Big ups to Tim for pushing back on Schreier's reporting. While it's true that he can sometimes be a positive force for change in the industry; it is also his career and livelihood. So make no mistake that Schreier has an agenda. This "brand" of reporting is how he makes his money. Be a critical reader.

The problem is that CDPR made an entire build for the demo that had features and mechanics that are just absent from the entire game, and not just a few things, there are huge lists on their forums and long videos about it. People at first thought that these missing mechanics were cut from the game but the fact (according to the article) is that they never were designed for the game in the first place. Whether these "missing" features were intentionally left out of the game or not the studio spent the time and money on marketing to show off the game, people just want a clear answer to if the heads planned to over hype the game just so they could under deliver later to make development easier since they had no structure or no idea how to properly develop the game. All the blame goes on to the management and anyone who says Journalists or developers like the QA team didn't do their due diligence is already eating up the lies spread by both Marcin and Adam in their responses.

@@HermanFalckHow Comparing graphical differences in Spider-man's and Watch Dogs demos isn't the same thing as this though. The "demo" of Cyberpunk has a lot of core mechanics missing from the actual game and not even small mechanic changes such as including Skellige in the overall map as the example you provided. CDPR straight up showed off a prototype of the game and passed it off as a demo. It sounds like they started just building the world and started scripting the story together then tackled in the main game play mechanics as a second thought.

@@HermanFalckHow Graphical downgrades, like a puddle looking slightly worse, and the complete removal of multiple gameplay mechanics are not the same thing. Watch Dogs is a more comparable situation because the differences between it's release and initial trailers were massive, but even in that case, the changes were largely cosmetic. Spider-Man and The Last of Us don't compare and the situation with Cyberpunk is much, much more problematic than any of the above.

The difference between sony giving uncharted to a new studio and ms continuing halo and gears is as tim stated, sony has many other studios in the fold that keep churning out new ip. This happened in both the 7th and 8th gen and will likely continue this gen. Xbox might be changing that now with all their talent but they still relied on halo and gears for too long which is why they were ran into the ground.

Bless, to answer "how should we market video games"...the answer is simply "later". Wait until they're closer to completion to start sharing with the public. We've slowly inched farther away from launch windows when talking about marketing. Marketing budgets have outgrown development budgets. It's ridiculous.

The new Sony studio was initially built to create TV shows of the big Sony games, using animation created in-engine. The programmers had been part of Sony's support-team that all their studios used for graphics and tech-support. The decision was made that these shows didn't have an audience, and the talent was put on game design instead. They got the go-ahead because Shawn Layden was keen on doing Sony remakes, but that doesn't mean the game eventually ended up being a remake. The guy who's linkedIn everyone's analyzing said all of this himself here, and gave a detailed description of how the studio was founded: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oJjUkKWej9x3nq8

@@Deanolegacy Yes, I know where the word demo comes from. As gamers I just think we understand that to mean something a little different. When you download a game demo, you are getting to play it yourself, you're not watching someone else play it in a tightly curated presentation. The term has been been used in that context for decades, back when we used to get demo discs with our print gaming magazines. The press should understand their audience as gamers and seek to precisely describe their experience to gamers. If you don't like the word presentation, that's fine, but they should really draw some kind of distinction from the word "demo" as most gamers understand it. "Hands on demo" is a more commonly used distinction, but I think a more aggressive distinction is necessary.

If you enjoyed it that’s great. I guess it also depends on what your toleration level is. Personally I think it’s completely unacceptable for a game to crash a console once, let alone regularly. My PS4 crashed maybe 3 times in the 7 years I’ve owned it. I get that PC’s may crash when you are running different software and mods etc as it’s so complex, but consoles should not.

Sean Murray and Hello Games were heavily criticized when they didn't speak about No Man's Sky launch AT ALL. For months. And when they finally did speak up again, it was only to say "Hey, we're making some changes." Then people understood that they were quiet because they were trying to fix what happened, and not to open themselves up to further scrunity. Maybe CDPR needs to take a page from that book, take the hits that they deserve, and if and when a game-changing patch comes for Cyberpunk, THAT is when they should finally speak up. People say they're "never going to forgive them!" which I think is kind of overblown. If CDPR just shuts up and gives us something better by the end of the year, a lot of people would forgive them. Not everyone, but a lot. But instead, they keep trying to defend themselves and it just seems like nobody knows what "public relations" means at that studio. They just keep digging that hole.

Love Jason and his work to change the industry by looking on problems, but, for a guy working on games, the statement of : The demo was fake..., it's a little bit some clickbait, maybe by Jason or other outlets just push the narrative for the clicks. First of all, if you check the 2018 E3 demo, sure a lot of things have changed, it's the way games are made. But, the map is almost the same, the mission structure is almost the same and more. All those elements are in the final product, so I don't call this fake, it's just really early developpement. It"s just sad to see how every outlet is trying to pick apart CDPR for some things that are just normal in creating a big project. The bigger questions outlets should put the light on are on the crunch (once again), Junior devs just gaining 700$/per month in a fucking expansive country like Poland, not listening to employees enough and much more. Plus, all the games (or big project and movies) comes together in the last 8-6 month, most of the time. The issue is more about reveal and tease games years to early and this is a whole industry issue, not just CDPR. If people want representative demo of games, compagnies should do promotions the Fallout 4 way. For remember, the game was 7 years in production, show at E3 for the first time and release 5 month after. So, the demo was really just the game almost finish. And finally, about the marketing, I think the biggest error of CDPR with Cyberpunk is ALL the branding and promotion they put around the game. I seen maybe 20 or more thing being Cyberpunk branded for pomotion months prior to the release (Chairs, graphic cards, consoles, headphones, mouse, custom pc, comics and more). Sure, this is not devs doing this, but most of the time compagnies ask the guys in charge of the UI-UX (Graphic designers) to work on those things and it take time. Plus, the execs spend way more time doing this than listening to the employees about the game. In the end, I'm sure all the intentions were good at CDPR, but the game and the hype became way to much too handle for a studio that was kinda small even at the time of Witcher 3 release. They saw all opportunities and they forgot the focus being the GAME.

