I absolutely loved that feature in this video. When I was a PhD student I once grabbed a forgotten orchid from our office floor in the pantry and nursed it back to health. From that moment I became the person to babysit profs' plants when they went on sabbaticals. I however keep moving across continents, so I can never stay with my plants for long. My favorite plants are succulents (maybe because I have to travel a lot for work and they are so fierce on their own).

@@ezmereldagoradesky Thank you! It's wonderful that you have a heart for helping people. You may be able to overcome your aversion to blood but there are also many bloodless options in healthcare like physical, occupational, or speech therapy, clinical psychology, etc. I always thought medicine was for me and got as far as premed at UCLA but ended up very anxious, despite doing well academically. The only time I felt at ease was when I was helping classmates with our homework and they'd tell me I explained it in a way that finally made sense. So after much soul searching, I switched majors, got my master's and teaching credential and became a high school teacher. Not as "prestigious" as medicine, but over 150 teenagers came through my room each day and whether it was preparing them to smash an AP test, supporting English learners, or just providing a safe space for kids having a hard time, I knew I was touching kids' lives in a positive way. In this season of life I've chosen to step away from teaching to focus on family. I love being a human mom, dog mom, and a wife who can hold down the fort to support my husband's demanding career. I get to spend time volunteering in the community and devoting myself to the people I love most. Long story short, there are SO many ways to help people in each stage of life, so whether that is medicine for you or something entirely different, follow your passion and your strengths and you'll find your way.

I’d probably be a pediatrician or podiatrist… maybe a surgeon..? I said: But if you weren’t a doctor at all, what would you be? HE LOOKED LIKE HIS BRAIN HAD FROZEN. HE COULDN’T SPEAK! 6:40 this for me. I almost went into teaching, but went into IT instead and currently in InfoSec. But im in charge of all training and education to our employees which I absolutely love for that reason. Explaining something to people that is generally a pretty scary topic and easing their nerves about the whole thing is something I love. When I started I was Help Desk and i thoroughly enjoyed the role too because I helped people fix problems that for the unsavvy are just really frustrating problems. So even in my roles now, I love the teaching aspect of it.

On the off chance that someone from your team sees this - would you consider doing a video about the documentary "Knocking?" The documentary is actually about Jehovah's Witnesses, but one of the main plotlines is about a father donating a liver to his son. They talk about how it was hard to find a hospital to do it, and it was a very experimental procedure because Witnesses cannot accept blood transfusions. Also, there's a clip of the surgeon just walking through the hospital hallway with a human liver in what looks like a cereal bowl and I so badly need to know what's up with that.

You rock Doctor Hope! What a cool video! Glad to see ophthalmology represented! My dad was one, a long time ago. But things have changed. I went in for a optometrist appointment last week and mentioned my dad was an eye doctor. The optometrist asked "What part of the eye did he specialize in?" I said "Back in my dad's day, they did the WHOLE eye." I think that offended him, though I'm not entirely sure why. It's the truth.

I'm friends with a retired orthopedic surgeon. Now that he has free time, he's pursuing his passion of playing the saxophone, which is how we met. We're in a band together. Gotta say, he rocks!

as a med student, if med school didnt work out my second choice was to actually become a chef too! crazy how there actually are alot of similarities between medicine and the culinary arts. Glad im not the only one who thought this way!

It kind of makes sense that doctors night be good investigators or chefs. I'm an academic doctor (postdoctoral scientist) and there's a lot of parallels between scientific skills and skills of investigators and chefs.

I’m a little surprised no-one said researcher… you don’t get to apply the medical knowledge, but you’re still in medicine (and at the forefront of development). Maybe it’s because we’re still a Dr., just not -of Medicine?
