Portugal's manager, Mr Santos really is a master tactician when it comes to managing the team. Remember, Portugal won the Euro 2016 without their talisman who was unfortunately injured in the final. With Cristiano also in his twilight years, I believe Santos is really wanting to build up the team using a fresh group of youngsters who are capable of showing the perseverance and endurance to show fearless football on the pitch and get results. Cr7 is an out and out legend of the game who definitely has given his all to make his country come into the spotlight in the last decade and alongside Messi has created records that wouldn't be broken for centuries to come. But reality will hit now that he knows that he has lived his glory days and it's time to be gracious and let his young peers take over the mantle.

Portugal was "on the map" as a success story long before Ronaldo came along. They've been producing some of the most complete and talented players in the world for more than 30 years, as well as some of the best coaches. The reason "80% of Portugal's goals to get into the World Cup came from CR7" is because those players and that system are there to support CR7 scoring those goals. Not saying he can't play, but as today and the Euro Final in 2016 have show clearly, he's a luxury and sometimes a road block to his own team's distribution in the final and middle third. This has always been the case. His vision is barely average; it's always been his physicality that made him hard to stop 1- or 2-v1 or in the air. As today proved, they simply don't need him to score a ton of goals, and may be capable of doing better without "The Portuguese Forrest Gump".

They beat France in the final of Euro 2016 without him. And they had quite a few other good players around that time too. Pepe, Ricardo Carvalho, Ruben Neves, Andre Gomes, Renato Sanchez, Bernardo Silva, Quaresma, Nani, Bruno Fernandes, etc. It's a bit of an insult to those guys to suggest that they were just a one man team. The biggest factor in their Euro 2016 win was their ability to scrape narrow wins through solid defensive work followed by rapid counters. Ronaldo scored 3 on the way to the final, but so did Nani. You have to consider his age. He is not as fast as he use to be and he gets tired fairly quickly so it would be the right thing to do to keep him on the bench and put him on later in the match in critical situations. @8:40 "Nobody saw that performance coming..." Unless they watched Euro 2016 or any international competitions since the mid '90s. Portugal have been called the "Brazillians of Europe" over decades for a really good reason. They've always been very-well structured, they play both ends of the pitch like a science, and individually they always have good vision, technique, unselfishness and discipline. Aside from Pepe in 2014 vs Germany. That red card of his changed the entire world cup that year. Then there are their coaches.. If they had the money for a domestic league such as Italy, Spain and Germany do, it would be like giving lions opposable thumbs. There wouldn't have been any primates. The whole, "Ronaldo has carried Portugal while Messi has failed Argentina", is nothing but a revisionist history meme for Messi-trolling Ronaldo fans who don't know, play, or understand the sport.

That's exactly what I've been saying for a while. Even this world cup, I dont know why they havent been talked about more; they have top 3 players in their positions, IN MULTIPLE POSITIONS, namely Cancelo, Dias, Silva, Fernandes, while still having quality players like Dalot, Felix, Pepe (portugal's best player in the euro 2016 btw), nuno mendes, etc. I honestly think that people intentionally underestimate them so that CR7 doesnt get much backlash if they dont go far, especially since he does hold them back sometimes in terms of structure, due to his lack of flexibility (he can play in only one position mostly these days).
@hadhamalnam2 жыл бұрын
Nah this is pure revisionist history. If you think Portugal at any point in the past decade had the amount of talent they have currently you're deluded.
