I feel like the downfall began for me when they started releasing 2 new cards the first week of the month (season pass and a new spotlight card) prior to that it often felt like I could reasonably keep up on the collection if I bought the pass. After that it seems like they just wanted to increase the grind of the game. With Deadpool’s diner then alliances then leagues all requiring a ton of grinding if you wanted to get the rewards, on top of grinding ladder and grinding conquest. I am still playing but have scaled way back no longer do alliances, don’t play conquest and frequently take time off. We’ll see if I keep going but it is just too much to keep up at this point,
@TheAverageGatsbyАй бұрын
@brendangallagher6496 I love Conquest, but it's a heavier time requirement, esp in infinite. Diner is fine, but if you're losing and miss out because your card pool sucks then I can't imagine that feels good for newer players(?). And the spotlight system just feels so... why? Let people choose what they want. I would still key to get the skins. You can pretty reliably get 3 keys a week if you're really going at it. 14:31 Or get rid of this mystery slot bullshit. It almost always feels like shit. I skip fenrir for a reason, I rolled for Gorr, I got fenrir out of the mystery. My reaction wasn't, "oh boy, the card I didn't roll a single key for last week." It was, "oh boy, at least it's a series 5 and I didn't get bent over for 1k tokens on a dupe." Which even that isn't great.
@brendangallagher6496Ай бұрын
@ I don’t mind the spotlight system as much as most because in the end it is not much different than the token system except you sometimes get a discount and you get extra stuff sometimes. I mind the grind to get the resources to max it out and the FOMO of not doing it. I don’t hate conquest but it is more time commitment, same with Deadpool’s diner, and alliances, and Leagues. They are all grind festa for resources and for me it got to be too much so I scaled back to mostly just ladder. I also stopped caring about being collection complete (I got there like month 2 or spotlights because it was easier in early spotlights to gain on the collection then it is now because more cards are released and nothing is series 4.). I just look for fun cards that interest me and play with those. This season it was Malekith. I had fun with him. I am enjoying Etri as well but I stopped climbing diner once I got him because I did not like the grind.
@TheAverageGatsbyАй бұрын

@@TheAverageGatsbyI played the diner on a new account they will match you with new players. Also why the slot machine? Money. They need to make money. The majority of snap is free, and you level up quite fast so they have to Halt your pace or else you're just gonna get everything for relatively free, and be BORED. They can't release less cards or there's less to do They can't release more cards or there's too much bloat so they have to just slow down the progression. Its kinda how actual card collecting works, but tbh if they made dupes 3k I think people would be less upset.

As an f2p player, I've been monitoring my acquisition since launch. Honestly the spotlight system was great, and at the start of this year I was missing only 7 cards. I even bought a thank you one-time season pass in Hope Summers. Little did I realize the thumbscrews were being turned. The extra card each season, almost all cards releasing as series 5, season pass cards never returning as spotlights, the stingy series drops that contain bad cards, etc. Now I'm still sitting on 66k+ tokens like a dragon, but while in other card games I can freely spend my free resources to get a meta deck every 4 months or so (10k dust for Hearthstone, 800 pack points for Pokemon Pocket), I can't do that with Snap: If I spend 24k tokens, I'm not going to regain those 24k tokens in the next 4 months. That will take me the next 2 years! Besides this I think new and returning players have it harder than me.

LoR had the same issue, you got 2000 green....whatever that currency was per week and you needed 750 per day to unlock that competitive track or whatever it was, that was the beginning of the end. Also not nerfing some decks for months while nerfing others instantly. Why do we need to play for months against Ahri/Kennen and Lurk while Iceborn Spiders gets nerfed instantly, makes no sense. Same thing happens in snap there is absolutely no reason to nerf a card exactly 1 week after it's in a spotlight, happened too many times. As long as games don't learn to nerf/buff way more often it will keep happening.

