What went wrong in Supergirl (1984)

After the wake of Superman 3. The Supergirl movie followed. With Chris Reeve deciding to not appear in the film. The movie went into rewrites. Along with poor test screening. The movie was edited down into different versions. To the poor character development, unexplained moments in the story, no focus, and badly edited down in the US. Supergirl failed to gain its budget back. What could be done to fix this.

You can tell Peter O Tioole and Peter Cook were only there for the paycheck. Peter Cook looked totally fed up during any of scenes.

I think this movie gets a really unfair bad rap. Helen Slater was perfect for Supergirl, and Faye Dunaway made for a very convincing villain. The supporting cast was very good too, especially Peter Cook, Brenda Vaccaro, Maureen Teefy, and Peter O'Toole. Jerry Goldsmith's score was brilliant, and I really like the movie overall.

I agree with your points. Can I add that there is no reason whatsoever for Kara to have a secret identity given that unlike Clark she has no ties to any human, and no need to have a private life. Finding the omegahedron should have been a ticking time bomb, an urgency from the get go, why have her create a secret identity from thin air, go to school, and then just leave with her secret? The only person she spent a little time with was Lucy, but it's not like they knew eachother well. Keeping a secret identity was pointless

Agreed. If they had made a better story. Where she'd was going to stay. It would have made more sense. They could have done it. Since the OH could be told to go back to her home and save them. Sadly a wasted opportunity to do this right.

The biggest flaw for me was that the clock was ticking on finding the Omegahedren, to save Argo City from her blunder - but when Kara gets here, the sense of urgency all but disappears, and she starts cosplaying schoolgirl life, solving math problems, making friends, and winning ball games.

Great points!! Even so, this movie is better than Sup 3 and 4. Aside from Christopher Reeve, those sucked. Biggest mistake ever made in superhero films was when the Salkinds fired Richard Donner! :-/

Happy 2022. Never saw the original Supergirl movie was planning on it but then I saw a video talking about the top 10 worst comic book movies and when they mentioned Supergirl and why it was bad I was like "Yeah I love my brain so much that I don't want to kill it."

Happy New Year!!! Outstanding review once again! I think my first time of even knowing this film's existence was from Mike Matei's review on the Cinemassacre's website from, I think, 2012 (so it basically would've been about 10 years from now), and, man, is it such a letdown... I do think this film is at least better than Superman III, and IV, but, once again like those atrocities, it focuses way too much on comedy. The fact that there's apparently 4 versions of the film just make this even more convoluted... When are these movie directors ever gonna realize that they can't continue to rush their films, otherwise, they're just gonna end up as a confusing mess with loads of plot holes? I agree with you that they should've stopped with the Superman movies at this point with 2 flops in a row, instead of making ANOTHER installment that ended up as yet another bomb. Perhaps for a future FTV review you could take a look at "Cats Don't Dance", and sometime for a WWW video you could review "Avengers Assemble (2013)".

Only one thing that rubbed many fans the wrong way about this movie was the way she got the iconic outfit very quickly without any of the creation and montages by earning it at least that got fixed in season one of Supergirl it was quite obvious they used an backlot at an London film studio as the city and many years later I met Helen at an Uk convention and she signed my legend of billie Jean dvd that I mainly talked about and had an photograph taken with her and I also talked to dean Cain about my story from my childhood on how I wrote to him from the Uk by finding the fan address from an Uk teen magazine he was great to hear my story by meeting him in person and had an photo taken with him and my story and journey was complete.

I love this movie, and that it's her own VS a team up with superman, still would have been cool though if he was in it. I do wish there was more fighting scenes but as is, I love the character Selena and even her roommate with Nigel is funny. I think she can change into her outfits is like without explanation, can change into telephone booths. I'm glad it was made either way, Helen Slater is a great casting choice as Kara.

Another question- how did Zaltar know Supergirl was in the Phantom Zone?? Was he out walking randomly and found her "or" did he know she was there as he could saved Supergirl much sooner, its really never explained

With Laura Diane Vandervoort + Good script who knows Kara and Henry Cavill it will a good Supergirl movie. Supergirl 1984 had a turn arround scipt without Christopher Reeve and that the biggest mistake they made !
