What a beautiful watch. I really like the simplicity and the downtoned elegance - most people wouldn't think this is a watch worth a lot of money, they would think this is just another gold plated, simple watch, and not a watch with a solid 18k gold casing.

In my opinion, Longines always made high quality watches, which the "working man/woman" could afford to purchase and enjoy. Longines was synonymous with quality and value. I have several of these treasures in my modest collection and I absolutely love each and every one of them for their beauty. Longines were Never overstated. Never gimmicky. Longines always prioritized function over form and in so doing, always created elegant watches. It was a real pleasure for me watching (pun unintended) you perform the precision service work on this beautiful example of a timeless classic. Thank you for sharing your masterful work with all of us Stian! Best wishes, Fred @@VintageWatchServices

I have a similar model Longines from about the same year, but with a stainless steel case and Cal. 284 movement. The minimalism, clean lines and elegance are actually what really drew me to this watch. Plus, the movement is really beautiful once you get the case open. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for this video. I had wondered what a Longines watch looked like inside. Now I know. You wanted to know why they used transparent capstones. I heard it was part of a game they had invented, which was a bit like Hunt the Thimble, but this game was for the children of watchmakers. It came with a day off from playing around and enjoying their holidays while they scoured the carpet looking for a lost capstone, but the reward was something like an ice cream for the winning child, and a few smarties for a contact lens, and a toffee for every click spring they found.

Thanks for another fantastic video. I adore those vintage Longines. When you consider some of their innovations, it's criminal that Swatch don't free them from the worry of treading on Omega's toes. None of my watches wind as smoothly as my rocker 345, and none of the second hands are as smooth as my 430 ultra chron. Just because modern Longines aren't allowed to be great, it doesn't mean that they weren't at the very top a few decades ago.

Lovely Longines cleaning and servicing, Stian. The simplicity of that 1960s timepiece was where the market neede to be with those very thin movements. Suits and shirts back then were very sleek with snug cuffs. Some big honker watchwouldn't fit anywhere or be welcome for dress business suits. In the 1970s and 80s when I wore suit and tie every day, I had shirts with two-button eyelets. Snug and roomy. Depending on what vintage watch I wore, my shirts would work fine! I confess that this lovely Longines is a bit too plain to my tastes. But I love watching your process and work! Stephen

Great video on a very simple but beautiful watch. Thank you so much, Stian. Considering what length watch manufacturers will go nowadays to cut costs, it is well worth noting how more modest watchmakers like Longines have done over time. What a beauty! I love simple watches like this - complications are nice, but they often offset the balance, the symmetry of the dial. This watch is so elegant and classy - simple but not plain. Perfect dress watch as far as I'm concerned. Also the ideal size for chicken wrists like mine. :) You did a great job, fantastic results, especially with the original mainspring! My country is in flames for almost a month now cause it is really easy to burn the forest with 45+ C and plenty of wind to satisfy "Green" energy business plans! Also use Japanese air condition units in order to have direct response and good cooling efficiency, we know better here at the South. Cheers from burning Greece, Jim.

Stian, in America the career path for sadists has to be working in the driver's license bureau or in social security. Did Longines and other watch manufacturers have sealed barrels so they'd have to be replaced instead of taken apart and serviced? That way barrel makers always had a job at Longines. Lol Although it does not have a date function, it is a beautiful watch. Skal from this old retired coot living the dream in Tennessee.

I am considering trying out some amateur watch repair and I have a burning question that I wish to ask you. I have been an automobile mechanic for over 65 years. (I'm 80 now ) My greatest specialty has always been carburetors. My head is chock full of carburetor lore. That lore and $5 might buy you a cup of coffee in some of the cheaper coffee houses. That said, I still have my old 5 Gallon carb cleaning bucket full of the kind of solvent you cannot buy any more. My question: Is there any reason why I couldn't use that carb cleaner to clean those "delicate" watch parts in my carb cleaner? That stuff is pretty powerful against old sweat and body oils. Asking for a friend. :-)
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices Жыл бұрын
It's never too late to start working on watches! That carb cleaner will probably work just fine for most parts, what you want to be cautious with is the parts with shellac (pallet fork/balance and sometimes other places depending on the specific movement) or plastic. If you start out with some cheap watches you can find spare parts for if they get damaged, you can try your solvent and see how it goes.

I do like these Longines dress watches. I think they look smart and simple. I am not a great fan of the sports look chunky watches that appear to be most fashionable now.. As for summer heat the UK has not been as hot this year. Last year it hit record temperatures where I live and we have a 120 year old house with no air con. It got unbearable but I do have a Mustang car with the coldest air con I know. Every afternoon I would grab a beer and sit in the car with the air con on whilst it idled in my driveway. The problem with toggle buttons. I like an ON button and a separate OFF button. Especially these days when the button is de-bounced in poorly written software. And the processor is undersized so every button press is delayed because they went cheap on the processor. AND finally they should always put a remote control input as the highest priority. I have a TV where I hit the CH up button and it goes to the next channel but I already know I don't want to stop at that channel because the signal is frequently weak so I immediately hit CH up again. But the TV is preoccupied with trying to tune in that weak channel and is ignoring any further input from the remote. And sometimes it gets so busy trying to sync that weak channel that it goes minutes totally ignoring any input. And I finally give up and go across the room and un-plug and plug the set forcing a complete reboot.

Why is oiling the balance staff jewels different than the others? If the same you would drop the jewel with hole in the bridge, oil as the others, drop in the cap jewel set springs? Done.

The difference is that you want the oil to lubricate the pivot end also and not just the cylindrical part. Thus you need to ensure that the oil stays on the cap stone
