The reason someone would bury an old boiler is that it may contain asbestos. Handle with great care and a respirator!

I have a possible explanation. Diesel fuel starts gelling when it's below freezing, the boiler might have been there to heat the fuel so it was pumpable to put in the train.
@Thunderer0872Ай бұрын
No I think it was after the railway closed nothing to do with trains. It would be to heat water for the toilet block as seen behind Gill, it's not a railway item.

At first I wondered if it was a housing for a mechanism for one of those signal signs. I see I'm not the first one to suggest saving the old brick. I might have even kept the cinder block sections intact, and just rolled them over to the fence. I re-use a lot of old materials for my garden. BIG STEEL will be so exciting! But nothing like clearing out old greenery and junk to pass the time.

This is what I (an engineer) call "reverse engineering". :) There is a piece of what certainly looks like asbestos insulation visible in places like 7:09. Since you're outdoors it's not a huge hazard to any of you, but it's still something that probably should be encapsulated in a couple of big bags and disposed of in a hazardous waste tip. I'm leaning towards the notion that the boiler was used to keep diesel fuel liquid during cold weather. The wiring and relays visible at 4:27 are from the early to mid 20th century -- much newer than the station itself, and appropriate for the diesel era. It wouldn't surprise me if you eventually find some plumbing running from the old boiler towards the tracks and platform. I think I remember a water source there, and there was perhaps a siding where engines might have been topped off with water and -- later -- diesel fuel.
@williamparker3765Ай бұрын
That looks like it was an oil storage tank, you say there was a boiler outside the back door, so could it have been the oil tank for that boiler?
@philtucker1224Ай бұрын
I think you are on the right track, in the 1930s hot water boilers were generally cast and oil/diesel tanks were quite large and mainly welded sheet steel.
@Thunderer0872Ай бұрын
I would hazard a guess that after the station closed and those toilet blocks were used by the new owners and that boiler was used to heat the water for that block of toilets and shower if it had a shower? in the 70s or 80s?
@Goldenoldie49Ай бұрын
Was that asbestos I saw sticking out of the boiler or fibreglass?

That appeared to be the surplus brick and stone uesd on the original building. It probably served a double purpose of camouflage for the boiler and as a place to keep it available for future needs. For example, if someone were to renovate the old station. Not having it can make matching masonry a little harder, plus you have to buy it. That was a free stack of brick and stone.
