This reminded me of an idea I'd had during Volume 4 about how Whitley could have ended up helping Weiss get out of Jacque's shadow. I was one of the people that didn't automatically assume Whitley would be a terrible person, so when I was thinking about possibilities of him helping Weiss, I had an image of him talking to Weiss just before she would go on stage for her performance and subtly suggest that if she were to announce to the audience that she was planning to return to Vale to help reconstruction/travel to Mistral to continue training at Haven, Jacque wouldn't be able to overturn the decision without making himself look bad. It would have been an interesting play with his character that still could have been partially selfish - since if Weiss left like that, she'd anger Jacque and could still end up passing the title of Heir to Whitley - but it would have been a win-win for him and Wiess, and wouldn't just make him out to be a lapdog of his father.
