We are at the end of the season for the Garden Center and the Butterfly House. These are the last of the caterpillars for the year. When they emerge from their chrysalis' we release them to head south for the winter.

What a wonderful scene ! We are motivated to add 2 Asclepias in the yard, along with our present Butterfly bush, which blooms its head off for soooo long. We see many visiting Monarchs already. Hope the birds do not feed on too many caterpillars out in the open. Keep on with this amazing work, and Bless you 🌈.

Amazing greenhouse. I used to raise Monarch butterflies when I was a kid, I used the native milkweed plants with the wide leaves. Those plants are not as attractive and only get three to four feet tall, but it was easy to locate the eggs aand the catepillars on them. We have it growing roadside on my current street and I just harvested a bunch of seeds which I will cold stratify and plant next spring so I can have the milkweed plants growing in my yard near the flowering plants that the Monarchs like to frequently visit. Can you provide the name of the bushes in your greenhouse that grow big with the slender leaves that have the catepillars all over them? I like the appearance of those and would be interested to see if I can grow them. I am also starting an effort on my property to replace portions of my lawn with wildflowers, grasses and host plants for butterflies and moths. I think we need to reestablish the “network” of these native species of plants and trees that have been depleted by urban development in order to restablish the population of these beautiful creatures. I still have my field guides from when I was a kid, and we used to have many more varieties of butterflies and moths. Diversity in the vegetation around us is a good thing. Thanks for posting this video!

Heidi, if you didn't have the plants and everything inside an enclosure, would birds be eating the caterpillars??? Just trying to figure out if a set up could be successful if it isn't inside a structure? Surely they multiply in the open wild. Just curious 🤔. Growing up in rural Illinois, I always remember tons of monarch butterfly every year. But since moving to the South East, I only see a handful a year. One would think that would be opposite because of the warmer climate.
