.

I think if the empire was ran right. AKA Palatine not being an idiot. It would be an more effective and successful government then any republic. As faction gets bigger. Then you have a massive problem with getting things done. One big reason why the republic has fallen a few times. Is because of how long it takes to get things done. Get Luke as his apprentice He didn't build the death star like the first one in order to spread fear and have a super weapon, he actually build it as bait because he knew that the Alliance could not afford for the empire to have such a super weapon which could just obliterate every planet that decides to become independent. He than made it look as though they had a chance just to get them there on his terms. It was almost the perfect plan. The emperors only fault was his arrogance thinking that the ewoks were lesser live forms who couldn't harm him. And of course he underestimated Darth Vader.
