Funny how he mentioned the smell of the gunpowder .My girlfriend and I had breakfast at a restaurant in fort Walton Beach Florida ,as we were waiting to paying ,there was a group 3-4 , guys in flight suits sitting near the register (I didn't really notice them) then I caught the smell of gun powder ,I said to my girlfriend ,Wow , I guess someone was doing a lot of shooting today . The guys all chuckled , I didn't realize Eglin AFB was a stone throw away , they were all A-10 Pilots.

It is where Doolittle practiced for his Tokyo raid. Runway is still there and is still used for training ops. Eglin range is a massive heavy ordinance r/d. the 6th Army Rangers jungle training school is there too. Eglin range is home to our eod training facilities scattered throughout this range. There is Duke Field Reserve base shared with the 7th Army SF post , Ala ANG. Hurlburt Field is close by. It’s AFSOC training facility and home to our gunship squadrons, spookys. couple responses here but none tell the real reason, anti air MANPADS are becoming more prevalent with our enemies, and the A-10 Warthog is a low flying slow moving(in comparison to other jets) plane that can only do so much against a manpad. I don't believe the warthog is being entirely phased out but only being used for very specific situations/areas as it recently underwent a huge upgrade package.

My son had a slot to fly and his whole ROTC contingent at VMI were told they were going Reapers. He was bummed but realized in today’s world, the Reaper is a lot more feared by the bad guys ‘cause ya can’t shoot what you can’t see considering the altitude and optics. Mad props to these ‘Hog drivers. Def balls of steel.

Was driving the Kangamangus highway in NH last month and there was a three ship of Hogs doing terrain following training. They ripped right over the scenic outlook we had stopped at and made multiple passes. Super awesome. Though it makes you realize in real deal you get maybe a couple seconds of turbo fan scream before there is nothing left but hair, teeth and eyeballs.

I can relate. Flew a kite about 1-year ago...very windy day. Kite was out-of-control....string broke...crashed to the ground striking Bill (80-year old park worker)...grazed his left pinky finger. Crazy day...still have flash-backs, but I'm doing better and Bill's finger fully healed. Haven't flown a kite since, but who knows...if I get "the call", I might.
