Sadly it already is very much so and has been for some years now, in all honesty I miss winXP & Win7, but even when Win7 was fully supported when I did a search it was already showing me what I was just talking about with family or friends. It's going to be even more, the thing is Linux is still not supported by the large majority of program developers nor the gaming community devs, a few here and there but this is where we are today and the future.

@@MelodicTurtleMetal The point being, bold colors were added. It was made to look professional, too. I don't see Windows 8 to 11 looking that way. Actually, when XP was often called "The funny looking Clown Suite for DOS." by people that didn't like computers having a GUI. I though it was a funny statement but I didn't use it because I was still very heavily involved with Amiga 4000 and Cyberstorm PPC at the time, and Workbench 3.1 looked great with NewIcons. Yes, Windows 2000/NT weren't meant to be pretty. They were meant to get the job done..a business interface that was meant to be fast for the hardware of the time.

I loved Windows Classic UI from the Windows 98 days and would love to see that make a return. I don't see a reason to have ever removed it as an option for people who wanted it. Also, another thing Windows 98 got right and is something you touched on, installing features during setup that you wanted and not installing those you didn't want. Sure, it had a typical selection in which it would just install whatever was preset but you also had an advanced mode where you could go through and check items you wanted and uncheck those you didn't want to your heart's content. They can make it happen, they just need to give more power back to the end user.

I agree with you that we need classic GUIs and compatibility with all previous hardware. If AI were logical and not hardware-bound, drivers could adapt automatically. My reason for not upgrading to newer versions is that I get lost when I'm looking for familiar paths to the functions I use or need. And I know what you're going to say, use the search engine or make shortcuts. It's not as easy as you think if your first language is not English. Basically, everything remains in English and the search engine does not find expressions from other languages. And I'll find a way out of the labyrinth in games, but in Windows I'll get lost because they'll move the thing I'm looking for under another branch, chapter, or it won't be accessible in the new image at all.

new feature prolly be that your wallpaper cannot be changed, only for ADD placements, so you get the privelages of seeing things you dont need in your home. Premium subscription to use file explorer and other programs. even more rounded corners, cause it would be shame to get virtuial papercut on your virtual documents. Clippy will return and cant be turned off, and wil lbe ontop of all games you play. All jokes aside (hopefully what I said was jokes and not predictions), microsoft realy shouldnt limit the customization of windows UI, cause its not microsoft that knows how YOUR workflow is best, its you the user itself knowing whats best for you. The Windows 11 Dev Insider STILL havent got the ungroup and full titles in taskbar back, but seems seconds in tray clock came back, so thats nice. I would LOVE to see Windows 98SE UI and all other UIs for Windows 10 and 11. Win98SE was and still is my favorite UI, due to how simple and easy it is. And Bluescreen messages would be realy handy to get back, so you can actualy look up what the error was, instead of PC just restarting.

@@Steve30x May I suggest you check your grammar. There are ways to get a lot of games for Windows 11 to work with Windows 7, and I've been doing it for a while. The way you type, and since you're a pretty hard-core gamer - you come across that way, if I'm incorrect let me know, you are probably okay with the tiles menu. Metro. I enjoyed seeing the new Windows logo, but after the install and seeing the "new menu" it wasn't long until I killed that partition for other stuff. Good for you if you can handle that stuff, I just couldn't. Way to flat and bland for me. I have made a Windows 7 ISO also. Added all the updates, and some other programs that I use often to the install. Later, I modified it for USB 3 when I bought a new AMD Motherboard and went Ryzen. I've noticed the opposite, a lot of games will work with Windows 7, but some require some altering to make it happen. Which is why I've been slowly making Windows 11 look like 7, but it's challenging since the Icons are to bland and flat. I won't use Edge or Chrome - I do not like snooping from companies. DuckDuckGo is my search engine. So, Windows 11 is a little more easy to use since I've made changes (Start11), but the Settings are a mess. I don't enjoy typing everything into a Search Bar just to find something. It's as though people who don't go outside, aren't around animals, and don't use their voices to talk to people are the ones doing all this stuff since Windows 8 to 11. I know many people still that won't be getting a new computer any time soon, especially if they aren't 'gamers', because of the very strong dislike of Windows 8 to 10 and 11. I also know many who like Android vs Apple because Apple is very restrictive of personal data - but they don't want their Windows to look like a tablet. Using Avast is all the security I need, as well as security with my Router. I can usually leave the Virus checking off since I'm very aware of what's on my system and I haven't come across an actual virus in years. It takes a little bit for all the processing for installing Windows 7 that I've modified but I haven't had to reinstall in over 3 years. I also keep a couple backups of my Dual Boot system..so...it's all doing very well. I agree, get in there and change, stop some processes. Windows is becoming more bloated. I disabled/removed all the Voice Assistance junk and more from Windows 11. :-) Nothing is "perfect" and I don't care how many clueless people use that word incorrectly so often, it won't be perfect..and I'm okay with that.

