On a practice level IT doesn't seem worth shipping a vehicle,but on a nostalgic level I can see it.I had a a boat I kept for 30 yrs.Every time I laid eyes on her I fell in love with her beautifull lines,sailing capabilities and joy of sailing .,so I get it.I plan on moving to portugal my self and was pondering on shipping my 2018 Toy.rav 4 hybrid.I don't think I will , at 75 I'll get as practical a car as I can find and maybe an electric bike.

Thanks for the details involved in importing a car from US. As for the question was it worth it or Not. It depends. If you are passionate about that specific car it is worth it because there is a lot of emotional value that goes with it. If I was in your situation and even if the car was important to me, I would not have imported it. My reason the cost of move and the head ache involved is way too much. A bulk of that expense you incurred could have gone into new car that will have a lot of years of trouble free use. Noe that you have your Baby Bug Enjoy it and show it off to the crowd.

But keep in mind that new and used cars are quite expensive in PT. At least on the mainland - I don't know how car prices run on the island. You prob couldn't even buy a decent used car in PT for 12k. So maybe it was worth it after all. A new car does not always = no car problems. And I'm sure it's a blast driving that bug around the island.

Thank you, Allen, we saw you on a hit the Road Madeira Video and have been binge watching your videos. My wife and I have mirrored may of your adventures and decisions and trying to make our final trips to make our decision where to go. We had planned on Madeira trip this year, but world events changed our plans. I really appreciate your perspective as you have many of the same requirements and expectations we have. I don't know if I would bring a car given costs, I'm not a collector, just an avid user. I do have things like tools I would like to bring but not such that I would pay twice for the privilege to continue to own used tools. I really like your videos as we finally get to see the island and not just tourist snippets, which captured me but not enough to pull me in, you are pulling me in and showing me the water is just fine. I agree we should just go now, but I'm going to give it until I'm 60 or one bad phone call to pull the RipChord. Only a few years away. I plan to vacation there soon, and also Ecuador, just like you! then make a decision, I agree Costa Rica, Panama, etc. are just too hot. I may keep a retirement home in Texas and rent, maybe we will move back when we get really old, and until then we will let someone else pay for our house. As I am a mechanic and have maintained it for 30 years, it would be impossible to replace it with another vintage car that I would fell comfortable driving. Selling your car in the US and buying a similar one in Europe would have been probably much more relaxing and cost effective. Remember this car is...german, so fairly common in Europe. I m stunned by the price of a 22 ft container. We shipped a car from netherlands to Argentina in 2009 and the price was...1000 Euros for the container only.

OMG! Love the bug! It's exactly the same as what we had and we totally restored it. Then three months later an older man pulled out in front of me in his Lincoln! Totaled it! Poor little blue...fortunately neither my self and my twins were hurt. As a beetle lover I'd say it's totally worth the price and hoops to jump thru to have your car there. I have to point out the obvious: the level or preparation and efforts you invest in your videos for starters make them a pleasure to watch and also implies two things: I would not hesitate to have you as a mechanic (you can easily open a garage for cars like yours: this way you get a place to work on your car "for free"), your capability to produce videos can be easily transferred to let's say another youtube channel or paid video course on mechanic work or any other topic of your choice. I'm planning on watching most if not all of your videos. A couple questions: did you have to do anything to make your car to meet Euro Eco Emission standards or it's just covered by extra fee? You've mentioned the opportunity to bring some of your belongings - if you haven't covered this in previous videos, do you mind to elaborate on that: process, links, visa type?

Thanks for this very informative video. I decided not to bring my car, but in your case, it is worth it if it makes you happy. I would though ask around for a garage to rent, or your car's finish won't last parked outside. Unfortunately, here in the mainland, Portuguese tend to be careless when driving, parking and getting in/out of vehicles. So unless you have plenty of space to park away from others, soon you may see a few dings and scratches, which would be a shame. 🙈A real estate agent could help you find one nearby.

Excellent break down on the cost! You may not remember but I contacted you on another video requesting exactly this sort of information as I/we are in the same situation. On one hand, $12,000 and counting is a high price to pay. I wonder how much of that fee is Pandemic/Inflation related. Websites I read in a Google search say from NYC to Madeira, the cost should be half that. By next year when we are ready, fingers crossed -- the prices may drop. Still .... I think of all the things I can do with that amount of money. One word of advice for frugal people like myself is to be sure -- absolutely sure -- this is a one way trip and that belongings are never returning to the States. ONE QUESTION that hasn't been answered in my research -- is the cost predicated on weight --OR-- cubic feet??? An 8 by 20 foot container is a lot of cubic feet if one is leaving it half empty. My goal is to set up a small farm/Homestead so there's quite a bit of equipment and fencing to bring and I'd cram that box to the ceiling, rather than have to buy everything all over again once on the island, and probably at inflated prices at that! Rambling ... sorry. You've been really helpful and I hope our paths cross one day. Ciao.

And containers are shipped based on cubic feet as well as weight. Therefore you can fill the container to the ceiling as long as it does not weight out. Hope this helps. See you in the future. International shipping has indeed become costly. Shortage of shipping containers, high fuel costs, delays at ports, etc. Who knows if they will ever drop to 'normal' levels again. $12k is a lot, but I think it's about par for the current course.

How much would you have spent finding a replacement in Portugal? How much could you have sold the car for in Chicago? You needed some sort of container anyway. The bug looks like you got it in tip top condition. I suppose you could have found another one and done the work although then you would need tools and a place to do it. For me, I think when I go I am done. Sell everything down to the last screw in my shop. Take a deep look at my future and slowly add back the things I can’t live without. Hopefully it will be dramatically less than what I now have. It will have to be. Eventually I will buy my last car, probably a new one, and the stress could be somewhat less I hope.

I am in the process of renewing my driving licence in the UK because i am now over 70 years old ..To complicate matters i wanted to keep my trailer and mini bus categories due to planned Motorsport activities ..I needed a medical and eye optician tests to prove i am fit to carry on with the status. The forms are confusing but compaired to your quest of the paperwork necessary and costing are a dream.. Would i have left my treasured car behind ..No ! Looking back to when i was 17 and had my first car ,i regret selling that vehicle to this day. In comparison it would be like giving up my dogs so to be able to emigrate.

Was it worth it? Good question. As you seem to think so but your wife not so sure. If you base it just on pure sense of money spent compared to what it would cost to buy a vehicle similar to what you have. ( that figure you did not mention ) did you do that math? Now if and when you want to sell the big there, what will it fetch? That too needs to be determined as it should be part of the equation. Either way if it makes you happy and it will be used for the transportation and antique vehicle banter with whomever to meet, then yes it sounds like a good investment.

When you say the mileage will be limited, is that because there is some sort of limit placed on historic cars in Madeira and what is that limit? I think importing an historic car reduces the registration taxes compared to a newer car, and it reduces the annual road tax too. Is the age limit for historic status 30 years old? Perhaps you can keep us updated on the registration process? I’m glad you managed to jump through the bureaucratic hoops and made it to the Classic show. It is my dream too.

You have 6 months to get to this completed. You are required to surrender your U.S. license to be exchanged for Portugal license. ACP was very helpful with this, and provides other benefits as well.