I am daily (mission) player from almost a start. I have bought 2 season passes during my play (once per year as a thank You to developers), because it feels like 10$ per year game to me. I almost never spend gold or tokens in a game (I bought Galactus and Thanos for tokens in a time, when it was/intended to be the only way to acquire them). I don't have a fomo for latest cards. I have unopened 630 collectors reserves because they don't give stuff I want. All my strategy is to get missing cards, no matter what they are. The cards I own already makes me competitive enough. When 7:12 happened I was missing 20 cards in my collection. Right now I am missing 30 cards and I have 3 keys waiting for next spotlight cashes with at least 2 missing cards (50/50 chance). If I spend my gold and tokens, I would easily go under missing 20 cards. IMHO spotlight cashes system works for a ftp player like me. And I play game that are much worse... Disney Speedstorm.

I stopped playing 9 months ago at the end of the Shaw Season. Spotlights felt too min maxy to be fun. There's no agency in anything you collect, and the balance at the time was bad for me. I think the final straw was nerfing Dracula as Annihilus was still prominent. Started back playing recently because Gorr was good in Negative and I like that kinda highroll all or nothing sort of deck. But I play like 1 or two games a day and move on because other cards I need to make decks I wanna play are still 6000 tokens and I don't have enough and they aren't appearing in my shop and they aren't in the spotlight and I'm not gonna log in every 8 hours to check and not being able to draw ANY series 4 or 5 cards in the now useless reserve system is what really hurts especially after lowering token gain from them AND removing gold from them in an attempt to get you to spend. It's a general feels bad. The recent series drop is crazy to me because I was 2 cards off from collection complete when I stopped playing as a dolphin player, and out of the 9 months I was away I missed maybe 40-45 cards and somehow I'm still series 3 complete. Some cards that have been out for years like Iron Lad should have been dropped to at least Series 3. Jeff too. It's just their way to make you grind for cards that are absolutely more powerful/universal or waste all your resources on them. I don't even know why every cards starts at series 5. Is it to mask the perceived strength of the card? You can't be sure to skip it if the card turns out to be strong, but starting at series 4 might make people think it's okay to pass it up. Idk they fumbled hard
@N00BSYBORGАй бұрын
I took a break after the Zabu meta because I was feeling burnt out only to come back and realize I was now forever going to be lagging behind. The rate at which they add series 5 cards to the game while slowly dropping cards to lower series makes card collecting a slog. They seem to intentionally be keeping better cards in series 5 too. Some cards dropped a series after a few months but others haven't dropped in like a year. Sometimes more. Also, MvC music in the background. Very based.

With no way of accessing them and seeing the deck often, I had no way of playing it or getting in front of it. I just moved on, and haven't looked back. I had to stop playing about 2 months ago. There was a new car drop every week, drastically changing the meta every 30 minutes. I wasn't getting free cards monthly, I wasn't unlocking new cards more than once a week or less. I was getting a hundred tokens a week. None of the rewards on anything seemed worth it when all I needed were cards. And all the new cards were making so many other cards obsolete or just breaking them. And finally in most importantly the RNG is Savage, between card drops or game scenarios
@DrMuffins321Ай бұрын
The main issue I had with the game was lack of credits. Only available in daily missions. Once you complete them there’s no point in playing anymore for that day as you can’t advance without credits. You didn't even touch on them adding a new card each month starting around June 2024. Prior to this, the Season Pass earned you the first new card and you could coast the first week and stock up for the second new card. Now, every season starts with two new cards, for a total of five. Recent seasons are adding a sixth new card via the High Voltage or Deadpool's Diner. So, players now get to scramble to acquire six new Series 5 cards each month. Two of the new cards this Rivals season indicate that they'll not run out of material to generate new cards. Bruce Banner and Groot+Rocket seem almost like a threat, "We'll always have fresh ways to push new cards." Get ready for Peter Parker and Wanda+Vision.