Also Having an option to use a different start menu ( choice to use new or older start menu ) would have made people happier to use Windows 11. The right click menus are the other problems. I don't want to have to set a plethora of video and audio file types, just to have separate default apps for music player and video player. It's so obvious why Microsoft made it so difficult for people to switch defaults apps from Microsoft apps. They can't sell people's data if they can't track them on their own apps. Apparently, Microsoft claimed the reason was to give people more options, but it's clearly BS, because Windows 10 also allowed to set file type defaults. How many people actually know enough about the plethora of different file types, to set them individually?

They couldn’t deliver good enough performance on WinFS, plus there were tons of compatibility problems. Also they realised that rewriting ALL of the UI into buggy WPF wasn’t possible within a year or two, plus GPUs with stable DirectX acceleration used 24/7 were rather an exception back in 2003. The good new we got PowerShell (project Monad), WPF (codename Avalon) was finally released, and parts of WinFS landed in SQL Server as FILESTREAM. The other thing is that the promise of WinFS was wrong. Apps do NOT need a central database for “things”, it puts ridiculous restrictions on what and how they can operate.

Never been a better time to switch to Linux as today! Just do your research and try a few distros. It's not that complicated for casual users once it's set up. I even upgraded my mom's PC to Linux and she has no problem with it (she mostly just uses the browser). Linux is not only more secure than Windows but has no telemetry spying or random reboots from forced updates. You the user is the one in total control! 💪

I've been a Linux user for 20 years and this is misleading. Yes, Linux is a lot better then it was 20 years ago. However, as a Linux user and a tech that helps users on a daily basis, it's not for everyone and it absolutely is harder then Windows. I've had to deal with the aftermath of this several times. A grandson that loads Linux on his grandma's computer because he says it's better than Windows but then she can't load her Hallmark card creator program that she bought at Walmart and the computer ends up sitting in the corner not used. Windows is a consumer operating system. Linux isn't. Linux is an extremely powerful kernel that literally runs the internet. But operating systems based on the Linux kernel are enthusiast operating systems. The more they are tailored towards the consumer market the less Linux they become and the less attractive they become to people who like Linux for what it is.

I installed reputable antivirus software, turned off all updates, only access the internet "now and again," print documents as required and of course, playing music off external hard drives. So far I've been able to hold on to the things I like and work and embrace the new stuff that are nice to include in that list. The thing with android is that you can completely change the launcher. Usually when I upgrade I also install the same launcher and things are back to the way I want it. Hopefully something similar for windows 12 will happen. Once and for all, the appearance, aka Theme, Skin, Mode, User Interface, etc. is NOT the OPERATING SYSTEM. It is the cosmetic facade, linked to touch screen or mouse or even good old fashioned keyboard shortcuts integration which makes things happen behind the curtain, which in turn has a display projected from behind the facade to provide convenient visual feedback on your inputs. Apple perfected the Pavlovian drool response to lush, pretty, design school appeal, yet my old clumsy fingers access and move things at least 5 times more slowly, with a touch screen that either fails to respond, or mistakes my movement for another command. I suspect old pros can navigate even faster through typed code, but my point is that marginal improvements in any OS need not require relearning the input muscle memory, just because the design principle is built on the dubious logic, that more changes convey the notion that the customer is getting "more," of something or other, whether or not they asked for it, or even preferred some previous element as easier, more intuitive, or adequate for its task. Computers, like cars, and most other products, are sold with "packages," no longer separate options - imagine an OS upgrade that let users pick only the features they wanted, or at least made deselection simple and up front. A Win XP interface could sit on top of Win 11 security just fine, but out of sight feels as if nothing has changed, so why buy new, pay again and again? Just ask the MBA idiots who made touchscreens the interface in new vehicles, which has dramatically increased accidents now that dials that one could develop tactile memory to adjust without taking one's eyes off the road are replaced by an ever-changing menu cycle demanding a driver's visual attention. Idiocracy rules. AI? Artificial Intelligence = Genuine Stupidity. Proof that the world of Commerce reigns above even politics, and Fanboys and gals compete, not to make systems more efficiently do what the users want, but to make the slickest, trendiest, addictive adult toys to drain even more hours a day from average people, increasingly depressed yet bored and disengaged from actual WORK. Perfect, the notion that AI will magically be "creative" for you, so you won't have expend any energy or thought to the real world we increasingly have less and less control over.

Wow, Will finally return the panel to the top. In fact, it is high time to separate the tray from active programs. Although your nostalgia can be understood) About "like" android 12 is focused on mobile devices such as thin touchscreen laptops, tablets and even mobiles) soon ARM will be everywhere. If the GPT does not rise XD. What actually boils down is the fact that the place with the buttons for switching modes and the sound slider, on laptops there is still brightness and that's all. How much free space could at least move the mixer there, or at least leave the possibility to include it in the settings. So much quick access and still have to download Power toys.