Agreed. IMO a better model of purchase is how Larian Studio is doing Baldur Gate 3, letting people buy Early Access if they want to try the pre-release version. I don't usually pre-order games. I only trusted 2 devs; CDPR and Paradox, but I still didn't pre-order on faith alone. (Paradox's CK3 is on gamepass, so I didn't have to order that at all) I pre-ordered Cyberpunk and THPS, but only after Blessing and Tim had said they were legit. Both cases you based your recommendation on what the publishers had given you. Activision were honest and CDPR were not. Activision aren't beloved and Tim had been burnt before so he was skeptical, and I was too, but they nailed it. Whereas CDPR have always said the right thing so we trusted them. Blessing got hands on over streaming and it was pre-release so I completely understand giving them the benefit of the doubt. If they genuinely didn't know the PS4 version was fucked, they would have let Blessing play that and he would have said this things is definitely not ready. If Watchdogs didn't teach you to check your hype then Kind of Funny can't do it either. Now, they should do an Anthem. Scrap your roadmap that was made for a universe where the game came out mostly done with more manageable bug fixes. Scrap your plans for DLC, whether free or certainly if they’re paid. Scrap the ridiculous notion of any sort of online mode for obvious reasons. Now take the skeleton of your game and work from there to create the game it was supposed/ should be. I don’t know if Bioware is planning on charging for whatever drastic redo they’re quietly planning but for cyberpunk not being a games as a service with micro transactions, they’ll most likely have to charge some higher price. Conversation around cyberpunk is so weird with how people are saying this is completely out of left field for CDProject Red. Outside of straight up lying about the console releases (which is such a despicable thing to do) all the other problems of the game are just more extreme versions of problems with the Witcher games. Witcher one needed a definitive edition to make the game even playable (and it’s still extremely unstable). Witcher 2 and 3 were buggy and had the same practices as going into cyberpunk. Yo, whoever was saying that the car chases were in cyberpunk as advertised needs to get his head checked. First off there are 3 or 4 total chases in the game and they are all completely scripted and have no fail state. Second, the demo leads one to believe that those chases are dynamic and happen based on your actions for or against a particular gang. There is no factions system and gangs dont track your affiliation in any way, there are no dynamic car chases in the game whatsoever. In fact the AI isn't even capable of driving at all outside of scripted sequences.

That game was beyond trash and now, the developers have done an incredible job with it. One can only hope CD can do the same.

That entire 48-min sequence is in the game though? It plays out ever so slightly differently and the ui has changed but I definitely played that entire mission as they showed it. The issue is that "demo" has more than one meaning in the industry. Almost no companies release demos as you're referring to them anymore, playable and a few months before release. That's essentially what pre-order betas have become. But demos can also be tech demos which this one was literally, and I don't think that was made clear enough. It was behind closed doors, 2 years prior to release, with a WIP tag across the bottom of it the entire time. Any understanding of game development tells you that things change in 2 whole years. As Tim and Imran said, reporters should do more to make that clearer but as a retail worker I can tell you that tons of consumers won't ever bother to do any research regardless so it won't ever matter.

@@blaze2293 IDK what to tell you? That's marketing? You're suggesting that no developer should ever show off a game until it's gone gold a month or two until release? Because they're all working on their games with things subject to change until it's gold. Also you realize it's no one's fault but your own that you expected an old demo to be frame for frame the same as the game that releases 2 years later. Maybe you haven't played it but this entire mission plays out exactly as it does in the demo, including the branching paths to finish it different ways. They didn't release a demo for people to play or try and then release a game vastly different from that which it sounds like your accusing them of.

Let me tell you something as a former QA tester: These issues were *known* by the developers, the QA team, the management, and Jabowski himself. The QA team are literally experts in how to break your game, and with Cyberpunk, you don't even need to *try* to break the game. Don't defend this practice dude. It suffers from a massive crisis of identity. It wants to be a GTA style open world, it wants to be a choice based RPG, it wants to be a narrative driven immersive sim, and it wants to be a highly stylised action game. Unfortunately, it doesn't do any of these exceptionally, and instead just does them all good enough. It's a shame. Instead of getting "the most immersive RPG to date" we got a game that is perfectly fine as a video game but plagued with technical issues. What's most disappointing to me is the lack of a quest that's as impressive as the Skellige Conspiracy or the Bloody Baron quest. The writing in this game in general (especially Johnny Silverhand and his awful character) is so lacklustre.

I lost half of the price amount of the game because I am not even that impressed is poor quality ( at least to me). A sequel to Death Stranding could potentially be multiplatform or even Xbox exclusive. This type of funding happens all of the time, after SquareEnix and IO interactive parted ways IO retained the Hitman license and even was able to take distribution rights with them of games that SquareEnix paid to produce, it was the same with Quantic Dream, Sony paid to produce all of those games but owned the IP to none of them.

I don't know what's next for Kojima Productions, maybe Sony will buy it just as they did Insomniac, but the point is that right now Kojima Productions is an independent entity just as Insomniac was, just as Quantic Dream was.