This Video is very accurate and doesnt overly dramatize everything. The amount of times i heard people say SD needs to do something fast because of the Pokemon Pocket is insane, of couse Pokemon is successful no cap. But Marvel Snap suffers mostly form Problems it has created itself, the release of pocked was just one of the tipping points that got the community to speak out for once more. I dont think the team behind marvel snap worrys that much about pocket and they honestly should not. (Btw, we also need to see for how long Pokemon Pocked will even be popular, I saw Pokemon fumble this bag several times now. Although this is likely there best shot yet, i didnt even want to engage with the PTC games anymore because of that.) I really hope SD is really working on some new systems that help especially new and returing players to get faster into the core Collection of Marvel Snap. Players that already play for at least 6-8 months are getting a good experience for the most part in my Opinion, the major issue the game has is with new player and the gigantic hill that Series 3 has become. Picking one specific Series 3 card for free is not just not enough anymore if anyone wants to build a specifc deck. And if you just come back from a pause of the game, there is a good chance you cant pick up a new card for 3 weeks because you need to stack up on keys first and even then you must hope one of the Spotlights is good for your collection.

I stand by what I said, but you do have a good point. The fact that you can actually "just come to a game and drop hundreds of dollars to get" a few cards in the game. Buying Variants in shop does unlock the card, something I didn't realize early on until I purchased the Peach Momoko Mystique, prior to unlocking Mystique, only later to unlock the base Mystique. Definitely something I should have mentioned in the Monetization portion of the vid.

Greed, incompetence, and taking many months to respond to literally anything if they even bother to respond at all, all to the detriment of the player experience. I played Marvel Snap for 7 months and I watched in real time how little the developers cared about making the game better as they added more and more to nickel and dime people and little to actually improve the game experience. I finally broke free in mid-2024 and I will never ever return to Marvel Snap because it is obvious they care about money far more than they care about making a game that is fun to play, with reasonable card acquisition time.

Fun game. I would go as far as to say the gameplay is genius in it's simplicity. Like most good ideas in the video game space, it's ruined by greed. The monetization is Snap is a joke. It feels like a gacha game, only worse. At least in a gacha you can spend to get the thing you want. Snap makes you farm for months AND still get good rng with the gacha mechanic.

I have such an anti-grind mindset that the success of most mobile games confuses me. The entire monetization system for all these games seem doomed to petter out at some point.
@TheAverageGatsbyАй бұрын
@TheNotableNobody I really hope I didn't bury the lede too much on this one. The system worked when Second Dinner was following through on monetization being mostly cosmetic. It failed when they gave players a chance to get screwed by the token/spotlight key systems that made it very possible/likely to just miss cards for f2p players. Paired with an unwillingness to provide regular Series drops, it lost a lot of love from players.

I played on launch, and the game is fun, but once they started adding pool 4 and 5 and didn’t move any of them down it became impossible to keep up. The collection system worked when the highest pool was 3, after that it became impossible to keep up at all and there’s no point

New Players view: I started about 1 month + to play marvel snap and it was a lot of fun (coming from HS) now that i rank up higher Plat+ it feels like i cant get any further its against people who own a lot of strong cards that i just cant own. I am talking about series 3 cards here! The Progress by play is so bad that its not worth my time climbing a little bit in the Season Pass to get 10 Boosters of something and 3 lvls and 2hrs after that 100 Credits so u can climb only 2 lvl further your "Unlock path" to get everything else then a card. It would be great to have a locked Credits per game reward system where u can choose your own pace of unlocking cards and stuff, or at least to choose the stuff thats in the chest. I bought the agent venom battle pass because of venom and carnage to build an destroy deck otherwise i wouldnt have any "stronger" working deck. Thats somehow sad tbh.

An entirely new video you should do is show how location and deck based match making are a thing. SD manipulates the meta to protect the season pass card and the spotlight cards. Play like 20 games per card type, document each of your opponents and locations, then change and do the same. You will see you'll get a different set of locations and a different type of opponent. SD job is to make money, so they have to make the community feel a card will change their luck. Look at the history of Luke Cage and what they did to him for like 3 months to protect season release cards.

