I’m a Dominican mom. I have two Black daughters with banging natural curls. My oldest wanted her hair straightened, so I took both girls to my Dominican stylist. The first thing they offered was dique a “deep conditioner”. A week after the blow out, my oldest daughter washed her hair and was distraught about the damage and realization of what had been done to her natural hair. Le pusieron un derizado. She literally cried for days and is still upset years later. My youngest learned about what happened to her beautiful natural hair and was completely disturbed by the “pelo mal” culture. I had no idea this would happen, cause my hair texture is different and I never had this experience. Needless to say, my daughters’ experience opened my eyes. I was so upset, and I have not seen that stylist since. “El Que quiere pelo lindo aguanta jalones” is a statement that perpetuates Eurocentric beauty standards, racism, and colorism. We Dominicans need to own our true identity and not what we have been colonized to represent.

I had the same happen to me. My beautiful curl pattern is gone, from a Domician deep conditioner. Never again, my beautician said I should have come to her afterwards she could have help, but I was too embarrassed because she warned me.😢

The lady I’ve been going to is Dominican and always does a great job on my hair. No complaints. She’s always honest about what I can’t do to my hair (if I’m trying to get color and when I should wait to get it after a relaxer) and she always conditions my hair, let’s me know when I need a trim, etc. I’ve been going to her for a decade. It’s unfortunate this lady experienced such damage. It really does depend on who’s doing your hair

Yes, this shows that there are Dominican hairstylists that still have integrity. I am glad there are still good hairstylists out there.

They're sneaking keratin treatments in without the clients knowledge or consent. I've had my natural hair destroyed TWICE at two different Dominican salons. My last time visiting one, I legit asked the stylist not to put chemicals in my hair during the wash since it's happened to me before & she did it anyway. 😑

@akua5510 Likewise. I realized my hair will not thrive going to those places. I only went because they were most convenient & have cheap prices but it's best to just go to a natural hair salon that specializes in afro-textured hair.

They ARE USING Perm In the conditioner which is why it breaks off. They never neutralize the perm so it breaks off your hair.

Yeah they have a history of this, but sometimes you need something quick and easy, so I took a chance on going to one recently. Low and behold, my hair now feels itchy, and kind of burning sensation on my scalp. I’m prepared to take legal action at this point because how can you sneak a chemical into someone’s hair without their knowledge? Mind you, I always bring my own products to them because I’m leery and I still see this woman pumping something in my hair behind my back. I asked her what it was and she says oh it’s conditioner. I’m like why are you putting anything in my hair when I brought my own stuff and asked that you use that? If I find out for sure they did that, I’m suing them. Period

I feel most naturals have gotten damage from Dominican blow outs . I have waist length hair and got it done by the Dominicans one summer and they gave me severe heat damage ! And from then on my hair just kept breaking off . Took years to get my hair back on track! Of course, other factors played into it but it all started with that Dominican blowout !

That is horrible! I see many women sharing horror stories! Alot of people are scared of long 4A-4B-4C hair, thus cannot handle it when attempting to style it. You would be surprised to find how many stylists (including black stylists) have caused me to have major setbacks as well. Each time a stylist failed me; I would cut all my hair. This is one of the reasons why we started thewaitingroomnhb.com. It is better to be hair independent then to go through what you, myself, and many others have experienced. Thanks for sharing your story. This is also helpful because it helps to spread awareness. Thanks for watching and also thanks for stopping by our channel!

silk presses tend to focus more on heat protecting products and lower flat iron settings so i think they're generally a better option for naturalistas.

They probably put relaxer in the shampoo too. They do that a lot. A lot of Dominican salons are very unethical and anti-black. They hate kinky hair because they hate blackness.

The thing with Dominican blowouts is the fact that they don’t be using hair products to prevent the hair from heat damage. They’ll hair dryer you , flat iron then bump the ends with a curling iron all with no heat protection and if you get a relaxer good luck cuz sometimes they don’t even be putting neutralizing shampoo on your hair after the relaxer..they use regular shampoo so that way the hair is still relaxing and stay smooth.. ask me how I know ? I had been going to a Dominican hair salon for 7 years I stopped going once i couldn’t take the heat to my scalp anymore and saw it one day when a woman brought her own products and told them in Spanish to use it on her hair .. they went and turned around and not even use it .. when I saw that I was shocked and knew they did not care about hair health but how the hair looks in the end result which do be looking nice but at what cost

I’ve had a Dominican blowout on my relaxed hair when I was 25, and my hair turned out great. It lasted for about two weeks. There was no breakage. What happened with this lady is that the stylists the not process her hair properly.

