What We Know About India's Failed Lunar Landing

Chandrayaan 2 was a highly ambitious mission for ISRO, and while the orbiter is working the lander failed during the last few moments before touch down. Based on the handful of public statements, and images from mission control it looks like braking from orbital velocity worked correctly, but the transition to fine control for descent may have resulted in a tumbling spacecraft which impacted the surface at about 100m/sec. However I hope more information comes along soon.

Well, that, plus making refinements between tries, so that one doesn't try the exact same thing over and over while expecting different outcomes, which is madness. True "failure" is when someone either stops trying, or stops learning from mistakes; either one would be failure. As long as one learns something new from each mistake, and alters one's behavior to compensate, mistakes are the source of all learning and all success.

Honestly, this was heart breaking to watch. For a country that has accelerated its space program primarily in the last 10 years this was more of a win than a loss. But watching their cheers turn into puzzled faces of disbelief was difficult. What the U.S. folks tend to forget, or weren't even alive for, was how many, many failures we went through before getting anything right. India is a country full of super smart people. Just give them time. And they'll be landing on that hunk of green cheese before you know it.

Considering you could see the rockets take off, see the flying off, the live broadcasts, the planned speech for Apollo 11 failing, all the systems and ships, resources, and all that poured into making shit that actually works. And that in 69 it was practically impossible, even more expensive, and easy to disprove to fake the landing on a stage. Using things they didnt know about the moon back then to fake the landing on the moon. People have working computers from the Apollo missions, they have all the programming that's required to do it. And you can *see* it. Sorry buddy, you're the one drinking the Kool-aid. Specifically the one people looking for some ungodly complex grand conspiracy where it doesnt exist and making a big deal out of it kind. The biggest thing NASA has covered up (for admittedly good reason) was the plan to nuke the moon to brag about the biggest dicks before they decided on just landing on it first.

My analysis: There are four sections of propulsion engine inside the Vikram Lander which were supposed to be * turned off* (except one) during rough braking phase/stage of 10 minutes to get deceleration of the speed for Vikram lander. We could compare both these two data of speed with graph (Trajectory Graph) and nominal speed (which was supposed to be 1.6 meters/second for soft landing). But they (propulsion engines) all didn't (probability). Also, there are three decelerations engines. On that note, due to start of decelerations engines and continuously running of propulsions engines, an unbalanced force developed on the Vikram Lander ; and as a result it turns *upsidedown* (kinds of spinning) for some moment. Since the Vikram Lander which has already on high momentum gets abnormalities( or kinds of malfunctions) on the parts transciever and transponder and unable to land safely. But it is for sure that Vikram Lander will not crush or destructions because Moon has low *gravity* which is apprx. 1.6m per sq.second. On all those analysis , we could conclude that this is the reason, Orbiter and Vikram Lander unable to link or communicate the signals. But lets hope , ISRO has already able to locate the Vikram Lander and trying to send the signals. In fact, NASA also trying to send the signals to Vikram Lander through Orbiter(since orbiter is working properly). We have total 14 days to complete the mission. . At last, Proud of ISRO ! Failure is the key of successes !!!

Great work from the indians! I got much respect for their work. And isn`t it remarkablee that they did the whole project for the cost of one NASA animation showing how NASA imagines going to the moon in twenty years... Or if you want, - were there fifty years ago... Talking of which... Would love it, since the indians put on superior cameras on their orbiter, which is 40 miles up, could take photos of the Apollo landing site so there would be some third party independent verification of NASA`s claim...

This mission 🚀consisted of the Orbiter 🛰️(with 7-7.5 years of life span) and lander(Vikram) + rover(Pragyan) with 14 days of life span. Orbiter 🛰️ is orbiting around the moon 🌒 and will keep scanning and sending photos of moon surface for next 7-7.5 years. Although , ISRO lost contact from lander Vikram but still this mission has achieved it's 95% of it's initial objectives. Btw , lander has been found using Orbiter and ISRO is still trying to contact with it . Btw , Soft landing is really a complex task and to land rover on dark side of moon where no country hasn't reached yet was surely a difficult task but ISRO still tried it's best , So .. Scott, I am almost on the same page as you interpreted, and had the same gut feeling since the lander crashed. Yet I fail to understand the interpretation that the lander must have toppled. I am sure that the lander must have had several azimuth detectors (spirit level, gyro..whatever) that could say if the lander was upside down, Even petty drones have that.

Some Updates - ISRO says that have taken an image, using the high resolution camera on the orbiter, (note that this not a thermal image as some reports suggest, the thermal camera has much too low resolution). Given the size of the lander and the resolution of the camera this will be less than 10 pixels across, making claims that it's merely sitting at a bad angle dubious at best. They have not shared this image so there's no way to know how accurate their claims are. The Lunar Reconaissance Orbiter passed over the site and could not resolve any image of the lander, so either the lander is smashed into many small pieces or was in shadow, either way the lander is dead by now, even ignoring the velocity data. The only reliable velocity data for the impact comes from the doppler trace, and this showed no significant deceleration therefore the lander crashed at 200-400km/h. This is what they mean when they say 'hard landing'. Given the high lateral velocity it likely bounced and rolled across the surface before coming to a stop. The transmitter cut off at impact, it's likely that everything else broke at the same time and communications will not be esablished.

They claim that the lander is on its four stands but tilted and in one peice!!... Now according to your estimation it crashed at the speed between 200-400km/h.. If it crashed at this speed than it is not possible for the lander to maintain its balance on its four stands as first impact of it on lunar surface would probably break its 3-4stands at that speed even if we consider the low gravity of moon!!.. So it may not have crashed that hard as you think!!