Hey, to open a cache with a chance to get the new weekly card - you need credits. They have reduced the number of credits that you can earn - leading you to get the overpriced bundles or use 6000 tokens. You said it was just cosmetic, well it is not.

I quit IIRC about May this year mostly due to the issues around card aquisition. Opening Caches and getting a Gold key rather than Tokens felt more like an insult. Using Keys and never getting the new card on the first or second pulls feels really bad and scammy. I went back to play last month, all the stuff that bugged me then are still there. Oh, and OTA adjustments always feels like they don't take time to playtest anything they release so they just fix things after the fact. How many times has Zabu been hit with an OTA? Having played physical CCG's in the past their card releases and subsequent fixes always makes me feel like we're playing a game that never left beta testing.

Got tired after facing too many bots. After the season reset you just get put up against bots and you would think thats not a bad thing but no most of the time they were either set up to make you lose (armor and anti reveal decks when using destroy decks) or they would retreat when you are about to win and you only get 2 cubes.
@VulcanP9012 күн бұрын
I stopped playing because I was only getting 2 cubes a match. Every opponent would auto-retreat every time I snapped. You can't even grind if you only get 2 cubes a game. It would take forever to get anything.

This game fundamentally cannot be a pay to win game cause you cannot directly buy all the cards, and even so all of the Good cards are typically in series 3 which majority of the community can freely get to in 3ish weeks. Also Just cause you have GORE doesn't mean it's an instant win. Even with a BRAIN DEAD card like red hulk he wasn't a guaranteed win.

@TheAverageGatsbyАй бұрын
@Croissant-bk6dt I think the only way it's possible for a new f2p player to catch up and play is to have a deck in mind and stick with it. Only shoot for 1 style (discard/destroy/disrupt/etc) of deck. Even still, there's just a chance you miss keys. Second Dinner really fell short of expectations for me with the lack of regular series drops.
@kucinghoren7864Ай бұрын
It depend, i quit 3 times and still comeback playing. First, make sure you already finish series 3. If you don't. It's hell. Need around 3-6 months playing everyday to finish it. Second, you don't need new cards, all you need master of your deck. I got around 15 new 2024 cards (no season pass) and only 1 card i played the most, it's Arishem because i play him when i am bored. But for climb up, i stick with Living Tribunal deck with bunch of series 1,2,3 (Iron Man, Onslaught, Magik,etc). So what i want to say, you don't need new cards as long as you master one deck. Third, always check datamines, they leak new cards for next 1-2 months. This where i excited to comeback because "this card looks good for living tribunal, i am gonna save my key for next 2 months".

I have never been tricked/hooked by a F2P model for any game, ever. I even played Hearthstone since beta without spending one penny on it. Built up a significant collection too. But with Marvel Snap, I caved. I started by buying the 10 dollar season pass…. and before I knew it, I had spent almost $300 in a few months. And the reason? You basically HAVE to spend money to get a deck worth playing. Ben Brod is full of crap. You absolutely can turbo your way through the collecting process. You just have to spend a LOT of money.