The last time I did a Dominican blow out my hair resulted into heat damage 😅 , the women didn’t know what she was doing. after the whole process of me getting my hair done my hair couldn’t invert back for a month or two it smelled like burnt rice 😂 I definitely went on yelp and did a review on it. Be careful where you go to get your hair done please… it only takes that one time for your hair to be damaged & mess up for a while 😅

Wowww I’ve been reading the comments, you guys are really going for Dominican ppl. I strongly disagree with you. The only reason you had heat damage it’s bcz it wasn’t done properly. African hairdressers are not better, for example they break your hair a lot as well, especially your hairline. Let’s stop generalising on a whole community🤦🏽‍♀️ only black folks do put other brothers down

Putting someone down and sharing personal experiences are two totally different things. If they went to Dominican salon and got their hair damaged...they will say "I went to a Dominican salon". Would they say any other salon? Like an Asian salon? No. These are real stories and they are sharing. Nothing wrong with it. Stop taking things to heart.

I've taking my daughter to 2 different Dominican hair salon the first on said her hair was to thick and did not want to roll it, she just blow dry it and flat iron that was fine with me the 2nd one my child hair came home smelling like chemicals then her hair fell out and I did not know what was going on. How do you tell a 12yr old we need to cut your hair off. I'm not putting down Dominican people im putting done the person , I'm married to a Dominican but if your not right your not right. If she could not do her hair all she had to do was what the first one did just blow it out and keep on moving sometime it about money and being greedy and trying to make them self look good, But now I have a 12yr that had to have her hair chop because of one PERSON not just because she was Dominican because she was greedy.

This happened to me twice at two separate Dominican salons years apart. They put keratin treatments in while they're shampooing hair because they don't know how to deal with afro hair so they destroy it instead, to make their jobs easier but our lives harder. I've had 4 years of healthy hair growth destroyed in a total of two days all thanks to these salons. This isn't slander, these are ppls very real experiences.

Also, when you dealing with heat tools, stylist MUST take into account the client’s texture( Fine,Medium, or Coarse.) Not just type of hair, (straight or kinky,) but the condition of the hair. A lot of women end up getting heat damage because the stylist isn’t using the right temperature or heat setting.

I’ve gotten my hair blown out by the Dominicans plenty of times in the past until recently the woman who styled my hair blew my hair out when it was super dry and not detangled and I have 4b 4c hair with defined curls once she did this my hair was never the same when it was time to revert. The ends were heat damaged and couldn’t wear my hair In my normal natural styles I eventually had to cut my hair and it’s damaged ends at the end of last year and currently starting over again. I will prob not go back to the Dominican salons because I’ve notice a trend that they don’t take The time to comb through my textured hair and so I will not be going to the salon for long time because of this.

I was thinking of going to a Dominican hair salon in my city I looked up the salon reviews and pics they were really good but when I went to look at their booking app it was notes on every service that you have to detangle your hair before going and if you don’t you have to add that as a service. I went to go check out that out and it was a $50 fee for detangling the hair plus it was subject to increase sod your hair was longer. After I added up everything just for a blow out, trimming of the ends, and the detangling everything was $150 and you pay half when booking.

I’m a heat trained natural who gets Dominican blowouts. You really have to go to the right person. I get my hair roller set and blown out like the first example you showed. I’ve also had my hair damaged before I became a heat trained natural by Dominicans who did sneak relaxer in it. Both me and my friend had hair falling out in clumps…. the hair feels very different. I’ve had heat damaged before and it wasn’t like what it was when relaxer was snuck into it.

I had grown all my heat damaged hair out and cut it away. I’m from Chicago not a huge Dominican population there’s black salons and Egyptian salon for blowouts and silk press and this happens to me by a black stylist I said I knew the nature of my hair and loved it I just wanted a rough blowout and for the stylist to give me a blunt cup and I didn’t want the hair I loved chemically manipulated. Yet when she wash the water based gel from my hair a third time and the shampooing process seemed of that you’d take during a chemical process. I also inform this black stylist and natural hair care person of my reaction to chemicals had led me to have a spinal tap from experience a migraine that left me blind for 30 minutes i reiterated I did not want any chemical in my hair. Upon her sitting me under the dryer twice for conditioning then rinsing me twice after shampooing and blow drying my hair smelled oily a burnt like an oil lamp. When parts of my hair reacted to humidity and reverted and cross in my head stay straight she continued to lie and when I expressed suing to the salon owner about my hair the owner communicated that she had given me a keratin treatment and never again. Currently had a huge breakage of hair about four fingers in each direction. That is on top of the alopecia areta I also informed the stylist I suffered from.