The 2 main issues that killed the game for me was that unlocking cards in the game was brutal. I played the game for close to a year and didn't have hardly any suitable cards unlocked to make useful decks to push up the ranks. The second issue I have with this game is that they change what cards do over time. This isn't necessarily bad on paper and it also keeps the cards feeling fresh but It just feels so bad to build a deck around the function of a card and them to come in and completely change how that card works and in a lot of cases completely destroy how it works. Sometimes it's just minor adjustments which is fine but when you completely change the whole dynamic of the card and you don't have enough cards to adapt to that change then it just feels really bad.
@jamiebowler4693Ай бұрын
I have no idea why they got rid of the token shop, it was honestly a solid progression system. I played pretty casually and was able to collect 3 of the most expensive cards at the time, (thanos, galactus and kang) who were all meta defining. Progression is a slog now and the rng aspect of spotlight caches are cringe af. If you stop playing for a bit like myself you are so out of sync and are like 10 metas behind.
@geneshiftautoАй бұрын
Good video, thanks! Though I do have one question about your decision to not come back at the end of the video. I don't play much Marvel Snap so maybe I am misunderstanding, but why is it necessary to "catch up"? I get that their monetization model means that in order to catch up you'd need a bunch of keys that you'll miss out on if you take a break. But why is it even necessary to catch up in the first place? Assuming you already have a good competitive deck of 12 cards, isn't that going to remain a viable option, even if you come back in 6 months? Does the game have some sort of in-built system that makes old cards less viable over time, or prohibits you from using old cards? Or is it simply a psychological desire to be "collection complete". I'm genuinely curious as I've seen many people make this criticism and I believe it, but as a new player I just don't understand what I'm missing here. Because as a newbie I also don't have all the cards, and have even more catching up to do than you do, but I am having a great time unlocking new cards. Thanks for the video and any insights you can share!
@TheAverageGatsbyАй бұрын
@geneshiftauto You are correct, I could probably focus on one deck and eventually get caught up. Let's take discard as an example. This year Corvus Glaive, Proxima Midnight, and Scorn were added. Great cards for the strategy with Scorn being must. More importantly all 3 are Series 5 cards that would cost 18k tokens total. I didn't do a good enough job explaining how incredibly scarce tokens are. Even if you're playing a lot, the best ways to get them is by purchasing 10 items from the shop using Gold, token Tuesday gold bundles, or buying harshly priced card bundles. So I could play an incomplete list, that potentially influenced balance changes, to catch up after several months of grinding, all while the meta is still changing, and potentially other best in slot cards are being added to the strategy I picked, or I could just not play Snap.
@dreadwitchqueenАй бұрын
The meta is extremely volatile in this game (which at least keeps it fresh). A deck that was viable even a month in the past will not necessarily continue to be viable, as when more and more powerful cards get added to the game that boost certain archetypes more and more, an older deck can really easily be left in the dust.

sorry. i had absolutely ZERO faith that any "modern" company would be willing to make a card game that isn't pay to win, so i never bothered picking it up to begin with. sad to see i was not wrong. pay for "cosmetic only" isn't "enough" to keep these "game companies" happy, they always want more. maximize the money extraction! average revenue per User! eventually you will be pressured to pay for the things people actually want to do, and are willing to pay for. which will almost always come down to getting the cards you need to win.

I was a regular Marvel Snap player for almost 18 months. But over time the game felt tiring & repetitive. Every 3rd game would be destroy deck. Thanos deck became too common. It felt like you play 5 games & the cycle of game type repeated again from 6th game. Devs took lot of efforts to nerf & buff cards to make people use more varieties, but seems like it didn’t do much. What my solution would had been was to add a huge amount of series 3 cards each month. Powers could look redundant, but it wouldmake card collection interesting. For example, many characters already introduced in MCU were definitely not coming back. They could have just added them despite the theme or promotion they are running along with MCU’s release. Characters like Obidiah Stane, Howard Stark, Whiplash, Frost Giants, Darcy Lewis, Erik Selvig, Dormammu, and many other other pre-Thanos characters.

I disagree, when Arishem came out he had A 75% play rate which means at least there were 75% of players who immediately got him, and as someone who has played games where you gain all the cards, trust me it is not worth it. It is far more boring and unplayable when you have all the cards then when you have most of them, that is the truth you all have most of them if you played the game since launch. I am ready to disagree and be wrong but in my opinion I believe that yes it could be better with them always releasing series 5s and only nerfing characters when they are after the season pass but it is far more enjoyable than all other greedy mobile games combined, and I think that is what makes you all mad, you love the game but hate how they incentivise the game making you do the brunt of the work
